Unexpectedly complex potpourri

Rose isn’t a note that typically interests me very much. I’ve tried quite a few rose perfumes and most haven’t resonated with me. Rose Magnetic, on paper, seems simple so I wasn’t expecting anything exceptional. However, when I sprayed it on skin, what emerged was surprisingly complex, with an unexpected depth and body you would never guess from the notes.

The rose is dominant, and it’s an astringent, dusty and slightly animalic rose with a champagne-like fizziness. To me, it is a perfect photorealistic mimicry of dried red rose petals, such as one might find in potpourri. Contributing to the potpourri impression is a swirling mist of emergent notes that aren’t listed: spices, lemongrass, lavender, and something that resembles sandalwood maybe. The woodiness is probably from the cedar, but I don’t detect lychee or vanilla at all.

My gothic imagination associates this scent with a kind of decadent melancholy: the abandoned home of deceased grandparents who left bowls of potpourri on tables; roses left to die in their vases. A still life, a portrait of beautiful dead things.

This has become one of my favorite fragrances. It’s so easy to wear, yet has a rare, unique beauty.

Discovery Set Journey 2/11: In the name of the rose

Foreword: I bought the Discovery set from Essential Parfums and I would like to document my journey here. The brand was already known to me for its good fragrances with well-known perfumers and an attractive price/performance ratio, so I wanted to see for myself.

I had certain expectations for this second fragrance. I didn't look at the notes beforehand, but I was also hoping for a magnetic part under “Rose Magnetic”. Something cool, iron-like. Something that makes the fragrance more than just a rose scent.

Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed in this case. I got the full broadside of rose. Not a dark rose, but a very light, pink rose, which becomes very soft and mild with musk, lychee and vanilla. I was reminded of a small block of rose soap, which you all too often find at your grandparents' house. A pleasant fragrance in itself, but where is the magnetism, where is the special something? Rose is and remains the basic concept here.

The longevity and sillage were also moderate. The price is of course top. Unfortunately, this fragrance will soon be forgotten and I look forward to testing the next one.

My Favorite Rose (?)

To be perfectly clear I haven't smelled many rose scents but I recognize a GOOD rose scent when I smell one. Might be one of the most photorealistic roses too.

Starts off very perfumey and alcoholic but once that's away it smells like a true rose, with all its imperfect petals, red and dewy in the sunlight. Acidic but sweet. Incredible work if you ask me.

Clean Rosy Scent

Rose Magnetic presents a lovely, pure rosy aroma with a moderate projection and good longevity. It is a clean, slightly soapy, and rosy scent that is exceptionally pleasing and perfect for everyday wear. It starts with a refreshing blend of citrus and rose, complemented by a touch of sweetness. While it's not overly sweet, it balances a fresh and fruity undertone, creating an inherently feminine fragrance.

Despite its delightful character, the fragrance unfortunately doesn't last as long as I'd prefer. You can feel Its presence for approximately 2 hours, after which it gracefully transitions into a skin scent that remains for the subsequent 4-5 hours.

I was pretty unimpressed with this at first. I still wouldn’t call myself impressed, but I’m not as disappointed as I was when I first tried it. On my skin, it’s practically nonexistent, but that’s more of a me problem than a problem with the perfume itself. When I sprayed it on my clothes though, it smells like how the girls in my high school gym class would smell after swimming. Kind of like shampoo?? Like not shampoo right out the bottle but shampoo directly after a shower. Maybe a little laundry soap too. I don’t know if it’s because of the combination of scents, but it smells like a sweet artificial rose. After a few hours it smells vaguely of those rose hard candies you can find at Asian markets.

It’s alright I guess. Smells a lot like a Bath and Body scent that you could get for... well, not $75.
