Better than Most Others - Still with Much Potential for Improvement
Oud and sandalwood is one of my absolute favorite combinations. A beautiful oud can give sandalwood just the right, dry edge, darkening it without robbing it of that typically creamy melt. This is my perfect feel-good scent and simply wonderful for me - but unfortunately, I've only experienced this in the hardly available and outrageously overpriced "XJ Oud - Java Blossom" as well as in a not officially available fragrance oil that captures this dreamlike quality. Megrez, however, reminds me quite a bit of "Gold Collection - Bayswater." It is indeed a quite beautiful and noble sandalwood-oud, but the typical character of this combination is, in my opinion, already too distorted. This is partly due to the obligatory rose. Of course, in Megrez, the oud had to be accompanied by a rose, which creates a rather familiar oud vibe, even though I do believe I can detect a true-to-nature oud quality here. On the other hand, there are also slightly sharp spicy notes that make the oud simply too bright and, together with the rose, almost medicinal again.
The sandalwood undoubtedly fits wonderfully here as well, as it provides a soft yet bright grounding. Thus, it becomes a spicy rose-oud with a light-creamy-woody undertone. That is nice, but for my taste, it's way too much fluff and at the same time somewhat uninspired, especially when only sandalwood and oud are listed in the fragrance notes - two partners that really don't need much embellishment anymore.
Megrez is a wonderful scent that could easily cost 300 instead of just under 100€, yet I am still somewhat disappointed in its execution.
