Cold Iris and Vanilla-Carnation

There was often something edgy about the work of Jean-Paul Guerlain. For me, he was at his best when he gave vent to his anger: the onslaught of insole in Flora Nerolia, or this - an enclosed woody vanilla-carnation, slightly sick, plastic, sweet and sour with a tacky fruit in the back; insouciant cold iris - like a bloodless sunrise in a graveyard.

There was a crass side to his personality too: making racist comments on live TV; ripping off the name of a world famous rock band...

Metallica: a sickly vanilla ice cream and woody sherry trifle; smell it if you can, try before you buy.

Metallica is a queen

If i only get the chance to hold on to one bottle (of my outrageous 200+ collection) then it would be my today's SOTD.
It is such a versatile perfume and can be worn 24/7 and 365 days of the year.
This is not a perfume it is a warm cozy bed, a friend that comforts you when you feel alone. It makes me feel stronger when i have an important meeting or am fighting against evil thoughts or even evil persons. I get a big smile from ear to ear when i only lift up the top of the bottle and take a sniff of that miracle juice. Feeling a queen when i wear this or does it wear me instead? A fairy tale comes to live, dreams can come true, i believe!!!

A classical spicy-floral-vanilla

Long discontinued, I was lucky enough to find a sealed bottle of Metallica for a reasonable price earlier this year. The bee bottle is a work of art, but the juice itself is equally impressive.

Metallica is a spicy-floral-vanilla. The spicy carnation is a prominent note in the earlier phases of scent development. In the heart, ylang-ylang is the primary floral I detect. The classical warm Guerlainde base follows, highlighted by the gorgeous vanilla note that Guerlain has mastered.

The fragrance perfumes quite well for an EDT. Personally, I plan on wearing the fragrance all-year-round (except daytime in the summer) and I would classify it as a unisex fragrance. Metallica is a true masterpiece from Jean-Paul Guerlain and is one of the best vanilla fragrances I have come across.

Everything else is not important...

Actually, today was my day off.
I really just wanted to do the essentials and then: nothing!

Yesterday, I got a call from my daughter asking if I could take a load to the waste incineration because my car is bigger than hers... actually...
Before that, my boss had asked me to come to a training session today, it would be important... actually...
And actually, a helper was supposed to be there for that damn heavy sofa, but he didn't show up, and we had to heave that miserable thing into the car, it was completely wedged in there with a mattress on top, and oh mommy, is the frame coming too? Everything is possible when there's a will... it went in fine, but we only got it out with the help of the nice man at the waste incineration who looked at us, laughed, and said: how did you even get that in?
Off to the training, I thought it would be better to arrive a bit early.
The place was packed. Overflowing. No time to waste, right into the chaos!
The door opens, and one of my favorite customers walks in, normally her husband follows right behind her. He didn't come. A glance at her black clothing said it all.
Actually, I would have liked to be somewhere else. She looked gaunt, almost hunched as she walked in through the door. Her shoulders were slumped, you could see her sorrow.
Her gaze hit me right in the heart. I walked towards her, took her by the arm, and we zigzagged to the only free chair. She let herself fall, head down, and there she rested for a moment. I asked what I could do for her today.
Nothing. I could do absolutely nothing. She was just in the area, wanted to say hello.
I understood.
She was out to not be alone. Out to not be in the apartment.
We chatted. Actually, I was off, I really shouldn't be here, but then I could have a little chat.
Metallica surrounded me. This almost otherworldly vanilla that I kept inhaling, its scent caught me, preventing me from crying when I saw her tears. It was Metallica that formed a shield around me, whose expression and passion uplifted me.
Metallica is power, a sense for emotions, Metallica is not a cuddly companion.
No, at first it is rough and rugged, I know that bergamot at the beginning very well by now.
Until the flowers come to light, and then it becomes more beautiful, clearer, deeper, more familiar, and soul-colored with every passing minute.
She just stayed seated, I with her, she told a little now and then.
And when she finally stood up, she straightened herself and said:
the time we have with our loved ones is so precious. Nothing else matters in life.

Yes. Everything else is not important.
Thank you, Guerlain, for allowing me to wear this fragrance. If you ever come up with the idea to bring it back, I would be very inclined to let it settle here.
But not for this ridiculous, completely inflated price. Metallica is not a special scent in the heavenly realm, one must be fair and say that there are many similarly wonderful fragrances.
It will find lovers, and some will get furrowed brows at the price.
Or a quickened pulse.

I wear it very, very gladly; it makes moments somehow special.

Actually, I wanted to write something completely different about Metallica. But today it fits quite well, even if my comment is not a shining example of a fragrance description....

Dark, Cool Guerlain Vanilla

Metallica drove me crazy in the year 2000.
It was available at my regular perfumery Kobberger in Frankfurt, three pieces in total, each 250mL EdT for around 500 DM.
I saved my money for so long until I had enough, and on the day I went to the perfumery - it was gone, sold out.

Only then did I realize that it was a one-shot.
Difficult to find back then, today it is only available at horrendous prices.

The bottle is beautiful, with silver bee plates, the golden yellow nectar made the appearance elegant and complete.
Every time I was there, I used the tester until one day it was empty too.

Now, 12 years later, at least 10mL of it have moved in with me, and yes, it has the same mystique, the same allure as back then.

Metallica starts off floral and cool on my skin, somehow aloof.
It vaguely reminds me of Fleur des Comores by Maître Parfumeur et Gantier, which is cheerier and brighter, but also has this blend of flowers, ylang-ylang, and a bit of tonka bean.

Somehow the top and heart notes are quite identical and a bit classic as well, not like the modern, new middle-class fragrances, such as Tonka Imperiale or Angelique Noire.

I really like that, because I also enjoy the classics.
I can clearly smell bergamot, clove, and ylang-ylang, but not the rose at all.

It only brushes against this classic scent but gradually transforms into a deep, unsweetened Guerlain vanilla, which I find a bit in Spiriteuse Double Vanille.

It is a bit sweeter than SDV, but not vanilla pudding or anything like that.
I can still smell a bit of clove and ylang-ylang in the base.

For me, Metallica is a wonderful fragrance, and I could kick myself for not having bought it quickly enough back then.

It’s incomprehensible that even with its relaunch in the Maison Guerlain line as Metalys, it had no success.
