Orange Delight!

Years ago I used to wear Clinique Happy for Men. At that point, it was different from any other cologne I had been wearing due to the "happy" orange note which gave the scent a fizzy lift and really did its job by making me feel happy. As I got older and matured, my taste in cologne changed and I no longer wanted to wear Clinique Happy. When I smelled it, I felt like I had outgrown it. It smelled too generic, too typical and not special enough. I still wanted a good orange fragrance, but one that was elevated, more mature and unexpected.
I had tried Bond No. 9 Little Italy and even though I liked it, I felt like it was too synthetic to be "the" orange scent I was looking for.
With Aqua Allegoria Mandarine Basilic, I had prepared myself not to like it. I have tried so many scents marketed solely toward women and in the end, I gave them all away because they were too "perfumey" on me. I thought that that's where this one would be headed as well. I am pleasantly surprised at how wrong my preconceived notion was. This is the orange scent that I have been longing for, for so long. The orange is authentic, mature and airy. The basil grounds the orange, giving it depth and keeping it from becoming too cloying and sweet. This scent should be considered unisex as I see any man who enjoys the uplifting scent of orange, being able to pull it off well. Not masculine and not feminine, but rather somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. The perfect orange scent for my collection!

A reliable classic for mandarin lovers

I never gave much thought to Mandarine Basilic, even though I once bought a bottle for my mom because I knew she liked it. I'm just not big on citrus freshies. Then I tried the Forte version, which I love, and got curious to revisit the original. Luckily I had a sample at home.

Well, this is not for me, but it's good! Smells just as it should. The mandarin is zesty and juicy, very sparkling and fruity with a hint of sweetness and a touch of bitter orange peel to balance it out. In the opening you can smell the basil, but it's not drifting to far into herbal territory and is gone rather quickly.
After the scent has dried down, green tea becomes the strongest partner for the mandarin. It's not a very realistic tea note, rather a shower-fresh interpretation of it, but it's clearly noticeable.

I appreciate that this doesn't turn out too aromatic or too similar to those classic neroli/citrus colognes. It's just fresh mandarin, or even clementine, they're hard to distinguish from each other. If that's your jam, you can't really go wrong with this one.

Performance is not too great, obviously, but that's expected from a citrus scent without heavy base notes. Just get a big bottle and spray away in summer!

Juicy, refreshing, and perfect for hot summer days

Mandarine Basilic is one of my go-to scents for extremely hot days. It captures all the facets of how a mandarin smells. It's a little sweet like the juice and a little bitter like the skin. It smells as if you peeled a mandarin and got some of the juice and skin all over your fingers and under your nails. There is a hint of basil, which adds to the refreshing feeling. For a citrus scent, I find that this one has decent longevity and sillage though it's in no way strong. This fragrance is easy to reach for in hot summer weather and I think it's a scent that suits everyone.

welcome to summer!

This fragrance is really powerful: a citrusy-aromatic explosion of freshness. I usually spray it in the hottest days because its effect is very energizing .A real aromacologic scent! The price is high, but to me it's one of the Guerlain's masterpieces, including the classic bottle very refined

Photorealistic citrus fruits and spicy basil

I've been eyeing Guerlain's Aqua Allegoria line for a moment, not just for the amazing and beautiful bottles, but also because Guerlain as a perfume house is such a timeless classic and has a great perfume history. I got a sampler from a purchase long ago which I had forgotten about until I remembered I had it and felt like sniffing a citrus / green scent.

It's quite beautiful. The citrus and green accord mix well together, pulling strong on my skin at first. I felt like I was smelling a peeled citrus fruit mixed in with spices from a spice cabinet. It was an experience in itself. There's also the neroli giving a slightly powdery, floral aspect to it all. The citrus and green part stay pretty linear throughout and fade nicely away, leaving a clean, almost soapy scent as the perfume dies down. There's a hint of basil and citrus fruits when the amber and sandalwood take up the space.

It's truly a nice perfume, but the thing that's stopping me from buying a full bottle is that it doesn't last long on my skin. I'm hoping the Aqua Allegoria Forte Mandarine Basilic is stronger and may better suit my skin chemistry. Nonetheless, it's quite a lovely citrus and green scent perfect for warmer weather!
