Mystical green forest
It was the name that urged me to buy a sample of Forest Rain. It sounded so lush and green that I couldn't possibly resist the temptation. Forest Rain turned out to be all that I expected and more.

The moment I applied Forest Rain to my wrist, I exclaimed with deep satisfication, "yum!" To my nose it's a combination of musky greeness, a dew-like sweetness and an elaborate bouquet of big, white lillies.

I feel very feminine and pretty while wearing this, however it has an interesting warmth once settled, that makes me feel very in touch with the earth, somewhat like a hippy. It exudes this strange bohemian aura, and while I'm not very bohemian myself, it awakens the creativeness in me.

The scent tends to envelope you, it becomes you. I can't imagine this fragrance offending anyone. From a distance Forest Rain smells clean and soapy. This fragrance actually reminds me of Spring.

The sillage and lasting strength are amazing. I was so enraptured by this fragrance that I added it to my wishlist in a matter of seconds, without even waiting for the development.

Although I recommend this fragrance for Spring and Summer, I'm currently wearing Forest Rain on a cold and rainy Winter's day and it wears considerably well in such weather.

One That Is Missing
When a perfume is discontinued, meaning: taken off the market, someone is always sad. However, the tears usually dry up faster the more crowded and diverse the segment is from which the discontinued fragrance comes. For example, one might deeply regret the absence of Le Couvent des Minimes' Eau des Missions, but there are numerous other cozy vanilla scents - not completely identical, but similar - so that its lovers at least do not have to be entirely without it. With Forest Rain - one that never stood in the front row - especially because Kiehl's is perceived more as a cosmetics manufacturer than a perfume house - the gap left by its departure has never been filled.

Forest Rain, forest rain, sounds like a harmless, green-fresh shower gel candidate, one for the boys on their way home from the gym. It is green-fresh, but beyond that, an unexpectedly unusual and memorable scent - and one that seems not to exist anymore since then. The niche of forest scents is dominated by resinous or woody fragrances - and moist freshness is found almost exclusively in aquatics (which not everyone likes). The theme of the rain-soaked forest is missing. And here are fresh citrus and tropical-floral notes - one that could also have been called Tiare instead of lily of the valley - along with dark, wet earth, mulch, and dense underbrush - and the cry of the parrot in the endless green.

Conclusion: a lost, little gem. It is missed.

Ah, Venus is lost,...
... click-radoms - by Medici.

Hmmm... prompted by Apicius' interesting comment, I inquired about "Forest Rain" during my visit to the Kiehl's boutique in Frankfurt's Karstadt. The reason for my trip there was actually Luce's comment on Kiehl's Musk No. 1. (See my comment there today.)

Apparently, not only was the perfume fussy - yes, IT WAS - but Kiehl's seems to be as well, as it has been removed from the range. Nothing left in stock.

A visit to Kiehl's website confirmed this statement.
What can one say about that... after just 3 years...

Difficult, fussy, well-made!
Kiehl’s Forest Rain - this name catches the attention, as it immediately brings back memories of the unfortunately discontinued original scent “Sumatra Rain” by Mülhens! On the other hand, the beautiful dark green bottle also hints at the legendary, yet still available forest classics from the fifties: Acqua di Selva and Pino Silvestre.

But nothing of the sort - Kiehl’s takes a completely different approach. In this forest, masses of lily of the valley grow on a spicy-earthy vetiver base, and waves of creamy musk scents permeate everything.

Musk scents are tricky. A whole range of fragrance materials can be hidden behind them, and they are not always used skillfully. Some musk notes are unpleasantly soapy, others creamy, some powdery, or even animalistic. Sometimes they are all of these at once. In Forest Rain, a mixture of creamy-soapy predominates, which, combined with the pronounced lily of the valley aroma, fully reminds one of cosmetic or cleaning products. Am I in the forest? No, rather one finds oneself in the penetrating stench of a Lush store.

One must have a certain fondness for the “soapy” fragrance direction to immediately become friends with Forest Rain. If you don’t, it takes a bit longer.

There’s a trick with Forest Rain - one should refrain from sniffing at the sprayed area. That is truly a challenge. However, Forest Rain has some projection, and at a few centimeters away from the skin, the scent is noticeably different. Now the musk takes on a slight animalistic touch, and the soapiness is not as bothersome. Dark vetiver and the cool lily of the valley scent complement each other perfectly. Forest Rain is certainly not a wonder of complexity - I would describe the composition as simple, but definitely good.

A green-floral musk scent that is also - perhaps especially - wearable for men: this is not very common. Nevertheless, this composition does not feel entirely unfamiliar to me. Lily of the valley and vetiver - we know that, and from the very successful Vetiver Dance by Andy Tauer. Sure - the Tauer scent is significantly more complex. The citrus notes in the top are pronounced there, whereas in Forest Rain they are hardly noticeable, and otherwise, the Tauer scent simply has more to offer. However, with all Tauer perfumes, I am bothered by a bitter, resinous note - the hallmark of this brand. Therefore, Vetiver Dance has never made it into my collection, despite its innovative lily of the valley-vetiver.

Despite all its simplicity - Forest Rain is something special. I highly recommend testing it yourself. Forest Rain would be a good everyday scent. However, one must come to terms with the projection. You must not greedily sniff at it, as that ruins the beauty. A bit of discipline, please! You need to maintain some distance, you have to wait until a hint of Forest Rain makes itself known on its own. Forest Rain envelops the wearer at will; you cannot force this scent - quite fussy!

Many thanks to the donor of the sample; during occasional testing in the store (KaDeWe), I was unable to find access to Forest Rain!

A clearing full of lily of the valley, surrounded by dense green mixed forest. Unfortunately painted by Thomas Kinkade, "painter of light."
