the little fruit basket with the big pink bow
Recently, when my acquaintance stopped by for a chat and a cup of tea with her latest fragrance from ID Parfums, I was actually feeling a bit grumpy: I really wasn’t in the mood for a visit.
As so often happens, however, the good hour we spent together with "Gandali" turned out to be very pleasant and wonderfully "girl-pink" nostalgic.

With this fragrance launch, we both thought of an earlier colleague and her fondness for fruity shower gels: the more, the better!
Her children were already out of the worst of it, and her life had stabilized in many ways after she had left her husband in a true "night-and-fog operation."
When we met, everything in her life was already in "calm waters."
And so she could also do something for herself; she was still young and so full of joy!
How she could find joy in little things - it was a pleasure to listen to her!
She discovered a summer special at Yves Rocher: shower gel after shower gel - each in a different fruit note. The choice became difficult - all the offered fragrance directions were ordered by me for her (typical girl!).
A good week later, I showed up at the office with an extra bag full of "fruit scents": strawberry, cherry, pineapple, banana, and of course vanilla were among them.
She was ahead of her time and sometimes used several shower scents at once: sometimes it was a bit overwhelming, as we could only open the skylight on those hot summer days in the office.

So when I smelled "Gandali," this colleague immediately came to mind: it was, first and foremost, a journey down the road of nostalgia!
Not quite as sweet fruits generously release their aroma; this basket contains a variety of ripe, red strawberries, split pomegranates, and some halves of passion fruit - the fruit knife is still there.
The white flat basket is not without reason adorned with a pink ribbon and a large pink bow.
It is a fruit symphony in rose.
To this, the small-flowered climbing jasmine joins, no less fragrant than its large-flowered relative; it can certainly be quite overwhelming for sensitive noses as well.
Here it also meets a large cushion of blooming lily of the valley - that could go wrong!
Surprisingly, however, in combination with the summery ripe fruits, a pleasant scent progression emerges; in this summery canon, a very beautiful rose of fragrance joins in.
The solid craftsmanship is once again evident here.
The previous fragrance notes could have created a grand chaos and possibly even instilled fear - but they do not!
They remain girl-pink and fruity-floral.
A lightly spiced sandalwood-scented vanilla foam cap crowns this pink-white fragrance painting in delightfully youthful fashion.
Why do I think of the well-known Vichy check in these two delicate colors at this point?
A summer dress made of cotton with white lace trim on the wide skirt comes to mind.
If my former colleague were still the same age today - she would surely be thrilled!

For me, this cheerful fragrance being is clearly too young; as a "flower being" with fish blood, I find here too much fruit, too much candy pink.
But "Gandali" possesses southern, summery charm and will surely make friends with some fragrance noses among us.
Sillage and longevity are not extraordinary; but again, in line with the reputation of the house ID Parfums/Isabel Derroisné.
The packaging in shades of gray-blue, pink, and lilac - a bit of paisley pattern, a few stylized flowers - actually fits this fragrance image very well.

In any case, a short visit and this fragrant "babydoll" have brightened up a gray evening entertainingly.
(Who still remembers those cute two-piece pajamas with short shorts and a swinging top, also called "Springer" in Germany? They were just too adorable and brought a "seductive touch" to many of the films of that time.)

A Touch of Pink
At first, I simply misread the name. What’s the name of the perfume? Gandalf? Do I want to smell like a rather scruffy older chain smoker? Nothing against Gandalf the Grey, and certainly nothing against the great Ian McKellen, but as a namesake for a women’s fragrance, he doesn’t seem quite fitting to me … Oh, the scent is called Gandali! Is the association intentional? In any case, my curiosity was piqued, and since it was available for just a few euros on eBay and I enjoy experimenting with completely unfamiliar scents to wean my nose off Uncle Yves, I ended up bidding on it.

The bottle looks completely different from the picture - a simple, rounded flacon, quite boring in comparison, but at least it doesn’t look like an electric toothbrush. I hesitated for a few days before trying it out, then it was time for a test - as always, when my husband is already in bed, because I don’t want to mess things up with him. There was a timid spray on my wrist - my nose is quite sensitive, and my skin even more so. But maybe it could have been a bit more, because I have to practically press my nose against my wrist to catch a whiff of this scent.

It does indeed smell fruity from the start, but for me, there’s a distinct hint of chewing gum - the good old Hubba Bubba strawberry, which is why I’m quite glad for the weak sillage. For my husband, this would be absolutely nothing, not even on me. For me … I’m not sure. The scent seems rather one-dimensional, flat. It doesn’t tell me a story. And it lacks freshness - the strawberries come from the chewing gum, the cherries from a jar, the raspberries from the deep end of a punch bowl, and even though it comes across as pleasant, it remains quite arbitrary.

And it doesn’t develop further either. Once the top note, which brings an unpleasant sharp hint of vinegar, has faded, you’re left with the same meaningless mushy scent mixture of wildly blended pink fruits for the rest of its duration. I love rose scents, but if a rose ever landed in this mélange, it’s struggling for survival without ever surfacing, and the same goes for the poor vanilla.

Anyone who had Blendi toothpaste as a child will recognize the smell I’m reminded of - but who wants to smell like a children’s toothpaste? Better to smell like Gandalf the Grey - even if he doesn’t look like he comes into contact with a shower too often, he has dignity, charisma, character; all that which the supposed namesake lacks. And we know that grey is a color with many shades, not just since the eponymous bestseller. Gandali, on the other hand, knows exactly one shade of pink: a sad, pale rose.

Perhaps little girls who want to play at being fine ladies will enjoy the scent, and with the weak sillage, Gandali doesn’t mind being sprayed as generously as if a fourteen-year-old boy set off the youth hostel fire alarm with his deodorant. As a woman in my late thirties, I feel at least thirty years too old for this scent. Maybe I’m being unfair, maybe it’s my skin chemistry to blame, and I don’t want to suggest that Gandali doesn’t smell absolutely wonderful on others. But what I’m getting in my nose and I simply don’t match.

Strawberry fields forever...
Gandali sounds a bit like India, Maharani and the like to me, but the scent is anything but that.

From the very first try, I knew that I recognized the scent. Gandali reminded me a lot of an Yves Rocher fragrance, less sweet and a bit more aquatic - Ming Shu.

Like Ming Shu, Gandali is also very fine and light, yes, aquatic. The top note comes across as very fruity and very natural, with not the strawberries dominating, but rather the other fruits complementing beautifully. It’s more about the strawberry leaves than the strawberries themselves that give off the scent. From the start, Gandali is noticeably sweeter than Ming Shu.

The heart note is also a bit sweeter than Ming Shu, but quite pleasant. Here, the two are true scent twins. Delicate flowers - I associate the term "water lily" in both cases, enveloping in a subtle, fine floral scent cloud. I can't pinpoint individual flowers here, as the scent is woven too finely.

The base is not only identical in components for both fragrances, but Ming Shu is slightly woodier and Gandali a bit sweeter. While I would recommend Ming Shu for both genders, I perceive Gandali as a purely feminine scent, as it has this fine, very feminine sweetness that suits a man less well.

Conclusion: I'm glad I have both fragrances; Ming Shu is more of a pure summer scent for me, when it’s really warm. Gandali is wearable all year round, even now, in the cooler autumn. A beautiful, really pleasant and delicately fragrant mood lifter.

The bottle is really beautifully designed, and the packaging can almost be described as artistic. However, due to the shape of the bottle, it is quite large, and I was quite surprised that such a delicate bottle is in such a large package. It is very well protected inside.

Anyone who knows and likes Ming Shu will also like this scent here. Those who are not familiar with Ming Shu have a very pleasant candidate in Gandali when something gentler is desired. Gandali is very noticeable in the vicinity of the wearer and lasts about 4 - 5 hours. But that’s okay given the purchase price.
