Strangely, not a Rose Oud at all!
Allow me to begin this review by saying a huge thanks to Guusje for sending me samples of nearly the entire 'cube bottle' collection by Iluminum ... what a spectacular treat :). In preface, I also need to mention that Rose Oud has very little to do with either Rose OR Oud ... but it's fabulous anyway :).

This fragrance reminds me of something I smelled and adored a LONG time ago, I just can't put my finger on what it is! The opening here features a huge blast of Muguet, softened slightly by a touch of Jasmine and a wispy Rose far in the background. Touches of spice (pepper ? clove?) bring a lovely 'warmness', but nothing overwhelming. If there is Oud in this one, it's definitely not of the pungent barnyard variety, and yet there is a certain pungency evident in Rose Oud.
The note pyramid lists Castoreum ( 'beaver butt' to coin a Katy Puckrick phrase), but I have very little experience with this note so I cannot truthfully judge it. This Illuminum offering does carry a gorgeously soft suede note which is reportedly what Castoreum provides ... like handmade gloves scented with Lily of the Valley. If the intention here was toward an animalistic feel it hasn't succeeded in any major way.
If you have had any experience with the classic Arabic combination of Rose and Oud (trust me when I say I have!) and are after that here, this fragrance will surely disappoint. I get a much more Muguet/soft Spice vibe from this with an undeniable green floral aspect.

With some time on my hands I have been doing quite a bit of sampling of late. Illuminum's Rose Oud has to be one of the best surprises I've had this entire year! Undoubtedly full bottle worthy and already placed on the wish-list.

The Freshest Oud Floral in This Galaxy!
This starts of with a smooth fresh linen Lily-of-the-valley that has my nose infatuated from the get-go. Then the soft rounded rose petals drift by like a veil and leave a subtle trail of fresh herbaceous basil and salivation inducing coriander. Where is my Tagine Cooker, right now I wonder? I hear the tinkled and beads against silk, wind against mountains and late afternoon birds leaving there final comments on the day. Like olives and stuffed grape leaves with feta cheese and fresh mint tea- this full-bodied voluptuous queen actually belongs right in the middle of a sultry summer evening. Here the rose is not big, deep red and ready to hunt you down, but rather powdery pink, joyous and playful. Finally the pinch of that rotted, beautiful agar wood smell, which is soaped down and cleaned up in Michael Boadi.'s masterful composition. This is soothing, soulful and earthy but never dirty or heavy. You are drowning, but you just don't care! Similar at points to APOM pour Femme....but far less sweet and cloying, this is using the same seduction tools but with a more deft hand and some additional wisdom.

Surprisingly, this is also a bit powdery, flutelike...I here the Oboe slowly making a wane entrance- but not sweet and definitely unisex. After 2 hours it has revealed a dab of oily castoreum, but blessedly, no sign of patchouli- on my skin.I flipping love this fragrance! My head can not understand why it is named so carelessly and destined to get thrown in the mix with Killians' "Rose Oud" (a royal & beastly beauty!) and Henry Bendel's, Jo Malone's Etc. versions of Rose Ouds- more aptly named Rose & Oud or Rose Oud. Illuminum's only fault with this magnificent scent was the name. I would have called this "Basil Rose Oud". That pungent, green, spritely herbaceous and springy fresh Basil-green note is totally undeniable! The sillage is respectable, about 1 meter for the first hour and then down to a skin scent range of 1-3cm for 4-6 hours. The longevity is commendable- if you wear this to bed, be for warned...you will wake up smelling it in a much more open, skin-soaked silky gentle form and you will have totally wild dreams! Next full bottle purchase for sure! Have been wearing it for 3 days straight and feel like I am having a secret affair with out all the hassle!

I’ll admit it right from the start: even though I like the scent of roses, I’m not necessarily a big connoisseur and appreciator of rose fragrances.

A major exception is “Black Tie” by Washington Tremlett - here the rose comes across as quite balanced and masculine enough. A truly outstanding creation!

I had hoped for something similar based on the composition of Rose Oud. Oud and castoreum at least suggest a darker scent. But already in the first nanoseconds, Rose Oud takes a completely opposite direction. The Moroccan rose mentioned here comes off as rather shrill and piercing. Additionally, I get the impression that a few citrus notes like orange or even mandarin have rolled in. More likely, however, is that the jasmine and geranium are a bit overly fresh in relation to this type of rose. As a result, the entire fragrance feels light overall, but still quite sweet - almost as if it could be drunk like rose water lemonade.

However, it lacks the oud - in my opinion, even across the board. And I have no idea where it has gone or whether it was omitted from the start. Quite brazen of Illuminum...

Furthermore, I find Rose Oud far too girlish. As a room fragrance, it might just about work in the summer, but as a serious perfume, it’s simply a tad too bright. Fragrances of this type could also come from a bottle inspired by any random manga comic character.

Comparison, unfortunately (not) possible yet!
The fragrance twin of the classic (red cap) D&G for women? I would have liked to clarify this question today! However, D&G was nowhere to be found. Rose Oud reminds me a lot of it.

Rose Oud has no scent development on my skin. Once applied, the intensity only changes minimally. None of the listed fragrance components stands out particularly on my skin. Of course, I compared the fragrance pyramids. Rose, jasmine, and lily of the valley are common to both. The spices could be similar. Since it has been a long time since I had D&G on my skin, I can't remember its scent progression.

What I somehow miss in this fragrance is the oud note, which does not want to reveal itself on my skin. The castoreum gives RO a certain erotic touch that D&G also had.

I can imagine that RO evokes the same either-or reaction as D&G did back then. You either love it or find it dreadful.

One more thing: I find it funny that RO is classified as a unisex fragrance. I can well imagine that a man needs a bit of courage to wear such a scent.

Dare to try it!

Curlyj, thank you for this lovely fragrance.

Erotic Rose
Thank you very much for the sample EP; I gladly and with growing enthusiasm took this test! Because I am naturally curious, and this time my curiosity was greatly rewarded. The scent simply blows me away!

In contrast to Kilian's Rose Oud, this Rose Oud is very feminine and soft, which does not mean that it cannot be worn by men. I just mean that the scent is distinctly feminine.

The opening is fresh and very faint for a few seconds, so I raised my eyebrows in surprise, but the scent strength increases steadily and reaches its full development after about 20 minutes. Then - and I have to agree with Ergoproxy - there is no more change in the scent.

The fragrance is rosy-erotic; I can't describe it any other way. Absolutely THE scent for certain hours... Wonderful, and to compare it once more with Kilian's Rose Oud, which is indeed wearable during the day, this Rose Oud is not intended for everyday use and is not suitable.

It is a skin-close scent, attractive and erotic, and the longevity is good.

I simply can't stop pressing my nose against my wrist to sniff it again and again. Sooner or later - I am absolutely sure - this scent will move in with me!

Jasmine and castoreum give the faint rose lemony-sour note. Oud? Where?

For me, it's primarily a rose scent. Floral-chypre with roses and a few white flowers. I can't detect any oud. A girls' fragrance.

This fragrance is too soapy-rosy for me. I can't perceive the oud at all, and the base notes are unfortunately overshadowed. More of a women's scent.

For me, as always: Enticing combo of rose and oud: Sweet, vanilla-waxy-aquatic = beaver-like woody oud, harmonious roses.

Strong chypre-like sharp scent with intense jasmine flowers and coriander spice. Little rose, but a tuberose vibe. Elegantly aloof.

Very interesting scent. The blend of jasmine, rose, patchouli, and spices makes it special. I don't notice the oud - that's good!
