Strangely, not a Rose Oud at all!
Allow me to begin this review by saying a huge thanks to Guusje for sending me samples of nearly the entire 'cube bottle' collection by Iluminum ... what a spectacular treat :). In preface, I also need to mention that Rose Oud has very little to do with either Rose OR Oud ... but it's fabulous anyway :).
This fragrance reminds me of something I smelled and adored a LONG time ago, I just can't put my finger on what it is! The opening here features a huge blast of Muguet, softened slightly by a touch of Jasmine and a wispy Rose far in the background. Touches of spice (pepper ? clove?) bring a lovely 'warmness', but nothing overwhelming. If there is Oud in this one, it's definitely not of the pungent barnyard variety, and yet there is a certain pungency evident in Rose Oud.
The note pyramid lists Castoreum ( 'beaver butt' to coin a Katy Puckrick phrase), but I have very little experience with this note so I cannot truthfully judge it. This Illuminum offering does carry a gorgeously soft suede note which is reportedly what Castoreum provides ... like handmade gloves scented with Lily of the Valley. If the intention here was toward an animalistic feel it hasn't succeeded in any major way.
If you have had any experience with the classic Arabic combination of Rose and Oud (trust me when I say I have!) and are after that here, this fragrance will surely disappoint. I get a much more Muguet/soft Spice vibe from this with an undeniable green floral aspect.
With some time on my hands I have been doing quite a bit of sampling of late. Illuminum's Rose Oud has to be one of the best surprises I've had this entire year! Undoubtedly full bottle worthy and already placed on the wish-list.
