Another Winner From Jul Et Mad?...
Terrasse a St Germain opens with a soft tangerine and sanitized grapefruit citrus tandem with a hint of underlying rose in support before quickly transitioning to its heart. As the composition enters its early heart the citrus fades into the background though doesn't completely vacate, as the perfume's rose floral takes the fore, adding a gentle powdery dimension, bolstered by a smooth underlying iris-like accord and soft slightly animalic musk and creamy sandalwood rising from the base. During the late dry-down the florals gradually vacate, leaving the remnants of the slightly animalic musk and slightly sweet, creamy sandalwood as the focus through the finish. Projection is average, but longevity very good at 10-12 hours on skin.

Jul et Mad is a house that frequently stays under most folks' radar, but it in fact has released a number of worthy perfumes in its moderately sized stable, and Terrasse a St Germain can now add itself to its growing list of winners. In truth, the perfume took a bit of time to warm to. The powdery, creamy florals combined with the sandalwood first reminded me of the disappointing "makeup-like" accord found in perfumes like Dior Homme. Make no mistake, Terrasse a St Germain is nowhere near that perfume, and as time passes it gradually separates and distinguishes itself from other perfumes of that ilk. As a matter of fact, it took sniffing its remnants on my jacket sleeves the following day for me to truly appreciate just has refined and luxurious smelling the perfume really is. The florals and soft woods just seem to meld together, and when the iris-like accord fades to the background, the perfume really shines and smells great. The bottom line is the approximately $105 per 50ml bottle at discounters Terrasse a St Germain appears to be a "more of the same" iris floral driven concoction, but this is a much more complex and sophisticated perfume, earning a "very good" to "excellent" 3.5 to 4 stars out of 5 rating and a solid recommendation, especially to those seeking a more stereotypical "feminine" perfume.

Memories from Days Gone By
Even after the first spray on my arm, I began to indulge in memories from days gone by. The beautiful patchouli in this fragrance is definitely to blame, so wonderfully integrated that I could almost cry with joy at the scent.

Most fragrances that I hold dear either make me incredibly happy, cheerful, or just in a good mood. This one is different. Here, all feelings come together at once: happiness, cheerfulness, sadness, pain. I can hardly put into words what this scent does to me, but I wouldn't want to miss it, as it brings back so many different events that I will never forget/want to forget.

The top note, which comes across beautifully fruity, not fresh-sparkling but rather creamy, gives me the feeling of "happiness." The patchouli is present from the very beginning, which for me is the most important component of this fragrance, as it contains everything I associate with my memories. It reminds me of my childhood/teenage years spent with my brother and mother. There was a time when everything seemed perfect. Spending time together and simply enjoying everything as a family. We stuck together like glue, and nothing could tear us apart.

Then comes the heart note, which with its enchanting and delicate flowers makes the scent more adult. Everything becomes a bit more serious, yet it remains soft and creamy. Here, everything changes, my feelings shift, and it becomes sad for me, and the pain is palpable. Illness, accidents, the family falling apart, and the loss is great. I fight, have to be strong, and continue living my life. But I manage it, thanks to my wonderful grandparents/aunt/uncle. Life is completely different now, but I bring forth all the good that has happened to me and take one step at a time forward.

Finally, the base note, yes, this unites everything I have already mentioned, but it also becomes a bit woody. It reminds me a little of incense sticks that my mother used to light on Saturdays, turning up the music loud, preferably Bob Marley, and then dancing with me around the apartment. Times that I will never forget. This scent now often brings those memories back to me, and I can say I'm glad about it, as happiness, cheerfulness, sadness, and pain are all part of life, and one should never forget them!

I hope this all fits here and that my fragrance description can be understood, but this was very important to me!

* A comment dedicated to my deceased mother and brother - I love you!

Happy End
A breeze like Cologne water wafts by on light musk. This impression lasts only seconds - almost immediately, a few timid, bright flowers appear, gently citrusy accompanied by enveloped, acid stripped of its edge. For upfront is the aforementioned creamy musk, stamping its mark on everything else.

Within the first half hour, a subtle sweetness emerges, a hint of sandalwood creaminess? Then a bit of spice, sprung from the floral notes, and I spontaneously think of cumin. I also ponder a liverwurst note, but quickly attribute that to the sandwich I had just bitten into.

The latter would have been quite varied, though. It might have done some good, especially since Terrasse à St-Germain is otherwise not particularly diverse. On the contrary, it reminds me of various musk creams that do indeed thrive in some variety within the higher price segment. Here, on the side, pale flowers are also employed.

The promised patchouli hides for a long time beneath the creamy layer, and only around noon does the fragrance take a turn in that regard. Not in the sense of a complete, possibly even rapid departure from the previous notes; no, it can initially only give the scent a rougher touch, a tiny edge. Finally!

Over the following hours, it gradually gains more weight, so gently that the decline of the creaminess is hardly noticeable at first. And yet, this new power dynamic in the late afternoon gives me the most beautiful part of the fragrance by far: An exquisite, rough-creamy patchouli. Sandalwood and possibly a hint of vanilla contribute gentle sweetness. The flowers have practically vanished into the background. The musk is now so restrained and light that it almost feels airy. A tiny hint of soap, noticeable only directly on the skin, adds an extra lift.

This is very noble and very fine - just a bit too quiet. What a pity.

Conclusion: I struggle with a rating. I choose a "Good" in light of the successful second part, which should certainly be understood as a balance. Terrasse à St-Germain is simply made for other people.

I thank Ernstheiter for - a miniature!

A Beautiful Whiff of Nothing
sometimes it can be dangerous with unknown scents. With Terrasse à St-Germain, I sprayed and smelled practically nothing. A bit of alcohol and maybe a hint of something not exactly identifiable citrus-soft... and then I sprayed away, believing that nothing dangerous could come my way. I have accidentally overdosed like this several times before, underestimating how intensely the scent develops. But here it is just right. Terrasse à St-Germain is a beautiful, soft, uncomplicated citrus-floral-patchouli scent, to sum it up briefly. The grapefruit and tangerine (isn't that the same as mandarin?) smell natural, but not zesty or sour; I immediately notice a very soft, balsamic patchouli, which, probably due to the combination with sandalwood, is not earthy or musty at all, but simply very delicate. This creates a lovely harmony with the citrus fruits, feeling calm yet cheerful. Over time, I increasingly notice floral notes that almost become too dominant for me, nearing the edge of being unpleasant. They are very soft flowers, rather white flowers, not red roses; unfortunately, still somewhat complicated for me, but surely beautiful for many. Over time, a very subtle, slightly honey-like sweetness emerges; not much, not sticky or heavy; really just a hint, like a delicate memory of linden blossom sweetness, and everything develops into a soft-floral skin scent that even evokes slight associations with body lotions and creams for me in the base.

A rather feminine, pleasant scent for a warm summer evening, with restrained intensity/yield but relatively good longevity, so I feel.

Sacrament
A sacrament is a rite that makes a visible sign of an invisible reality of God present and allows participation in it.

"Sacraments must be felt," writes Pastor Rainer Maria Schießler in his book "Heaven, God, Sacrament." Not, as taught in priest training, to carefully dip a thumb in the chrism oil for a baptism and mark a cross on the child's forehead, only to immediately remove it with a cotton ball pinched between the index and middle fingers, but rather to generously anoint the head and body of the new earth citizen with a proper dollop of wonderfully fragrant chrism oil.

Apparently, I was baptized in a methodologically correct way, as I do not remember the scent of the chrism, but I imagine it to be like Terrasse a St. Germain by Jul et Mad. Anointing is thus the main theme of the fragrance, as well as the untouched, innocence, naivety, and holiness of new life. Security - being carried by the floral, creamy nuances of the scent on its patchouli base. Gently surrounded by holiness, like the soft fluttering of angel wings, which surely especially love and frequently visit those baptisms where the pastor does not skimp on the chrism.

I find it a bit difficult to connect the name of the fragrance with its texture. The image of a terrace on the Seine island of St. Germain in Paris emerges, surrounded by an ochre-colored clay wall covered with lush, colorful flowers. The fragrance rather sings of the warm, radiant clay wall in the gentle autumn sun than the flowers dreaming away there. Imperceptibly, sand trickles from the hand-formed clay bricks made a few hundred years ago, reminding us that the invisible reality of God is always and everywhere around us.

First textbook chypre with a hint of aldehyde in the fresh sour fruit phase, then a shift to a floral musk wood scent. Classic + yet modern.

The rhubarb bothers me a bit in the sour opening, but then a bright, subtly bitter floral scent unfolds, ending softly creamy.

Smells sour, but not unpleasant. At first, it could be from Penhaligon's, later a bit duller. Not excited enough for the price.

Can there be a nastier combo than musk & patch? Sure. Just add oxalic acid & hesperidins, shake it up, and you're off to Sniff.

A fine patchouli, very easy to spray on, perfect for me especially in summer, subtle but not trivial, feminine.
