seed cake served with herbal tea

This is Hayloft’s predecessor and you feel a similar DNA between the two, yet they’re so wildly different. Hayloft is richly sweet, honeyed, toasted, with a heavy hand of hay. This is its lighter younger sibling. Hayloft is warm whereas this is like a cool breeze.

This opens with freshly aromatic herbal tea with sweet and dry hay. There’s a touch of honey here but it’s very light handed paired with a fresh lavender. The seed cake note here is prominent, an interestingly earthy and grainy gourmand type of note. Like if you made a sweet cake from the grounds of a farm. The jasmine here is light and airy, offering a floral touch. This is a beautiful pairing of aromatic teas sweetened with honey, and a side of earthy seed cake, wrapped up with a hint of florals and warm oats coming from the hazelnut and oatmeal. A standalone fragrance that feels perfectly conjoined with Hayloft. Hayloft is fall, and this is its lovely spring companion.

Sweet and spicy cider-like blend

Sampling one of the two most recent releases from Pineward Perfumes, Shire, a mostly sweet and spicy concoction with a remarkable note list (pasted from the website) of hay, oatmeal, hazelnut, bergamot, lavender, herbal tea, westfarthing leaf (tobacco), seed cake, jasmine, orris, and honey. I mainly get the honey, hazelnut, bergamot, and tobacco, with a pinch of hay for its spicy semi-animalic quality. It slightly reminds me of a warm cider with nuanced spices, perhaps a dessert type of stew or fruit topping, not overly heavy. It does not immediately remind me of the other sweeter entries from the house and thus adds some diversity, somehow a bit evocative even though I’ve not smelled anything exactly like it before.

Shire is EDT concentration and as such is a bit more modestly priced than most of the house’s extrait-concentrated collection, at $135/80 for 57/37ml, very reasonable in the current market, in my opinion, and I find it to perform quite well, with good density and lasting power, especially.

Only for true fruitcake and oat aficionados

I am kinda disappointed. This does not smell like I would imagine Shire would smell like. This is too sweet and cake-y. Fruitcake on the windowsill in a British village. Oatmeal and honey notes are strong but the other notes are completely overshadowed by fruitcake. It's not giving Bag-End. I know hobbits like a good meal but, come on, this is a fruitcake overload! From the list of the notes, it could have worked, have hay and tobacco notes been noticeable. Alas, all I get is fruitcake.

Pineward did a really good job with Murkwood and Fanghorn, but Shire is a miss for me. Glad to see other people are enjoying it at least.

I feel like Pastoral is more "Shire" than Shire is.

Shire: Review 03

Smells like waking up in the midwestern country on a cold brisk autumn morning, 7:30am, waking up with the sun beaming thru the windows and preparing yourself some lavender honey tea, and a bowl of oatmeal and a side of seed cake for a delicious breakfast. 9.5/10

Pineward, why did this have to be an EDT? I need to enjoy this through the whole day!!
Thankfully my Hayloft dram comes soon.

Beats the Yankee Candle Allegations

I personally think this beats the autumn yankee candle allegations! I think there are other Pineward scents that smell like yankee candle, but not this one. The oats and fruitcake and hay are so interesting combined with the strong lavender. Cozy and sweet and fruity and grainy. I love to wear this one to bed. Probably my favorite from Pineward so far.
