Sunny day
Vacances.. The name alone puts a smile on my face, in anticipation of a sunny vacation as soon as this pandemic thing is over.

So today is the day we let this genie out of the bottle. Nice bottle, by the way, that came in an even nicer box. Anyway..

As if my wishes were immediately granted, today turned out to be the first sunny day after weeks of cold windy rainy weather. No work, no chores, no worries on my mind. A beautiful spring day. Perfect setting for this beautiful perfume.

Vacances doesn’t burst open with citrus. Instead the florals fade in, as if they start blooming in the morning sun. I get a dry pollen-like floral scent, in colors I’d say purple and yellow. Fresh in the sense of fresh flowers. Also stemmy green notes. Spectacular natural elegance! Effortless beauty in a Parisian chic way.

With time the floral notes vary a little in intensity, keeping it an joyous experience. Nothing dramatic. Not too serene either. Just a gentle aura of joy, class and sunshine. This goes on for a good six hours or so. Then, a pleasant styrax note announces the final stage. Sunset.

Today is a perfect day. Thanks to Vacances. And the sun. I wish it would never end.

Vacances en France
How often I spent my holidays in France during my younger years. Either as part of the exchange program with our school choir - the neighboring community had a partner city near Roanne - or later with my parents, uncle, aunt, cousins, and cousin during the summer holidays. We usually headed south, visiting Nice, the wonderful perfume city of Grasse, the artist village of Fayence, and other lovely spots. Today, my husband and I travel across the entire country 1-2 times a year when we vacation in Spain. And even though I barely understand the language - my school French is so rusty - the magic of the country still captivates me every time.

Vacances by Patou takes me back to France once again. I have often smelled a fragrance of this kind whenever I visited France. This wonderfully soft, floral-powdery feel-good scent connects me with the room of my French host family's daughter, where I was allowed to stay, as well as with the southern French holiday apartment where we spent our summer vacations. It also reminds me of various little shops in the country that we visited. And even the spring air of France itself seems to hold this magic from time to time.

Vacances is powdery, yet airy and light. And that’s exactly what I like. It’s a gentle floral powder that envelops you, reminiscent of freshly washed clothes. In a charming, French way. The flowers come together to create a wonderful whole. Galbanum adds a delicate spicy edge, and the musk makes it cuddly. However, the combination smells not only powdery to me but also finely soapy. I also think of shops with fine soaps.

A feel-good aura through and through, transporting me to the early summer in France. Everything here is wonderfully balanced. Almost like a hug. A thoroughly French fragrance that is never too much. Even for powder skeptics, like I am, I heartily recommend testing this fine perfume. For a brief moment while sniffing, I did think of Teint de Neige, but that similarity is so distant that no one needs to fear a powder monster. No, Vacances is truly like a vacation in a spray. It already awakens anticipation for the holidays.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the lovely Petra66 for the testing opportunity.

Lilac, I do like it after all *astonished*
I don't know how this fragrance got its name, but it puts me in a cheerful mood. And the holiday season should be cheerful and happy. So the name is positively charged. And the scent is too.

I'm not a big fan of lilac scents, nor of lilac in nature. And then there's hyacinth in Vacances, which gives me headaches even in very large rooms. But Thomas Fontaine is a great perfumer (One Love, Eau Noble, oh just take a look for yourself) and so Vacances was on my watchlist.

Vacances starts off with lilac, a whole lot of lilac. Galbanum greens and resinous just a bit, slightly reducing the sweetness of the lilac, maybe it's also the styrax. The hyacinth hardly makes an impact, just like mimosa and rose. They serve only as a subtle accompaniment, allowing the lilac to take center stage. And I can't perceive much more, except for the clean musk that exudes a slightly powdery note. The scent is fresh, green, very floral, and has a bittersweet spiciness that I find extremely appealing. Vacances lasts for several hours; I would rate its longevity and sillage as good to medium.

The scent is most beautiful in spring, with the first mild breezes, but in this dreary autumn weather, it significantly lifted my mood during yesterday's test. It also did the same for Mr. Pluto, who got to sniff it. I find this scent suitable for guys too, although the gentlemen should really enjoy floral notes.

Funny, I just got rid of a few fragrances at dear Parfumas, I want to downsize, I have to get up earlier in the morning soon so I can decide what to wear, and I could already strike again... well, I am just addicted. And Parfumo is my dealer...

Thank you dear Angelliese for the introduction :o)

Never Again School
Patou had three titles in the program that pique curiosity just by their names: Que sais-je? (1925), like the publication series of the Presses Universitaires de France, known in this forum through Edmond Roudnitska's contribution 'Parfumerie' (#1888) from 1980, which was later reinterpreted, rewritten, and adopted by Ellena - who else; Colony (1938) - Colony. A perfume with a pineapple note and, among other things, in a pineapple-shaped (!) bottle - if this were still in production, the debates would be guaranteed, and then there’s Vacances, a scent that was released to introduce paid vacation in France in 1936. A book series, colonial daydreams, and social changes.

Among other things, MonsieurTest has taken a close look at the reissue of L'Heure Attendue (2015), which has unfortunately been discontinued, from the Collection Héritage under Thomas Fontaine (including references to Kerléo and Alméras plus a financing plan). Fontaine, who also did excellent work on the Le Galion relaunch, is behind this reissue of Vacances (2015). I am not yet familiar with earlier versions, but one thing is certain: he has created an incredibly good, realistic, and perfumed lilac that occupies the peak of the bell curve between the naturally airy En Passant (2000) and the spicier, more opulent Désarmant (2013). Vacances feels quite modern in this version; the connection to past decades is there, but it seems to me that Fontaine has rather cleverly engaged in re-engineering that subtly ventures out of the historical window, rather than merely providing a perfect replica. A scent that would fit just as well between the decades, in the France of little Nick or his mother at the end of the 1950s. Holiday accords. As commented here by Pluto, the opening features a decent dose of galbanum, which makes the lilac appear cooler than usual, in a lively yet rather green-floral company, hyacinth streaks, everything else remains in lilac mist. On point, refined, and excellent!

Vacances = the time of love, the time of vacation in the middle of the year, the time of joy and friendship, the time of . . . . .
Vacances by Jean Patou is another lilac-colored creation as a perfume. Just as there are many different species of lilac (between 20 to 25 species), there are also many different lilac scents in perfumes from various brands. (for example, Simone Cosac Profumi "Osé", Ineke - "After My Own Heart", Ex Nihilo "Sweet Morphine", Puredistance - "Opardu", lilac from Yves Rocher, Roja Parfums "Lilac", and before that "Guerlinade" from 1921 or 1998 from Guerlain and many, many others)
I always love and admire the lilac tree for its colors - from snow white and yellow, to dark or light purple, to red and blue lilac, and especially for its unique and instantly recognizable scent.
I like Vacances by J. Patou the most because of its lilac-like quality, its green freshness, lightness, and good longevity. It never gets tiring and never boring. I am speaking of the new version 2014/2015, which I consider very successful with a good price-performance ratio.

Vacances feels like a light, green, velvety lilac-scented breeze that accompanies us along the street whether walking or driving. Lilac adorns our gardens, the villages and cities, and also nature in and without sunshine.

Vacances evokes the state of carefree freedom and leisure during the holidays in May/June, when everything is already blooming bright and colorful, the days are long and warm. A wonderfully fragrant and joyful time. One can also sit casually dressed in the park or garden on a wooden bench with an exciting book in hand, or chat with friends or acquaintances. Or one can simply sit quietly alone and observe the surroundings under the birdsong, dreaming and enjoying the day and lilac scent, realizing that the world is beautiful, and that we actually don’t need much to be happy in life!
