Disappointing Dissonance
This is not your typical amber comfort scent.
The frankincense note and fixatives used are identical to the ones featured in Habanita and, combined with a rough blast of ill-fitting top notes, Molinard's Ambre threatens to venture into headache-inducing territory. Thankfully the composition begins to smooth out around the half hour mark, though even then the overall impact is soapy and almost medicinal.

I have to admit some disappointment; while Molinard's Ambre is far from unpleasant, it's not at all what I anticipated considering its name and note structure. Molinard has chosen a particularly cool, almost austere blend of resins while simultaneously scaling down the vanilla aspect. This gives the smoky incense free rein to overwhelm the vanilla note entirely, leaving proportions so uneven that the amber accord itself is lost. A jumble of modifiers during the heart adds to the dissonance. It's only when the base notes are left completely on their own that the scent comes into its own... but it's too little, too late.

Judging Molinard's Ambre alongside other ambers I find it sorely lacking. Perhaps its faults would be more forgiveable if the fragrance was honest in its attempt to be something else, or if there were not so many more fulfilling ambers available?

Patience Pays Off
The opening of Molinard AMBRE is quite harsh to my nose. I blame the lavender and the strong citrus. Something smells slightly off. If that scent persisted, then I'd have guessed that my bottle had turned. Instead, after a couple of minutes AMBRE begins to transform for the better... and the better.

The second stage smells to me more like ambergris than labdanum amber--close to Balmain AMBRE GRIS. This stage persists for a bit, but the scent gradually becomes sweeter and the patchouli becomes more and more marked. By the end, a spiciness is coloring the composition, which seems much closer to labdanum amber in the drydown.

Molinard AMBRE offers an unexpectedly complex journey, and it's probably the best value in the vast amber category--provided that one can patiently ignore the opening blast of loud citrus and lavender. I bought this bottle blind on the strength of my past experience with Molinard and my undying faith in a house which has managed to persist--and remain independent--producing perfume in Grasse for more than a century and a half.

Maybe this house doesn't use all of the newfangled technologies and aromachemicals, and maybe that's a very good thing.

Nice but Plain
Nice if a little plain, Ambre is one of those fragrances just drifts in the background and does not want to make no
waves like most scents do A nice meekly
Church lady or a bookish librarian will
enjoy this. the opening is nicely done
with the sharpness of citruses and the warmness of amber adds to the coziness
the wisp of incense add to the mystery
and the note i can detect of Iris brings
to an powdery touch.

Sweet and Opulent
Ah yes, Ambre by Molinard, that's something good. A wonderful oriental that puts sweet amber (or is it ambra?) in the spotlight, along with a lot of vanilla. To balance it out, there's a hint of orange in the top notes and beautiful geranium in the heart. Together with the benzoin resin, this makes things interesting and prevents the perfume from appearing too one-dimensional. Well, it's not exactly a marvel of complexity, but it's pleasant and fun.

Ambre reminds me of a large, juicy cheesecake with rum-soaked raisins in it. One can easily indulge in a piece more than one should. Amber is a very delicious perfume, and one has to be careful not to get too quickly used to its scent. After all, the longevity is moderate, which is good in this case. Because for two hours, this scent is very nice; any longer would be a burden.

Those who enjoy the sweet, vanilla-oriental direction will find a typical representative here. A great winter cuddle scent!

Dusty
Well, here it is, my first Molinard and also a blind buy. I let myself be swayed again by the fragrance pyramid and the comment from Apicius. When Molinard launched this scent in 1993, it was certainly contemporary: spicy sweet, slightly musty earthy due to patchouli, but today it’s a no-go for me. You can almost smell the age of this fragrance. Ambre (the name is not a program here) starts off slightly citrusy/orange-spicy, but is quickly overwhelmed by the strong heart note of spices and lands, in short, in the opulent sweet base of creamy musk, musty patchouli, and sweet vanilla. And there we have the culprit that olfactorily ruins the experience: the patchouli, which is omnipresent in this fragrance. It comes through right from the start and gives the scent something old and dusty until the end. This classic fragrance composition is probably more suited for the generation over 60. What a shame, otherwise it could have truly been a "cuddle scent" for the cooler season for me.

I love!! It is a warm and balsamic amber with a vintage powdered tone, amazingly beautiful, unisex and with a moderate performance.

Vintage-dusty amber powder with the spice of clove and a hint of dry-bright incense. 70s Indian shops, nostalgic and reminiscent.

Why does Shalimar come to mind? Because of bergamot and powdery vanilla? Subtle, yet spicy, but still a bit in that direction!

Old-fashioned in the best sense. Sweet-smoky-spicy vanilla with bright citrus sprinkles. I also sense a certain resemblance to Shalimar.

Old sample: Smoky-woody-spicy-resinous-incense. Bitter-light creamy-spicy, earthy patch. Hint of citrus-floral possibly. Beautiful.
