Not merely a pretty rose, a funny one too
LAP's Drôle de Rose (Funny Rose) starts as a powdery, lipstick, boudoir rose. It's all cosmetics, fru-fru, pink & girlie at the top. The heart reveals more complexity with the iris & violet, but then something happens. Drôle de Rose takes on a slightly sweet musky character. Eventually, it becomes a dark, red, almost spicy, rose, but one still appropriate for the bedroom. It's got a bit of leather in it - only enough to make you pause, not enough to label this a skank scent. This is the seductress's rose, but it's ever so slight ... only a whisper.

The primping rose is the top & heart. The vamp rose is the base. I'm not sure if that is what's supposed to be so funny (ie, droll or drole) about this rose, but it's very unusual. I quite like it!

Lipstick Rose minus the wax
There is something truly appealing about violet and rose mixed together. In L'Artisan Parfumeur DROLE DE ROSE they are combined also with iris and orange blossom, but the violet and the rose dominate the composition. This eau de toilette smells flowery and sweet but not at all fruity. It also smells very natural.

The overlaps between this lovely creation and Frédéric Malle LIPSTICK ROSE have been noted by others, but I find that the scent in this case lacks the thick waxiness which makes LIPSTICK ROSE so lipsticky. Here there is only a smidgeon of base. I do not detect the leather listed in some of the hierarchies around, though the honey makes sense since this is rather sweet.

DROLE DE ROSE is like a homecoming queen. She's impossible not to like in day-to-day dealings with her. She's upbeat and friendly toward everyone, which is why she is so popular. She never says anything negative and does not embroil herself in disputes of any kind. Whether this may ultimately be out of apathy or fear, we cannot know. We see only her sweet smiling surface. She's really very pretty but not all that deep.

A sweet powdery -leathery perfume
"Drole de rose" was my third choice for perfume because of it's powdery notes-it isn't a "powder bomb" like "teint de neige"-it is greener and a lot lighter.
So when you first spray you smell immediately the rose but after a short time appears a light sweet powder thanks to white honey, the star anise, the violets and of course the almonds.
And in the end appears the leather which makes the perfume so unique!!
I could say with three words that it is a sweet powdery leathery perfume, that everyone could be addicted to it!!

An accord of vintage rose
L'Artisan Parfumeur's Drole de Rose is a testament to the brand's storytelling artistry, with its fragrance description evolving subtly over time.

Drole de Rose, now discontinued, had most recently been described by L’Artisan as the scent of glamorous women preparing for a night out. They conveyed an Old Hollywood appeal, with mentions of satin heels, dressing tables, movie stars, bowls of roses, and fancy powders with big fluffy puffs. It was portrayed as the epitome of glamour that an impressionable young girl might aspire to someday embody.

However, their original description of the fragrance offered a more intimate perspective on this classic feminine ritual.

They originally described Drole de Rose through the eyes of a young child sitting on the bed, softly chewing candy, and watching their mother get ready for an evening out. The scent was characterized as a "memory rose," recalling the moment the mother kisses her child goodbye, leaving behind the soft scent of her violet-tinged lipsticks and rose powders.

This portrayal offered a glimpse of a woman's glamour as seen through a child's point of view, where beauty was intertwined with love and familiarity – a nuance somewhat lost in the later description.

The perfume's pale pink color perfectly captures its essence: a delicate, girly, pastel scent reminiscent of makeup bags, candied lipsticks, and high-end powders, along with soft, sweet roses. Despite its vintage vibe and powdery notes, Drole de Rose remains timeless. It is 'vintage for today's modern girl', combining elegant feminine charm with a girlish, youthful spirit.

Quirky Rose
This fragrance is a blind buy. It was available for a small fee directly in the sale at L'Artisan, and I simply ordered it. Right off the bat: I have not regretted it for a second!

What a beautiful, yes, cute scent comes from this square bottle. Right upon spraying, I perceive a wonderful, bright, floral, and even slightly elegant fragrance. As I later discovered, this is the harbinger of what awaits me as it develops.

For a while, it becomes slightly herbaceous and greenish, almost a bit bitter. But this impression doesn't last very long. A nutty, floral, sweet, and lovely scent emerges - at least directly on the skin.
From a certain distance, I can again perceive this delightful, bright floral note that already greeted me when I first sprayed it from the bottle.

Everything here is bright and cheerful. The little rose doesn't push itself out of the line of flowers. It is a beautifully and very well-balanced composition of all components, and although no pyramid is specified, there is certainly a development to be felt, at least this interesting transition from cheerful to herbaceous to sweet and back to cheerful.

The fragrance also fades out just like that; the longevity could be better, and the sillage is close to the body. Not a room-filler but a little joy-bringer.

Really a quirky little thing, this quirky rose! I smile a bit because it is a true "Happy" fragrance. Light-hearted and lively - I would love to dance and sing down the street.

It's quite interesting what feelings some fragrances awaken in us. I will always use Drôle de Rose when the day starts off really badly. I'm sure it will bring a smile back to my lips.

Five minutes of fresh and green rosebud just to fool you and then it's soft powderiness until it fades away after 6 hours. I like it.

Rose-raspberry lemonade with (a hint of artificial) violet. Old powdery Guerlains wave with anise and iris. For playful nostalgics.

A subtler and cheerful alternative to Lipstick Rose. Walking down a spring street in a pretty dress with freshly made-up lips.

What a treat. Lipstick-rosy-fresh. The leather note adds a touch of confidence, making it beautifully self-assured instead of too innocent.

The version of "Lipstick Rose" that I prefer more - the weaker and more wearable one.

Elegant. Rose in pink, green stems, lots of violets and clean musk. I wish my makeup actually smelled like this.
