A Love Letter to Maison Louis Marie No.13 Nouvelle Vague
With it’s name, this fragrance evokes the effortless charm of the French New Wave and the sunlit beaches of the Côte d’Azur. It is a modern classic figgy profile.

It opens with a crisp brightness. Lemon and muguet mingle lightly, and watery coconut sits just below the lemon. These airy notes are soon joined by a sharp, green fig, cutting through the sweetness like the clean lines of a Jean-Luc Godard film. The fig is unmistakably fresh, bitter - rather than the possible figgy earthy ripeness.

Tonka and agave lend a subtle warmth and complexity, softening the sharp edges while never overpowering the fragrance’s breezy quality. The dry-down of vetiver, amber, and sandalwood grounds the scent. The notes linger with a soft, skin-close warmth, leaving an understated trail.

Nouvelle Vague doesn’t overwhelm; it invites. It’s the olfactory equivalent of a Godard heroine strolling the streets of Nice. The green sharpness of the fig and watery coconut keep the fragrance fresh and modern, balancing the bright citrus and warmer woody base.

Disappointing fragrance with a pompous name.
With a name as pompous as Marie du Petit Thouars, a name that would suggest old school fancy French perfume roots, I was expecting to like at least one of the scents from this house. Unfortunately, everything I have tried from Maison Louis Marie has been disappointing to say the least. Nouvelle Vague was right down disgusting to me. Maybe the coconut on its own wouldn't be so bad. The same could be said for the fig. But together with the amber is a smell so nauseating that it literally makes my stomach turn. To me, it smells like a pair of house cleaning rubber gloves coated with expired coconut oil. To say that it was horrible, it wouldn't be doing it justice.

Another coconut scent
Maison Louis Marie passed under my radar since they make perfumes from a familly I don't have any affinity with (mainly woods and spices). When this one arrived with a Sephora order, I was intrigued. Having been lately on a coconut oriented hunt to add coconut scents to my collection, this one could very well fit the bill!

I already have two coconut-oriented scents in my collection: a floral coconut fragrance and a creamy almost lactonic coconut perfume. Both do not have the sunscreen vibe. The day before I tried this one, I had tested Soleil Blanc Eau de Parfum at Sephora so when I sprayed MLM's interpretation, my mind immediately went to Tom Ford's perfume. Both are quite similar. They have the same sunscreen, creamy and lactonic coconut vibe, like a walk on the beach as the sun is setting while the sunscreen fades lightly on your skin. It's a calm, soothing fragrance, one that is light and airy, perfect for summer... It's a lovely interpretation of coconut and a less-expensive alternative to Tom Ford's.

To be honest, even though coconut water is listed as a top note, it stays throughout the duration of the perfume. It's quite obviously the star and the other notes tend to disappear beneath it. Never smelled the lemon or the lily of the valley. Agave and tuscan fig does lend a non-descript fruity aspect at one point, but the tonka bean is the strongest in the middle notes, giving everything a more powdery, vanilla-like aspect to the omnipresent coconut accord. The base notes round everything off with a woody, warm accord.

Overall it's a nice fragrance and, like I previously mentioned, a nice non-expensive alternative to Tom Ford's interpretation. I brought my wirst to my nose quite often, but it still won't make the cut: the sunscreen vibe is just too obvious to me. A lovely perfume nonetheless for those who don't mind this!

I didn’t know you can smell vague but here we are. Almost foggy between coconut water and fig.

A light, fresh, beachy solar floral. Like a chic French lady’s version of Cheirosa 87. Loved it!

Strong alcohol sting on first spray. Drydown smells nice and refreshing, but it's really weak. Incredibly disappointing performance.

Smells like a tart coconut water, which I love! Subtle but elegant scent to wear in hot temp. Reminds me of clean pool water for some reason.

Smells like warm rubber and foam on paper dry down, like when you buy a mousepad and its smells strongly. (From Jan 25 2025)

Creamy with an edge, sweet and fruity but floral and green. Fig and muguet doused with coconut milk, and warmed with amber and tonka.

Smooth coconut, nice fig contrast, dries down sweet and slightly resinous. Makes me want to be somewhere tropical with a drink in hand.

Smells like lemon cleaner and windex when first sprayed it, and it does sweeten up after it starts drying down but can’t get rid of the cleaner scent
