Anime Sante by Maria Candida Gentile
Judging by its name, I expected “Anime Sante” (or Holy Souls) to be a perfume composed around the note of frankincense. This in itself would be a very gratifying idea to me as Maria Candida Gentile surely knows how to incorporate the note effectively into her creations without making it smell too churchy or overwhelming. “Sideris”, “Exultat” or “Gershwin” exemplify not only the perfumer’s technical expertise, but also her artistic sensitivities. Imagine my surprise then when I first smelt “Anime Sante” and detected no trace of frankincense whatsoever. Instead, its head is dominated by a sweet flowery aroma of frangipani, so sweet in fact that at times it reminds me of the smell of pink bubble gum. To my relief, however, this phase lasts only for a couple of minutes. Although the sweetness never recedes completely, it becomes less intense and more palatable in the heart where a combination of melon and almond milk adds a gourmand accord to the scent. This accord permeates the drydown with the support of benzoin. Nevertheless, at this stage woody notes emerge as well, which tones the sweetness down even further.

“Anime Sante” will appeal to lovers of sweet, floral-gourmand fragrances. While that might sound like a description of some banal, uninspiring product, fear not. In Ms Candida Gentile’s capable hands, it turns into a lovely scent. Well, I guess the lady holds the title of a master perfumer for a reason.

Uncommented Fragrances No. 140

A fragrance is called Holy Souls, it launches on All Saints' Day or All Souls' Day, and if you enjoy stepping into a church, you might dare a little blind buy. At Maria Candida Gentile, which I consider one of the most interesting perfume manufacturers, there are small, handy, and very decorative 15 ml bottles that can be purchased at acceptable prices. The service includes the rather expensive, yet incredibly fast express shipping service from Italy to Germany, so you can have the fragrance in front of you in no time.

Since today is the Catholic holiday of All Souls' Day, which fits perfectly with the name of the fragrance, I will venture to make the first comment on this idiosyncratic scent. While one could somewhat imagine Anime Sante as being sweet based on the aforementioned ingredients, I am ultimately a bit disappointed that it turned out exactly as I feared or expected. The almond milk is likely responsible for the scent appearing quite sweet in combination with mild resinous tones and a diffuse floral note. Essentially, not much happens. Shortly after spraying it on skin or paper strips, a milky, yet powdery sweet note develops, carrying a hint of resin. If there is indeed melon in it, it cannot assert itself against these accents: I do not smell it (addendum: Very late, a melon note emerges on the scent strips, but not on the skin). Now, Frangipani is not exactly one of the lighter floral scents, and thus a milky sweet, powdery floral accord unfolds that reminds one of a dessert (rice pudding with cinnamon) and is certainly better suited for women's skin. Perhaps the fragrance can provide a bit of comfort in mourning situations (All Souls' Day is the day of remembrance for the deceased), as it recalls childhood days with its comforting sweet, gentle, almond-soft, and cinnamon-fine note. Overall, I quite like the fragrance. A test is recommended.
I wish you a quiet, comforting All Souls' Day!

Sweet-mildly sour with feminine, rosy florals and a spicy base of cinnamon. Very, very potent first hour. Linear, fun, pretty.

Definitely different to the usual MCG approach. A saccharine poptart/jello scent with little development. Appealing to some but not me sadly

Each creation from MCG is unique. This perfume is no less. Sickly sweet, synthetic warm toffee/almond feel. Great sillage, but I'll pass...

Comforting for All Souls' Day: almond, milk, cinnamon, fine resin: a scent wafts over from childhood.

Floral-fruity in a quirky and beautiful way. Frangipani is somewhat subdued, sweet melon on creamy-resinous sweetness. Needs to be dosed just right.

The holy souls initially smell like dusty fruit syrup. Fruity, even a bit nutty. After 10 minutes, only fruit tea remains.
