Sideris
You can call Maria Candida Gentile's fragrances anything but run-of-the-mill or bland. In each of her perfumes I've sampled so far, I detect a vast amount of originality, expertise and passion for perfumery. Her creations are far from straightforward or instantly lovable. On the contrary, it takes some time for their wearer to get under their skin and appreciate them. This was certainly my case. I'll never forget my first encounter with a Maria Candida Gentile perfume, “Barry Lyndon”. At first, I just did not get it at all. Fortunately, instead of deterring me, that experience stiffened my resolve. I kept testing it and now “Barry Lyndon” is one of my favourite perfumes from Ms Gentile's line.

“Sideris”, inspired partly by Cesare Pavese's (unrequited) love poem, is another fragrance from Maria Candida Gentile. Unlike “Barry Lyndon”, I found “Sideris” a little less challenging. It was the flawless blending of all its notes that struck me right away. None of them is allowed to “shout”, yet there are quite a lot of them that are perceptible even to an untrained nose like mine. “Sideris” opens with a pleasant combination of saffron and myrrh, which is soon joined by incense. However, don't expect any pungent, churchy incense. What we are given instead is a soft, incense-y background. In the heart, I pick up a delicate rose note, once again playing a supporting role rather than being the star. The whole fragrance rests on a pleasant benzoin and vanilla base which provides it with a hint of sweetness. Somewhere along the way, the Greek mountain tea sideritis is supposed to feature in the perfume, but since I've no idea what it smells like, I can't confirm nor refute its presence.

All in all, Maria Candida Gentile's “Sideris” is an extremely well-balanced and beautifully composed fragrance. It's a perfect olfactory interpretation of Pavese's poignant poem and so much more. Whenever I smell it, it reminds me of an embrace. A warm, reassuring embrace from a close friend whose mere presence makes my heart jump for joy.

Wonderful
In my opinion Maria Candida Gentile is one of the best perfumers around nowadays. Her scents are so difficult to discribe. She perfected the art of blending (very high quality ingredients) and her perfumes are not a combination of loose ingredients, but much more of a rounded new scent with a lot of facets. Anyway it is hard to brake down her perfumes and to isolate the different ingredients in order to discribe them. So I won't.

I love the incense and the resins fibe in Sideris. It's warm, woody, balmy, powdery and comforting and it's sweet, but not cloying. It's more feminine than masculine. This is a real beauty that has taken a very important place in my collection.

Peppery Sands
At first white pepper dominates the resinous top note, but it calms down enough to allow the labdanum, myrrh and frankincense to rise, accented by a funky saffron. The rose heart supports the top and the mild base lends a creamy, woody undertone. This is an odd fragrance, which makes me think of veils in a desert breeze. For me it's interesting, rather than lovely, because it keeps me analyzing and searching for a feeling as the notes coalesce. It's a pepper-incense scent I admire, but don't find myself succumbing to, emotionally.

In the morning you always come back
Sideris was created by Maria Candida Gentile. According to her own statements, a night walk along the Ligurian coast in Italy inspired her: "The moment was so beautiful that one could feel like floating in the air, between the sea and the stars in the sky".
She dedicated it to the last star in the morning sky, from Cesare Pavese's poem “In the morning you always come back”, which he wrote for his beloved, the American actress Constance Dowling.

S is an unusual fragrance that immediately envelops you in a sweet balsamic embrace at the start. Pure labdanum, very soft, with a hint of smokiness.
It continues with a herbal green character, distinctly smoky with myrrh and incense, perfectly combined with sweetness.
It reminds me of an eucalyptus or coniferous forest. The fresh green of the leaves/needles paired with sweet resin.
The delicate note of rose becomes noticeable after about 15 minutes, but it plays a subordinate role.
I perceive S as an extremely lively fragrance, a play between balsamic sweetness and smoky herbal notes.
The base is soft, cozy, and I detect a hint of honey.

However, I can easily imagine a night walk through a forest in the south, everything is quiet, and the mind is completely free to perceive the scents that the trees emit.
After the walk through the forest, I sit on the beach and watch the last star in the night sky, the first rays of sunlight gently outlining the horizon, beautiful....

S has an exceptionally good sillage and lasts a very long time.
I really like the fragrance; it is anything but a common scent, yet I probably wouldn't wear it often (unfortunately, I rarely have the opportunity to wander at night in Liguria), as it is a bit too heavy for me.
My sample vial is completely empty, not a drop left, so I can only try to remember this olfactory experience.

Fragrant Shrubs of the Mediterranean
"Sideris" is a fragrance that is entirely composed around the resinous scent of labdanum. This resin is obtained from the "sticky herb" of the cistus shrubs, which grow exclusively in the Mediterranean region alongside other maquis and bloom in spring. During this time, they emit a heavy, sweet scent. The inspiration for "Sideris" is said to have come from a night walk on a Ligurian beach, where the cistus grows among other plants.
The implementation of the natural impression is successful; I can distinctly smell the balsamic, honey-like note of the resin, while woody notes conjure images of the sun-dried, intertwined branches of the maquis. As an imaginary journey, this is quite exciting, and I immediately feel transported to the south, hearing the crickets chirping; however, during my walk, it is daytime and the sun is still noticeably shining.
Unfortunately, not much else happens. The roses indicated as the heart note are completely lost in the slightly pungent scent of labdanum. This is really a shame, because in another fragrance shaped by labdanum, Bois d'Iris, it is precisely the floral note (the iris there) that makes the scent so interesting. Saffron and pepper are also unfortunately not detectable in Sideris and do not add any spice to the fragrance. Myrrh and incense can be detected, but they also do not give the fragrance any edges or corners and do not provide a more exciting twist; they merely accompany the sweet, sticky resin scent. And so the fragrance remains rather one-dimensional overall.

A spiritual journey in form of fragrance. One of the most beautiful incenses I have smelt, light but present with a ethereal feel

A veil of incense and rose over creamy sandalwood. Sideris feels like a soft embrace laced with pepper, myrrh and balsamic calm.

A powdery floral fragrance. I don't get any woods and just a sprinkle of resin. Smells traditional and European.

Cassiopeia Rose is really similar to this one. A safer purchase if you enjoy olibanum (frankincense) and rose together

Peppery, incense-y rose with a resinous, pencil shavings woody dry down. A bit too confronting at first but mellows out with time

If you're looking for a frankincense scent that's not too sacred and more moderate, you'll find a lovely example here with rose, herbs, and resin.

Frankincense is usually too sacred for me, but not here, thankfully. However, the scent is a bit too sweet and floral. Still not bad.
