More Maximum for Massimo
Thanks to a fortunate turn of events, I received a fairly full 200 ml bottle of Massimo Dutti Eau de Toilette a few days ago. My first encounters with the brand were back in 2007 during a trip to Portugal. In Lisbon, I discovered a huge Massimo Dutti store with textiles and fragrances. Although I didn’t buy anything, the label has somehow been likable to me ever since. A few years ago, a Massimo Dutti boutique even opened in my hometown - a reason to engage more with the brand and especially its fragrances. I submitted a few of them quite dutifully to Parfumo.

But only now, with the Massimo Dutti EdT in my possession, am I able to conduct an extensive test, and I am essentially delighted.

The scent starts off with a restrained citrus-spicy note, featuring a slightly lavender-like sharpness. This is essentially nothing special, but it comes across quite naturally. The nutmeg adds a welcome warmth, while the hint of cinnamon brings a touch of refinement. Oakmoss and patchouli crown the Eau de Toilette with a pleasant, somewhat fougère finish. However, not much more happens. One could also say that what does happen quickly becomes passé.

This is extremely unfortunate, as Massimo Dutti EdT is excellently crafted, quite classic, and ideally suited for the office environment. Not too overpowering to annoy colleagues or to draw unpleasant attention from the boss, but subtly sensual enough to charm female coworkers. And perhaps the flirt factor would be even greater if the scent didn’t present itself as so short-lived and close to the skin.

Regardless - Massimo Dutti EdT is a fine fragrance for many occasions. And in a stronger concentration, it would be a hit!

Pleasantly Flattering Aromatic-Citrus Fougère
Surprising - not a single comment here about "Massimo Dutti" fragrances! Then I will change that :-)

First, to provide some context: "Massimo Dutti," although it sounds Italian, is a company founded in 1985 in Barcelona, Spain, and is now 100% owned by the Spanish Inditex Group (brands include Zara, Bershka) that focuses on the production and distribution of clothing and accessories. The portfolio now also includes several fragrances, such as the men's scent "Massimo Dutti," introduced in 1988, which was initially produced by Myrurgia (under Ramón Monegal Maso) and has been manufactured since 2001 by the industry giant Puig (after the acquisition of Myrurgia by Puig, other brands include Carolina Herrera, Nina Ricci, Paco Rabanne, Comme des Garçons, Jean Paul Gaultier, Prada, etc.).

Puig describes "Massimo Dutti" as "a fresh, natural fragrance, ideal for use during the day." This can certainly be accepted - "Massimo Dutti" is a subtle, unobtrusive, pleasantly friendly citrus scent that retains its citrus character after its fundamentally classic opening with bergamot and lemon plus lavender, and expands it with floral notes of jasmine and lily of the valley, all of which, as mentioned, is not loud or intrusive but very soft, rounded, and harmonious, rounded off with a soft-mossy-woody base. A very nice, completely unexcited, serene scent that gently embraces the wearer.

This applies at least to the current formulation, as I seem to remember that "Massimo Dutti" was considered a powerful-masculine Spanish representative of its anything but quiet genre in its early years. I have not been able to find any information on this, but I will search for vintage versions (that is, at least before 2001, the time of Myrurgia's acquisition by Puig), both for the sake of the fragrance and as a not insignificant chapter in the Monegal history.

Wonderfully Balanced
I am already known here as a lover of affordable and unknown Italian fragrances; it's about time I also include the corresponding Spaniards in my favorites...

Thanks to the esteemed colleague Bertel for the enlightening background information. When Puig takes the helm, it's no surprise that "Massimo Dutti" has the following characteristics: Natural, spicy, balanced, universally applicable, and - last but not least - affordable.

The fragrance pyramid is so classic that I had no doubts about whether I would like it with this blind purchase. More than that, this scent covers so many areas, users, and occasions that other manufacturers would really have to feel embarrassed in the corner: Whether young or old, work or leisure, summer or (hm..., okay, winter probably doesn't work, but every other season does), it simply works all the time.

Present yet unobtrusive; rare enough to stand out (pleasantly); with decent longevity and just the right skin-close sillage. In sum, truly great.

It's quite affordable and easily available on the bay as well. The ultimate all-rounder, and this without any marketing or advertising nonsense. The gentlemen Boss, Lacoste, Gucci, etc. could not only take a slice but many slices from this.

Puig, I just like you...
_____

Addendum: Ha, Yatagan and Hordak. Now I've caught both of you, haven't I?

Encounter with Senor Dutti
Barely has he enjoyed his Cortado and set the small porcelain cup down at the counter, when this remarkably elegant Senor Dutti has already disappeared again.

From the friendly "Ola" as he entered the small café behind the Iglesia de Sant Bartolomeu, to the quick kiss he blows on the cheek of the young dark-haired waitress as a farewell, only a few moments pass. He appeared so refreshed and unflustered right from the first moment, as if the oppressive heat of the day could not affect him at all. Endearingly charming, yet not a bit intrusive or disturbing. The pretty dark-haired girl smiles after him. Did she really flirt with him?

His very well-groomed impression stands out refreshingly from the never-ending streams of tourists, who are already pushing through the picturesque town around the Placa d´Espanya in overwhelming numbers during early summer. Senor Dutti is the living and undeniable proof that one can go about their daily tasks without sandals, unspeakable shorts, checkered functional shirts, or silly T-shirts and baseball caps.

The subtle scent of his aftershave wafts lightly by, his full, slicked-back hair shines well-groomed but not at all oily. He seems as if he has just come from his barber, whom he has been visiting every second Saturday at half past ten for decades. He does not visit a nervous hairstylist, but rather a solid, calm craftsman who has learned his barbering skills from the ground up.

The purple silk pocket square he wears with his beige linen suit has a charming nonchalance that almost seems cheeky. The pastel shirt is freshly washed and subtly scented with lavender and jasmine, the top two buttons, of course, undone. Inevitably, the gaze wanders to his custom-made leather shoes. Cognac-colored, stunning. There is not the slightest hint of vulgarity that one can often smell from a distance on other gentlemen of his indefinable age. That macho lustfulness is completely absent from him; he is simply too unflustered.

Perhaps he lacks the fiery passion that has been stereotypically attributed to his countrymen for ages. But Senor Dutti does not care about any of that. In his younger years: of course. During his Sturm und Drang period: certainly. But today: Y que? What does it matter? He no longer needs to prove his masculinity. Not to others, and certainly not to himself. Does he still have enough of it? "So please," he smiles away any doubt with a knowing look. If he allows someone close enough, they can feel the animalistic side in him.

One would gladly chat with him and listen to the warm timbre of his voice, enjoying a little more conversation; he is such a charming conversationalist, this gentleman, but God knows he is no windbag. He is a pleasant companion with an interesting core. Even this brief encounter feels like a small performance, enviably stylish, dignified yet without drifting into seriousness.

And just like that, he has graciously thrown out his Adios! to the group, which everyone else in the café responds to just as kindly. "Ya nos veremos! We'll see each other again!"
Hopefully soon, because the pleasure was undeniably too fleeting. What a pity.

A Slightly Musky Moss-Cinnamon Torero
The rather rare case of a Spanish fragrance that comes under your nose here. One immediately notices how strongly the French and Italians dominate the perfume market.

What’s strange about this scent is the rapid change of the individual phases. In the first 2 minutes, a juicy, rich lemon overwhelms you, surrounded by lavender.

This is pleasing and makes one expect a fine summer fragrance.

And then...bam! As if someone flipped a switch - the opening suddenly falls apart and tips towards nutmeg. Oh, this is not for me, and it was not to be expected after the opening either.
The nutmeg note has a somewhat dusty spice rack character, somehow pressing.

What a pity, this transformation. Although the fragrance overall comes across as rather light-footed, it’s too musky for me. In the background, a hint of cinnamon emerges and takes away some of the urgency from the nutmeg.

Still - on my skin, the impression of spices remains. Eventually, a bit of moss appears, accompanied by subtle wood nuances.

So, the Torero doesn’t really suit me for the reasons mentioned.

When the autumn winds from the Sierra blow on Gran Vía in Madrid, nutmeg and cinnamon warm in a mossy way.
Cult fragrance.

More spicy than citrusy men's fragrance. Lavender sprinkled with nutmeg + cinnamon. Barely any flowers. A classic all-rounder. Sillage/strength mediocre, but longevity good.

More spicy than citrusy, and lasts from 12 to noon. In Spain, you can get 200 ml for 10 euros with shower gel at the supermarket. Any questions?

Yes, the nutmeg is undeniable. All in all quite harmonious, but unfortunately, after 15 minutes, there was nothing left to smell from the sample.

A classic, unobtrusive Italian that reminds me of a tidier version of Grigioperla without its sweet-dry finish.

Citrusy-spicy with welcome nuances of nutmeg and cinnamon, along with fine oak moss and a light patchouli finish. Unfortunately, a bit short-lived.
