A nice sweet generic perfume for the budget-conscious beginner
Mauboussin existed since 1927 as a jeweler in Paris, but their foray into perfumery in 2000 with launch of the first perfume, composed by Christine Nagel. Unfortunately, they haven’t made the jump to be the next Cartier making great perfumes. Currently, most of their perfumes are available around $25 at discounters. Pour Lui in Black is a flanker of another generic fragrance, Mauboussin Pour Lui. Pour Lui in Black is a composition of Nathalie Feisthauer, created in 2014.

It opens with a strong black of orange and caramel, with nuances of mint. This intense sweetness puts it apart from other generic men’s perfumes. These opening notes continues for an hour or so, until the perfume more aromatic and woodier. The middle notes are listed as sage and cedar, which I can neither confirm nor deny. The base notes and dry down continue to be sweet and woody, with guaiac, benzoin and patchouli. It is a nice ending though I cannot separate out the notes. The overall generic vibe is that of an airport perfume boutique. However, this is a good perfume to wear when you are home, and you don’t want a lot of sophistication.

I like the longevity and projection of this perfume. It lasts 8-10 hours on my skin. The sillage is good, though a bit generic. It can be worn at work if applies lightly, a few hours before you get there.

Mauboussin pour Lui in Black is a good perfume for the $26 I paid for 3.3 oz. But there are so many similar options at this price point. You are likely to find comparable perfumes from Faconnable, Lalique and many middle eastern perfumers at this price point. Even some designers like Givenchy sell their vintage perfumes at this price range. I recommend this as an inexpensive starter for a men’s collection, particularly when someone is conscious about their budget. It has the distinct personality of a teenager’s perfume. But it is a good inoffensive perfume to reach for when you don’t want to think too much about perfumes. I hold on to it and wear it occasionally to remind me how my olfactory sensibilities have changed.

Led onto thin ice...
Paris, Place Vendôme on a cool autumn morning - a temple for all capital hedonists who, despite every yellow vest movement and social empathy, cannot detach themselves from their lifelong passion for luxuriously beautiful objects. Here, in the melting pot of vanity, there is no room for understatement.

Perhaps Mauboussin suffers exactly from the fact that they have always operated in the shadow of Boucheron and Cartier, and always seemed a bit more down-to-earth - I might almost say "more German" - than their competition, while of course not denying their Parisian lightness.

Nevertheless, they were never the first choice for princesses from the Emirates or newly rich Russians, but rather for upscale bourgeois ladies who wanted to treat themselves every now and then. The crisis in the jewelry industry hit the traditional jeweler a bit harder than the big players. In the meantime, they have moved a few streets away, to Rue de la Paix.

I have often purchased smaller pieces of jewelry there - not as gifts, not for wearing, but purely for viewing. Perhaps it is due to my very humble origins that I am still fascinated and calmed by the sparkle of the stones and the sublime shine of the gold, especially when they come together in such timeless elegance as with Mauboussin.

Aside from the outer packaging, this pour lui in black has nothing - absolutely nothing - in common with the legacy of Mauboussin, although the wonderful deep black bottle actually suggests otherwise, as it does remind one of the equally black cases of Mauboussin jewelry.

What a cheeky top note wafts into my nose! Caramel with a mint accompaniment, and if one were malicious, one could even describe it as "toothpaste in caramel macchiato," which would not do it full justice, as it still presents itself cheekily, and thus seems more irritating than repulsive.
Fairly quickly, the scent glides into an endless March violet bed, but it appears anything but shy and reserved, rather like a little, cheeky girl who bluntly sits down next to you on a park bench and starts chattering. You cannot be angry with her, even though she is quite persistent.

Mauboussin's pour lui in black belongs in a league with Moschino's Uomo, could almost be the little sister of the latter - not due to the scent profiles, but because of the unrelenting openness. Forget any form of adulthood. With both fragrances, wild teenage parties begin that couldn't care less about quiet hours.

After a while, the violet girl smiles at me. She is now a bit calmer but makes no attempt to get up and go home. This bothers me less than Boucheron's Pour Homme EdP on my other wrist, which, with its cultivated-aristocratic citrus aromas, appears much more complex, entirely different, and more thoughtful. Here, worlds are colliding.

I cannot really recommend Mauboussin's pour lui in black. At least I do not want to smell like that. It is completely unsuitable as a blind buy. Rather, it is for experimenting for all those perfume aficionados who already know all the scents and are always on the lookout for a surprise.

Waxy Caramel Candy, Slightly Violet-Flanked
Wow, another first comment!

I recently came across Mauboussin for the first time, with its already 12-year-old, hay-like "Homme".

"In Black" is certainly not a novelty, the description of darkness, night, blackness, whatever... is no longer original.

The scent itself can be described as solid. At the beginning, it is quite benzoin-heavy, the nose is somewhat waxily constricted, while the aforementioned, quite accurately recognizable caramel butter pushes forward. Sweet, undoubtedly rooted in the gourmand category, but fortunately not overwhelming or sticky sweet, rather lightly arranged, making it quite suitable for the office.

Sage and especially violet become more and more apparent after about 20 minutes, the scent drifts towards slightly herb-floral nuances, which, however, remain clearly embedded in the waxy-sweet, always somewhat caramel buttery initial aroma.

"In Black" ultimately lingers in a rather shallow, somewhat softened aromatic spectrum, the violet doesn't stick around for long.
It remains somewhat simply sweet, gourmand, minimally mild woody.
Best described as okay, but for some office-goers with a penchant for gourmand delights, it is certainly practical and usable in its refined calmness.

Velvety Polished Violet Profile
At first, one can perceive an intense fresh sweet fruity, very subtly bitter note, which is enveloped by a bright, discreetly cool shimmering, slightly fleshy greenish, typical minty note that, in my opinion, ensures that the 'mandarin' appears extremely soft, even showing the tiny hairs, thanks to the combination with the 'mint'.

These two notes are enveloped and simultaneously surrounded by a gradually more noticeable, slightly salty and also very subtly buttery waxy, sweet gourmand nuance that smells of already cooled liquid caramel candy, which gives the top note, despite its still slightly effective consistency, a pleasantly dense appearance and suggests 'caramel'.

A little later, the waxy aura has completely departed, and the now slightly warming liqueur-like caramel merges with a very dense and also voluminous sweet floral note that carries very bright and clear, almost a bit soapy lovely floral accents, as well as a deep dark, somewhat mystical cream-lotion-like side, and I thought I perceived the use of 'dark violet':-).

The violet is accompanied by a subtle, yet well-present, slightly aromatic, ethereal herbal undertone that, in my opinion, is responsible for the fragrance not drifting into the mundane, but rather exhibiting a pleasantly wearable fresh distinctive profile, and I considered the use of 'sage' to be possible.

These two notes are supported by a very smooth and bright appearing, very subtly resinous woody nuance, which I also recognized as 'Virginia cedar', woven in a particularly beautiful manner, and ultimately gives the fragrance creation a certain attractive velvety polished masculinity.

In the last 4 hours, the fragrance becomes subtly creamy delicate, slightly balsamic and subtly powdery, almost transparent, smelling of warmed whole milk chocolate with vanilla foam, thanks to the 'benzoin', providing a pleasant cozy effect to the base.

At the same time, the benzoin is flanked by a penetrating veil of 'rosewood', reminiscent of dark red rose petals and their dark wood, and is led to the perfect fragrance conclusion by a very tender, elegantly used, yet seductive 'patchoulized' earthy sweet nuance.

Overall, the fragrance lasts 8.5 hours on my skin.

The sillage is designed from the beginning for a clearly noticeable whole arm's length for 4.5 hours, before it gradually reduces to the fragrance conclusion.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to our Parfumo "Honk1510" for the decanting.

Somehow different than one might think…
I saw this fragrance among the discounted perfumes at a perfumery and immediately took it after a brief first test. Then it sat in my closet for a while, and I completely forgot how it smells.

After a very fresh and gourmand start, the wood of the base note quickly comes to the forefront. At first, one might assume it has a good sillage, but for me, Mauboussin pour Lui In Black was only perceptible close to the skin after a short time. However, it does have very good longevity. I really like the beginning of the fragrance, but it develops into something rather unremarkable for my nose in the drydown. A bit uneven, but by no means unpleasant.

I find it hard to categorize it, as I don't really see it as an everyday scent, and for an evening or going-out fragrance, it is a bit too weak.

Conclusion:
For collectors, it's a nice piece because it's affordable and certainly makes a high-quality impression. The fragrance will likely evoke different opinions. I would describe it as a creation that takes some getting used to.

Salted, sweet, and bitter... what an unexpected scent! It begins with caramel note, turns into flowery violet, and lasts as a bitter gaiac!

Stronger and more distinctive than LUI, the light florals are underlined with roasted sugar nuts. Still remains an office scent.

A tangy little fruit! What starts fresh and floral becomes woody over time. Good longevity, but average sillage.

Starts with a fine minty-caramel note. Unfortunately, it fades too quickly and only the violet remains. What a pity.
