Vacation photo

This July I spent on the Ionian Islands. I love Greece, I've traveled the length and breadth of it, I've admired it both from land and from a boat, but Kefalonia and Ithaca have surpassed everything I've experienced so far. Above all, they are still resisting the devastation caused by the tourism industry, seizing more land for huge hotels, golf fields and other entertainment that no one needs on a nature vacation. As a result, the Islands are still green...and smell indescribably beautiful.
Ithaka can be perceived as an olfactory vacation snapshot: there is cypress, light sun-warmed wood, there are magnolias and sour citrus, and there is a mystical incense note, resinous, even smoky, alluding to one of the Greek mythological tales. In fact others may consider Meditorrosa’s scent as an attempt to recreated Ulysses’ journey home.

The fragrance is interesting as the sweeter woody note returns every now and then, intertwined with dusty incense and labdanum and the freshness of needles and bergamot, just to take over the scene for good after an hour or so, and linger on the skin and in the air.

A scent which brings smile on my face and makes me think about planning the next holiday.

The Odyssey, Smoking Sirens, George Clooney, and a Sea of Magnolias and Resins

Ithaca, wasn't that the island where the guy from the Odyssey wanted to go? What was his name again? Ah, George Clooney played him. He was hardly survivable without his Dapper Dan pomade and always slept with a hairnet, escaping with his equally unintelligent fellow inmates from a penal camp in the South, formed a band with a colored guitarist who had sold his soul to the devil, which landed a huge hit without realizing it, and was seduced by sirens with the song "You and me and the devil make three" and robbed by a Cyclops selling Bibles, and all of this, as it turned out in the end, just so Clooney could get his wife Penelope back. Hmm. But there’s no ship in that, and Ithaca is a Greek island after all. Besides, there’s a ship on the bottle too. With Poseidon, wasn't there something about man-eating Laestrygonians, the sorceress Circe, and the Hermes shipping? I'm totally confused. Finally, there’s this poem by Cavafy, which describes life as a journey to Ithaca, after which one only understands what these Ithacas meant at the end of life. Phew, now I feel small. So, I’ll give it a try.
The journey begins with smoking sirens, here charmingly with the accord of fruity magnolia, bergamot, and incense, where the citrus notes evaporate after a very short time, leaving the smoky-fruity-floral scent with a certain heavy sweetness for a long time. I find this accord quite strange at first, as I have never smelled anything like it before. I associate it with those circular white-red striped lollipops from my childhood, only in a more refined and successful form.
After about half an hour, the various tree resins begin to emerge more and more, creating a slow-motion wave action on Poseidon's sea of viscous resin. First, there’s the slightly fruity-medical benzoin, which seems to symbiotically connect with the magnolia, as well as the incense resin being distinctly perceptible. The latter sprinkles the overall impression, making it coarse-grained, associating with a smoldering fire on deck, before later a light dark leather note resonates (labdanum - in my opinion, the best phase of the fragrance), which alternates with the earthier patchouli and nagarmotha notes and becomes darker, deeper, and sweeter as it progresses. The landing on Ithaca begins after about four hours and is completed after another two to four hours. The winds of Aeolus blow first in the upper moderate range before retreating closer to the body after about two hours. I think this odyssey begins in autumn and ends in spring.
