A Melancholic Piece of Music

An artist's studio. A small room, closed air, the light barely penetrating through the heavy curtains. Old and dusty furniture decorates the interior, including an old piano and an antique writing desk. A bag of coffee beans rests next to an old mug with remnants of black coffee, a full ashtray, and a music sheet scattered with a work in progress. A requiem. For whom? For oneself. One's soul. And then the dust. There's so much dust. It can wait. Composing is more primordial than dusting. Creation never sleeps.

That's how I imagine Little Song from Meo Fusciuni. A dry, dusty, very aromatic vetiver fragrance that makes use of the most authentic "coffee" accord, one that smells of freshly roasted coffee beans. Not your sweetened coffee, not your latte, not even your black cup of coffee. It is the smell of the beans right from the grinder. A marvelous smell, perfectly captured. The entire perfume unfolds as a rich aromatic experience, from the coffee accord and ginger in the top to the liatris, sage, and tobacco in the heart, and vetiver in the base. My type of vetiver. Dry, earthy, slightly nutty, mildly aromatic, and married to a perfectly dosed note of civet. There is a withered rose somewhere, clinging to life. It lends a "boozy" quality and marries smoothly to the coffee and tobacco accords.

A melancholic scent, one for introspection and moments of artistic contemplation and creation. It reminds me of the way orris and vetiver pair in Iris Silver Mist to create that somber-gray effect, but here it's not as cold, but more of a somber-sepia tone due to the use of coffee, slightly drunken rose, and aromatic tobacco. A little song full of meaning and depth.

Burnt coffee grounds

Coffee in perfume form is almost always disgusting if the perfume is too literal about it, and Little Song is no exception. Yes, the topnotes do smell authentically of coffee, but not, to my nose, like a freshly brewed pot, but rather like the dusty, flat, grainy-singed smell that pervades the air around a coffee roasting shop, which is so intense as to induce nausea. This would be bearable if the accord changed or evolved with time, but it remains as this brownish, bitter dust that lingers in the air, losing perhaps 10% intensity with every passing hour. Worse, the coffee is mixed with a cheap, sweetish liquor note that if I didn’t know any better I’d peg as Southern Comfort, aka liquid regret. Yes, I do understand that this is likely the Turkish rose. But it somehow twists and warps into the shape of booze, and I never succeed in reframing it in my olfactory memory bank.

The drydown is more brown dust, this time a light tobacco. Aomassai, Coze, Santal Noble, Oud Luwak, even Santal Nabataea – these win at coffee because the note is woven into a richer, more complex woody background rather than spotlighted under a glare it cannot withstand for long. People on Fragrantica saying that Little Song is like Noir de Noir but richer should have their login credentials revoked, because (for once) the Tom Ford is the significantly better perfume. At most – and this is me being generous – this is like Intense Cafe by Montale, an unbearably loud, syrupy concoction that mixes Turkish rose and burnt coffee to similarly ill effect.

Scent of intimacy

It all starts in the kitchen of a house made with old wood and with the aroma of a mound of coffee beans in the center of a table illuminated by a beam of light.
There is a melancholic and introspective aura. The aroma is delicate and does not project with chemical bombs.
There are small dusty clouds in the air and in the background a huge door opens through which we enter a library. Shelves of books and stairs upon stairs lead to a distant dome. So far away that it is difficult to understand where the surreal space ends. A mystical scent of wood and parchment hangs in the air. A light, smooth and intimate fragrance. A place of solitude and sweet memories.
In the atmosphere remains the deep note of realistic coffee beans resting on rose petals with the color of nostalgia. This poetic courtship between coffee and rose gradually gives way to the growing heat of tobacco and woody and resinous tones. Someone walked by recently smoking a Cohiba.
Finally in the drydown walks a breeze of musk, labdanum and vetiver.
Everything is in semi-darkness with discreet alcoholic accords that invite you to a meditative and abstract state. It is cosy, earthy and silent.
We sat at a table in a dark and mysterious corner. On top is an old typewriter where a sheet of paper sleeps with a few lines written on it. Next to it is a projection machine. I light it up and on a distant screen comes the image of Nick Cave. Shortly after, the sound of one of his songs invites us to stay.

Little Song (small melody) is a masterpiece among all, widely unknown and much better for those who have the joy to carry it with them, a reflection on the solitude necessary for creation and waiting in this time that flows, wilts and freezes materials. A background of cool coffee, a dusty rose , a cigarette that ends up burning slowly between the fingers. Time is running out and the little melody keeps running through my head.

Most unusual evolution in a coffee fragrance

From time to time you have the privilege of trying a perfume that is a work of art. It is a special fragrance that stops you in your tracks, takes your breath away, and makes you sit and listen carefully to its story. Little Song is so beautifully blended and progresses in a very special way on the skin, that it keeps you hooked like a child listening to a fairy tale for the first time, trying to anticipate what is going to happen next.

At first it is assertive, throbbing with pink, peppery aromas, a hint of bergamot, and ginger. Maybe it's a story from the East? You take a sip of coffee from the freshly brewed cup and let yourself be carried away by the song. Coffee is aromatic, gentle, sweet, it cradles you in your arms. Quite late, in a completely unexpected way, roses also appear. A plot twist? You raise your eyelids weighed down by the lullaby, and you smell a divine aroma of coffee, roses and a thin cloth of tobacco that rhythmically appears and disappears. The smell is surprisingly complex and versatile, it delights you and takes you 8-10 hours through many sensations. When I wear it, everyone asks me what it is, what kind of coffee I bought, can I give them the name of the brand?

Meo Fusciuni (Little Song) este un parfum deosebit care te oprește pe loc, îți taie suflarea, și te face să stai să-i asculți atent povestea. Este atât de frumos îmbinat și progresează într-un mod foarte deosebit pe piele, încât te ține acaparat ca un copil ascultând un basm pentru prima oară, încercând sa anticipeze ce urmează să se întâmple. La început este asertiv, palpitând cu arome roz, piperate, un strop de bergamot, și ghimbir. Poate că este o poveste din Orient? Iei o gură de cafea din ceașca proaspăt preparată și te lași dus de cântec. Cafeaua este aromată, blândă, dulce, te leagănă în brațe. Destul de târziu, într-un mod complet neașteptat, apar și trandafirii. A plot twist? Ridici pleoapele îngreunate de cântecul de leagăn, și adulmeci o aromă divină de cafea, trandafiri și o pânză subțire de tutun care apare și dispare ritmic. Mirosul este surprinzător de complex și versatil, te încântă și te poartă 8-10 ore prin multe senzații. Când îl port, toată lumea mă întreabă ce este, ce fel de cafea am cumpărat, pot să-le dau și lor numele mărcii?
