A new perfume by Meo Fusciuni for women and men, released in 2024. The scent is woody-smoky. The longevity is above-average. It is still in production.

Dark but not gothic
Opening in the form of a thick medicinal smoke of cade oil and incense like a dark fog, impassable and without exit. Notes of liquorice come and go like the only fireflies in this disturbing ecosystem. We are totally lost, panting and surrounded in a forest without sky or light.

Be patient with this linear opening because the progression of the perfume only slowly resumes its path a good hour and a half later, with a floral vegetal heart of Osmnthus, Vetiver and Peony subtly powdered.

It is not the bouquet of flowers but just a few touches to soften the dark subject and begin to give it hope.

The darkness is there from the beginning to the end of this perfume but the irradiation changes as it evolves.

From an anguishing and claustrophobic darkness, this one becomes softer and comforting afterwards, with a humid woody finish carried by Patchouli, cedarwood, musk, leather, sandalwood.

Having already Tyrannausorus Rex by Antonio Guardini for Zoologist, I find that this one delivers a better work on the theme of dark and smoky perfumes. For my part, and despite a crush on 6 Meo Fuscuini, I am skipping this Buio, which does not mean that it is uninteresting or poorly made.

On the contrary, some could easily put it on their wishlist.

Walk in a thick leather jacket through an autumn, dark forest
The scent is hard to compare to any other scent. The main notes that resonate here are the dark and smoky notes of juniper oil and the spicy notes of vetiver and patchouli. Since juniper, it goes well with the incense notes, of which there are quite a lot here, so the whole thing is of course quite smoky. If I had to describe what this scent reminds me of, it would probably be a walk in a thick leather jacket through an autumn, dark forest. The scent also reminded me some wooden cottage with an old wooden chest of drawers full of dusty old books in thick leather covers.

Projection and durability are very good.

Light at the end of the tunnel. A fragrance of hope!
When I first sprayed the Buio on, it was one of those rare pockets of stillness where the world fades into the background and contemplation begins.

I wasn’t prepared for the gentle force of it, how it would develop, unexpected yet familiar. It wasn’t just a scent; it was a passage—into darkness, yes, but a darkness that was comforting & familiar. I could also see some light far away.

Buio starts with a blend of intimate incense & cade oil, with added powdery nuances from carrot seeds & the darkness of cade oil. An hour later, the some florals bring light to the scent with a creamy ambery dry down.

What I found very interesting was, as Buio settled on my skin, I found myself drawn back to how I first discovered Meo’s initial works. I felt there was that same sense of quiet revelation, a feeling of having encountered something deeply personal yet universal. *Buio* feels like a reminder that there is beauty even in what remains unseen, and that darkness, too, has its own light.

Overall, Buio, is special, a scent full of contrast, a scent full of light and contemplation. Very poetic and complex yet familiar if you are aware of Meo’s signature/DNA. Buio will envelop you in darkness, yet would leave a trace of light behind.

Here you can find a small interview where I spoke to Meo about the scent. Hope you will enjoy it.

A dying bonfire
This is one of the fragrances that in my opinion best represents Giuseppe Imprezzabile's style: intimate, evocative, deep, personal. It is perhaps not the best he ever made technically speaking (Viole Nere remains my favorite in that regard), but certainly the sensation Buio manages to evoke, that of a bonfire lit in the "dark" ("Buio" in Italian), slowly going out, leaving behind a creamy accord of Patchouli and Sandalwood, is not one you can find easily.

A Journey Through the Darkness of One's Own Thoughts
"Perfume is a soul that shapes your shadow" - Meo Fusciuni

Hardly any sentence describes it better than the one by Meo Fusciuni himself.
For me, Buio is an echo of the night. A silent companion that walks with me.

Almost every evening at 9 PM, I set out. My evening walk through the quiet small town. The street lamps provide some light and cast shadows. In the houses and apartments, dim lights, tired people behind the curtains. A few people with dogs and late returners share the streets of the night with me. I linger in my own thoughts and feelings. I wear Buio.

For me, Buio captures this reflective mood of the night well.
I smell the edge of the forest, climbing ashes, and a resinous mist settles on the ground. But it also smells to me like silence, which is only perceptible in a city at night. Shadows that lay across the streets and thoughts that cling to memories and events. I think, I am. Buio is there.

Dark, earthy, and resinous root wood is dominant and beautifully balanced, just as I know from all the fragrances of Meo Fusciuni. Very pleasing, meditative, captivating, and enveloping. Added to this are the flowers in the night. The peony represents transience, and the geranium emits a warm rosy green scent even at night. The magnolia keeps its blossoms open at night and smells even stronger in the twilight. It is a transitional plant between day and night. And the osmanthus? It belongs to the fragrant night bloomers. The scent unfolds particularly at night. Moreover, it is a symbol of longing and memory. It exudes a velvety, apricot-like depth with a melancholic touch. Thus, the flowers accompany the scent progression in the background. Meo, you fox! Together with the wood and the vetiver, I perceive the scent progression very close to the ground. Strong, spicy, and earthy. Meditative and introspective.

What touches me is not only the entire fragrance experience of "Buio | Meo Fusciuni," but also what it stands for: shadow and light. Life and memory. Everything in balance. This is reflected here, as in all works of Meo Fusciuni, already in the bottle. Cap and glass. Same shape and weight. Contrasts that do not contradict but complement each other. Yin and Yang in Italian.

Buio was created during a phase of intense self-reflection. This phase was musically accompanied by Nils Frahm. Also one of my favorite pianists of today. I mention this because it is worth listening to something by Nils Frahm while enjoying the fragrance. I found it quite exciting myself.

Thank you, Meo, for this wonderful fragrance experience and the great companion for thoughts and personal reflection in the evening. (Of course, it works during the day too :))

Derivative yet Meo's best (but In Extremis wins), also compared to other frags with this DNA. Smoky floral must try!

It's dark, I get a cold metallic smell from it. Interesting, I like this kind of interesting! Quite a bit going on transitions nicely.

Carrot skin meets cold, smoky juniper.
Very earthy, but also medicinal, metallic, spicy.
Florals, resins add creamy, leathery, sweet facets.

Similar mood to Tyrannosaurus Rex by Zoologist . Very linear and long lasting opening with a smoky medicinal single accord before evolution.

The drydown of T-rex (piercing, fresh, medicinal, yet slightly flowery smoke) made into a slightly more wearable, usable daily, creation.

A lonely night in the woods by a burnt-out fire. Heavy on cade oil and patchouli; an interplay between woody, leathery, and smoky notes.

Similar to T-Rex but with much more measured use of cade oil that doesn't overstay its welcome.

A more complex version of Lita if this could help. Heavy on cade oil, dark woods, liquorice feeling mixed with some leather & floral notes.
