The Olfactory Protective Amulet
Recently, in a fit of irresistible curiosity, I treated myself to a small decant of this expensive potion. The top notes had intrigued me the most. Cypress, iris, and juniper - a mixture that seems to require some getting used to.
So, here we go … the first spray on my wrist and in that moment, I feel like I've fallen into a barrel of gin. High-quality, very berry-like gin, but unmistakably a strong spirit.
Fortunately, the alcohol dissipates as quickly as the thought of the gin barrel came to mind, and in the next moment, I find myself unexpectedly on a narrow forest path…..
It’s early autumn. Harvest time. Time for berries and mushrooms. The leaves are already beginning to turn reddish and golden. In the early morning, it was so cool that I had put on a light jacket. But now, as the morning progresses, the sun breaks through the foliage, making the leaves sparkle and the berries smell rich and plump. From afar, the soft sweetness of iris root wafts towards me, caressing me like a gentle breeze.
I take off the jacket and tie it around my waist to enjoy the warm rays of the sun on my skin. Gradually, the berry scent weakens, yet it still lingers in the air like the iris. The first mushrooms grow at the edge of the path, and as I dig some of them up, the natural smell of rich earth rises from the forest floor.
There must be a beehive nearby. The warm scent of honey, the sweetness of benzoin, and a fine, almost creamy vanilla from somewhere blend with the earthy depth - a thoroughly harmonious fragrance that makes me completely unobtrusively happy. In the distance, there are surely other resins, other plants, other scents, but I cannot perceive them. Perhaps they are only there to round off this beautiful, light-filled, autumn-leaf honey-berry scent.
The fragrance has carried me deep into the forest, onto new paths that I do not know. But I am not afraid of getting lost. Since ancient times, juniper berries and myrrh have been among the most important protective plants of the old goddesses and gods. Honey and vanilla are associated with the element of fire, and patchouli with the wise old Hecate, the goddess of crossroads.
Wrapped in this ancient magic - what could possibly happen to me?
