Go-To Spring Gourmand

The perfumers at What We Do Is Secret (formerly A Lab on Fire) excel at mixing fragrance categories and Freckled and Beautiful exemplifies their expertise in blending floral and gourmand notes. Somehow this fragrance manages to smell delicious without smelling "edible." I don't want to nibble on my wrist when I wear this, but I do want to keep inhaling deeply to capture wisps of orange blossom, honeysuckle, milk, and pastry crust. I'm sure on some level my associations with this scent are influenced by marketing, but the overall vibe of Freckled and Beautiful is one of an early spring afternoon with the windows open, enjoying an after-school snack of cookies (nothing too sweet - something like shortbread) and milk. The childhood association is also rooted in something ephemeral: a sense memory of a shampoo, soap, or styling product from my youth that hasn't fully taken shape in my mind's eye (er, nose).

That Girl

This is one of my favorite fragrances ever, and I've been trying to get my hands on a bottle for years. So much so that I emailed their customer service in fear it was discontinued, and they told me it was coming back in 2025. Pray for me!

This opens with pleasant florals and a hint of bitterness, but the dry down is where it's at. This is probably the best lactonic scent I've ever tried. It's so creamy and warm. You really do get pastry and milk, but like you're eating them outside at a picnic. She's everything.
