L'Eau Papier Diptyque
L'Eau Papier "Papierwasser". Trocken. Eindeutig für den japanischen Markt bestimmt.

Sticky rice nostalgia
This fragrance is mostly carried by a beautifully realistic steamed rice note. More specifically, it carries the smell of the "sticky rice herb", or Nuo Mi Xiang, Semnostachya Menglaensis (I don't know any English name for it), which is sometimes used to scent teas.

Here the steamed rice (or rather sticky rice herb) is combined with subtle roasted sesame and blonde woods, which creates an association with bamboo chopsticks and furniture. It is a bit sweet on my skin, like some rock sugar was added.

If there is any paper here, like the name suggest, it is rice or bamboo paper. Or maybe it is the rice itself, delicious as it is, but asking to be painted with colorful condiments.

After a while the white musk gains in prominence, although the sticky rice herb stays for a pretty long time as well. Near the end - after about 5 hours - it's mostly musk and bamboo wood.

I don't think it projects very far after the first hour (unless you use more than two sprays), but it is not a skin scent either. It seems to hover about 20 cm above the skin for hours.

It's hard to rate this scent. It's definitely interesting and something I did not smell in perfume before, but not for all-day or frequent wear. In any case, I don't see myself wearing this outside of my house or even when having visitors. However, I tend to associate steamed rice with childhood family cooking, hence making this a very soothing scent for me, especially the opening and the first hour. Even then, I tend to find the phase where the musk starts to overpower slightly suffocating.

In sum, a very interesting fragrance to sample and try, but definitely not a blind buy.

Savoury skin scent
A "your-skin-but-better" scent in the genre of Glossier You or JHAG Not A Perfume. That Iso E Super woody base note is prominent, but the steamed rice accord is savoury and cozy. The mimosa plays a supporting role, but definitely adds a slight uplifting freshness to the scent. Really easy to wear but comforting in the best way possible.

Musky ambroxan
As much as I love Diptyque, I can’t defend this release. They already have the perfect “your skin but better” fragrance: Fleur de Peau. L’eau Papier is a waste of display space.

Don’t be fooled by the fluffy musk and rice opening: a hefty dose of Ambrox-adjacent ingredients ensures that it dries down sharp and metallic. It feels like a half-baked attempt at AnOther 13. Its only redeeming quality is the beautiful abstract art on the label.

Diptyque, PLEASE release minimalist and natural-smelling fragrances. That’s what your brand is known for. Don’t go down the route of musks and woody ambers.

I dream of the day I buy it!
Honestly, this is one of the best things I've ever smelled. I wasn't expecting much and knew nothing of this scent. First comes to my mind my solo trip to Berlin. this hotel lobby, cozy, small, decorated for Christmas. So subtle and soft, it makes me want to curl in bed or take a steaming hot shower. It's a scent that's hard to describe, but for me it's just the most pleasant toasty musc. The more it dries down the more it becomes a second skin, almost lactonic, and I'm transformed into another hotel in Scotland. They had original milk-musc soap there, and it's just so lovely. It's also holding up in this position for so long, I could still smell it's ghost on my skin a day after i sprayed it. What a beautiful experience!

If you like skin scents, this is perfect. Gorgeous steamy rice & powdery musk. Sesame is a nice touch. A+ blending. Linear & soft.

Been feeling down. There’s something to this that’s so comforting, tender, nonjudgmental. A gentle whisper. A balm for harder times. Thanks.

Would be nice if those top notes persisted. Bergamot, iris, poudre de riz. Unfortunately degrades into a creamy white musk and ambrox base

it smells rather akin to a damp body after exercise, where somebody has attempted to cover their odour with powder without first cleaning up

Hard for me to categorize or explain, but I adore it (now). Does it smell like paper or ink? No. Does it make me think of books? Yes.

Beautifull opening burst of creamy and clean woods. With some sesame, Fresh laundry all over. To only disappoint in an ambroxan dry down

Cosy gentle rice skin scent. I'd wear it at work (I'm a librarian)

Soft, whispery woods with that organic, "grain"-y type of scent from sesame and rice steam, rounded with a sweet floral note and skin musk.
