milky beans
They did it boys, they did it. They made me want to smell like soy milk. Wow. This is a beautiful bear hug of a lactonic. It’s a nutty, blond-wood cream, ever so slightly sweetened with taro. But not too sweet. I also get that musty, Frito-y dog paw scent, in the best way possible. While I always fear these milky musks will wind up sheer, Taipei held for at least 6 hours and had a close, dense scent bubble. It’s everything I wanted in White Rice. I feel like this opaque, savoury lactonic is a profile I hadn’t come across until this year (also see Arielle Shoshana’s rice puddingy Sunday), and I love this niche. Perfectly unisex too, for all soy boys/girls/theys.

Mental Snapshot: A cloudy morning, in a city you’ve never been before. You wake up in a childhood friend’s loft. Strange, but familiar. The celling-to-floor windows yawn upon a misty jungle of high-rises and balcony gardens. You nestle under the duvets, savouring a mug of milk tea.

tl;dr: milky beans

Taro to a t
This scent perfectly nails the scent of taro! It opens with a scent that is more akin to the actual taro root rather than just the typical sweet smell. It’s earthy, woody, and starchy. Then as the scent develops the blend of soy milk with rice smells like a sweet and creamy rice pudding with a now much sweeter taro. The iris adds an even creamier touch but the woody accords make this a touch savory for a bit. As this dries down it’s a dry and woody sandalwood with nutty milkiness and earthy taro. It manages to be slightly sweet and savory at the same time with a woody creaminess all throughout. This is a dreamy scent that nails the scent profile of taro to a T!

Taro and all its various facets
I would describe this as the Asian take on the idea of a cashmere sweater. Taipei is warm, the opening reminiscent of the air lingering in a boba store or Chinese bakery. You get this nuttiness from the taro and soy milk in the opening, which gradually fades away into the smell of sandalwood softened by white musk. I wouldn't classify it as a rice fragrance though because it lacks the airiness freshly folded rice has, defenitely leans more toward the woody side. The fragrance itself is more of a love letter to taro and its various facets. It's quite well blended, I have difficulty picking out any of the individual notes once the fragrance progresses to this stage. Taipei is strong, and easily lasts over 8 hours on the skin and leaves a detectable sillage as you move. On clothing it is practically eternal. It would suit someone with a cozy aesthetic, who enjoys wearing thick fluffy sweaters and wool pants. Unfortunately that is not me, I'm glad I own it because of how conceptually unique it is but a decant would have sufficed.

The rice perfume to rule them all
Finally, a rice perfume that actually smells like rice! I love this one. It is so realistic. The combination of soy milk, rice, and taro almost evokes rice cooked in coconut milk, or the rice you would eat with a curry made with coconut milk. The fragrance is obviously missing the coconut note, but my mind kept trying to parse the creamy, milky, slightly sweet flavoring of the rice as coconut milk. Taro prevents it from being too savory without ever making it excessively sweet. The milkiness works wonderfully here. Now, there is the issue of wearability...I am not sure how practical this is to wear out and about. You will literally smell like rice, as if you just walked out of the kitchen. This is part of what makes the fragrance so unique to me -- it is very unapologetic about what it is and makes no attempt to compromise. I respect that, but it also means it can only be a "home" perfume for me, which makes it a bit harder to justify buying a full bottle.

Utterly Delicious
Absolutely intoxicating upon that first spray. On my skin I get that heavy starch + rice note (it borders on corn chip but not in an off-putting way). But the aura around me is that delicious creamy, not too sweet taro. It’s just so cozy and delicious without being cloying whatsoever. As its sillage becomes more intimate overtime, it remains noticeably delicious on my skin. I’m beyond excited to finally wear this in cooler weather to fully let it shine.

Upon initial spray, without looking at the notes, I mentally exclaimed “sticky rice!” Then it settled into that coconut-like ube/taro smell.

Pure vegetal rice in the opening, then develops a buttery note that reminds me of popcorn Jelly Bellies. Gourmand but not too sweet.

Deeper than L'Eau Papier and less powdery than White Rice, starchy taro and soy milk round out Taipei, making it my favorite rice fragrance.

This is a stunning, photorealistic steamed rice scent. It’s slightly sweet but mostly creamy and a tiny bit woody. It feels nicely unisex.

This is the best soy & taro perfume on the market. Nothing else like it. Blows any other rice scent out of the water imo

Blown away by the photorealism. Fragrant taro and comforting soy milk - evokes memories of breakfast and simpler times. So precious to me!

Rice, sweet milk, creamy, soft, great for an intimate scent or for climbing into bed at night.

At first sniff, the taro is strong! Then, the dry down becomes popcorn jelly beans to me. It smells good though, but too lactonic for me.

Sweet taro milk with soy, fresh mochi, and rice as a topping. Creamy, without being too sweet. East Asian dessert. A dream!
