Masticha my Love
A few years ago, during a vacation in Greece, I got to know mastic as a food product (I only knew the term before as glue for carnival beards).
In Athens, there was everything with mastic flavor: gum, ouzo, even frozen yogurt. I found the slightly citrusy, fresh-resinous taste/scent sensational.
About 2 years ago, I ordered the essential mastic oil directly from the island of Chios for a room diffuser, where the oldest trees of Pistacia lentiscus grow and the quality of their resin is said to be the best.
By chance, I recently stumbled upon the fragrance from Phaedon and seized a good online offer without hesitation (though I read the comments and statements here beforehand).

I do not regret it.
An authentic mastic scent that gains tension and depth from the other components. And even though I cannot distinctly smell galbanum, cedar, or vetiver in every development phase, they highlight the main player, as mastic reliably caresses my nose again and again - even into the drydown.
The scent is not loud; I even find the opening not too sharp.

At first, I was slightly disappointed regarding sillage and longevity, but with a generous application, even on clothing, I easily had about 7 hours of it today, with rather close-to-the-body projection.

Although I love green scents, Lentisque is not green for me; it is rather clear-cool-gray, like the smoky glass of the bottle, just lighter. Overall, beautifully dry-resinous; fortunately, I cannot smell any amber, as clear warmth or sweetness would not suit me.

Lentisque manages to create a unique clarifying-calming atmosphere, ideal on warmer days around 20°. Somehow a very private scent, nothing to show off or stand out.

My personal mini-break, my little mental escapade to Greece.

First a Storm and Then Calm

This fragrance is one of those that initially leaves a not-so-great impression when the liquid first splashes onto the skin. Admittedly, I raised my eyebrows right away when it made first contact. Too peppery and too artificial, this Phaedon slaps onto the skin. It’s like a hissing fury, packed with spices that rush straight to the nose. Nose hairs practically vibrate. Forehead furrows. A slight disappointment flickers across my face. Sweat beads. So it’s not meant to be. Me and Lentisque. But, one thing I’ve learned here at Parfumo and among all the fragrance enthusiasts: You should give fragrances space and time to unfold and, above all, give them a chance to let their soul speak.

I do that here too!
After Lentisque had been on me for a while, I initially ignored it because I had things to do, and before I knew it, a pleasant, dry, warm, resinous scent wafted into my nose, which immediately brought a feeling of well-being. I, with my nose close to the skin. Oh man! The fragrance is now completely different! So soft, so close to the skin. Beautiful. Dry. Resinous. Just how I love it. In no way harsh, hissing, like at the beginning. I also thought, wow, this is a stormy scent, plastered with all sorts of spices. But now it is calm, gentle. It lightly showers my thoughts. It shows its favorite side.

This beautiful warm, resinous note is accompanied by vetiver, which stirs up the dust from the dry earth. This fragrance sweeps through the sun-dried facets, spreading within the soul. Rising sun, over and over again, in my mind’s eye. This plays out before me in the dry desert and creates a wonderful image of warmth. Sunk in thought in fine sand. Along with a flowing tone of musk and soft green notes from the nearby oasis.

Phaedon has won me over so many times, and Lentisque is one of the fragrances that has made it into my collection. It doesn’t always have to be intrusive and hot. It’s perfectly sufficient when the fragrance quietly settles on the wearer and is there just for them. Because Lentisque is, aside from the start, not a greedy predator prowling the land and smashing strength against everyone’s heads. It is rather the epitome of calm. Dust dry. Yet fluffy. Nestled in the most beautiful dreams that a desert lover can imagine.

Time Out in the Macchia
Phaedon was completely unknown to me until I discovered this specimen in the souk of a nice perfumer.

The central theme of this fragrance is the wild pistachio, also known as the mastic shrub. So far, I have encountered this shrub throughout the Mediterranean region and have always been fascinated by it. The pretty green, finely divided leaves, the beautiful reddish-brown stem, and the bushy waxy shape - a very attractive shrub, but relatively unknown and hard to find here.
In direct sunlight, it exudes a moist, resinous, and Mediterranean scent.

This scent can be found in the region as incense, chewing gum (Falim), tea addition, or shisha tobacco.

Phaedon Lentisque begins extremely authentically with the full load of mastic - mastic leaves crushed between the fingers. Bitter green plant sap, the aromatic sticky resin scent of mastic - the resin of the rockrose helps out here - pure nature straight from the bottle.

Everything is very aromatic, yet delicate and pleasant. No heavy hitter here.
Also finely joined in the background is cedarwood, accompanying the resinous bitterness. After about 30 minutes, the bitterness fades a bit and it shifts into a resinous sweetness. Here comes the vetiver, friendly in support, bringing a bit of earthiness into play.

A lovely trio - the vetiver, slightly smoky, sweet, and earthy - the resin-dripping mastic leaves and the fine, calming cedarwood in the background.

Simple but magnificent - an extremely natural composition, calming, meditative.
Silage is not to be expected here, a bit more than skin close, but more is not needed here.

For me, clearly a weekend scent for spring - summer, or exactly today, it’s snowing here and I would really like to be back in the macchia ;-)

Herb and Cool
I have always associated mastic resin in fragrances with at least a slightly creamy and bitter gourmand quality. But when galbanum is mentioned right in the top notes and no flowers or fruits are listed, nor vanilla or tonka, one should prepare for a bitter scent.
Thus, "Lentisque / Spanish Bush" is immediately green and sharp from the start due to galbanum. But the mastic resin oil quickly blends in, creating a medicinal, herbaceous, cooling balm in conjunction with the galbanum. So far, I find "Lentisque / Spanish Bush" invigorating and distinctive. Then, rather unpleasantly, a sour and harsh sweat note settles over it, while the top note recedes somewhat but does not disappear. I wonder if it could be cumin or something oud. Nothing of the sort is listed here.
I already think: How unfortunate that the unsweet mastic scent smells so fermented. However, patience is required, as "Lentisque / Spanish Bush" gradually becomes woodier; from the strong skin scent, only a certain sour, bitter fruit note like rhubarb with wood remains. This also changes; I perceive an earthy smoky scent, then musk and amber make their presence known, significantly dimming the green, bitter, and sour aspects. Now I increasingly like "Lentisque / Spanish Bush." The mastic scent becomes more noticeable again and truly comes into its own for me with its green, balsamic character. A coniferous note, listed here as cedar, also becomes active. Thus, in its cool green and simultaneously balsamic woody softness, the fragrance remains moderately perceivable.
I admit that I found the description very challenging. "Lentisque / Spanish Bush" is not a scent that revealed itself to me immediately. But it has something. And whatever that is, one should definitely test it extensively before purchasing.
"Lentisque / Spanish Bush" has been classified as a unisex fragrance, but it seems more masculine to me. For everyday occasions where one must keep a cool head, I prefer exactly such scents.

Rank 1 of 21 Phaedon Fragrances from the Travel Letter
For a comment too little, for a statement too much... so here in a quick overview:

Many thanks to Schahram for the opportunity to participate in the 21-part Phaedon travel package. Generally, Phaedon offers a wide range, but there aren't many overlaps with my preferences. Thus, three fragrances quickly and clearly stood out for me that are worth revisiting in my nose.

These were:
1. "Lentisque"
2. "Oliban" (see comment in the corresponding section)
3. "Dzhari" (see comment in the corresponding section)

"Lentisque" was, in contrast to "Dzhari," the pleasant surprise of the three candidates that I tested. It is incredibly herbal, sharp, green, spicy ("Les Jeux sont Faits" by Jovoy comes to mind next) and conveys a bold and extraordinary freshness. Later, it becomes more balsamic and amber emerges. A truly remarkable and distinctive fragrance progression. "Lentisque" never runs out of steam. Good value for money. Bravo!

Very green and bold. Not for me as it's quite masculine. The galbanum and amergris are the first things that get you.

Wonderful neo-chypre that also shows a distant kinship to olibanum through its fine balsamic resinousness. Well done, Mr. G.

It's amazing! Finally, a fragrance where mastic is in focus. Galbanum adds a delicate green-bitter twist, the rest serves

Mastic resin, herbal, cool, more gray than green.
I find it very harsh and unwelcoming. Lots of vetiver, it scratches.
I see a man who doesn't smile.
