Illusion of Tea
Tea perfumes are some of my favorites. I drink tea as well so it is no wonder that the rare teas collection captured my imagination. Jo Malone has provided some beautiful moments with their scents over the years so I had moderate to high hopes for this collection. While the first three scents with the lighter colored juice were never going to impress me (I don't like green or white tea much), the last three did the trick.

Midnight Tea is not much of a tea scent at all, and I have not seen any tea mentioned in any of the notes. This is the illusion of tea. Don't expect a big black tea scent. This is a smooth vanilla composition with honey/fruity notes. It is captivating for sure. However, the price is prohibitive despite the large bottles. If they had done a bottle half the size and charged half the price this would already be in my collection. The sillage and lasting power is better than the typical JM cologne.

One Last Time Tea…
With Midnight Black Tea, here comes my comment on the last Rare Teas fragrance from Jo Malone. I must say that I liked all the scents, and of course, I have a few favorites among them. And even if this one doesn't belong to my favorites, it has still turned out to be a nice fragrance.

*sniff*… doesn’t it make you a bit sad when you reach the end of something? :(
No? … um… me neither! :DD
After all, there are still so many fragrances to test! But I’m getting tired… I’ve had enough, I’m done… (who believes that…).

The scent:
Ahh,… I feel like all the fragrance notes start to smell at once. There’s a light tea scent, but I can’t quite tell what kind of tea it is, as it’s being pushed aside by all the other notes (at least initially). I smell woody notes, incense like frankincense, spices, and sweet vanilla, which adds something soft to the initially “hard” spices and woods.
A little later, the spices become softer and weaker, that’s surely the labdanum, although I’m not quite sure how it really smells. However, the vanilla becomes a bit stronger, making the scent generally a bit sweeter.
In the end, you can really only smell a bit of tea with vanilla.

The sillage and longevity:
Even though the beginning shines quite well, the fragrance is medium-strong. With heavy application, it will stand out, otherwise, it might get a bit lost, especially on cold days.
The longevity is unfortunately a bit short at just under four to five hours, especially for a scent that feels autumnal to me.

The bottle:
This bottle is also quite large, rectangular, and tall. On the front, there’s just a small, square label with the Jo Malone logo on it, which is enough, as this minimalism in information on the bottle makes it look nice. This tea scent is filled with a dark yellowish liquid and is capped with the black, oval lid known from the other bottles. A simply described, but still very nice to look at bottle.

I think Jo Malone has done a great job with the entire collection of these Rare Teas fragrances, as all the scents really smell wonderful, and it really comes down to personal taste. Personally, I liked Oolong and Jade Leaf Tea the best. With Darjeeling, unfortunately, the tea scent was too weak for me; otherwise, it could have been my favorite, maybe I should test it again...

But even here with Midnight Black Tea, a great scent comes, especially for black tea lovers, and one shouldn’t be put off by the initially somewhat strong spices. Because these quickly soften, allowing you to enjoy a lightly spiced and vanilla-sweetened black tea, of course, for spraying on (I certainly wouldn’t drink it, don’t say I didn’t warn you!).

The scent is more suited for autumn, possibly also winter, where it might seem a bit mild or weak for very cold days. It goes as “usable for any situation.” Just at parties, disco, etc… one might want to reach for a different fragrance :D

So, anyone who likes tea should check out this scent, and while you’re at it, the other Rare Teas too :)

From Midnight to Midnight
Since no one has written anything about this edition yet, let me start with a few words about the Rare Tea Collection:
Jo Malone launched tea-inspired fragrances with its Tea Fragrance Blends back in 2011. Serge Majoullier continued this idea and experimented for four years to now release six exclusive scents that stand out from the rest of the offerings due to their pricing policy (only available as 175ml bottles for around €300), elevating them to higher luxury levels. There are also interesting differences in the production: For the first time, the tea is extracted as a pure infusion, meaning it is steeped in alcohol. For Midnight Black Tea, this process supposedly takes 100 hours, as the note becomes softer over time. The perfume is consciously designed around the tea without a classic pyramid, only with complementary additions to highlight and emphasize its inherent scent.
Visually, the distinction is made through the new bottles, a novelty for Jo Malone London after 25 years.

Black Midnight Tea sounds so enticing that I was tempted by its exclusivity ("I probably won't get this again") to participate in my first sharing of an untested newcomer.
The first attempt was disappointing:
1) I smelled, and still smell, no tea. With that, Black Midnight already misses its task, which I had blindly entrusted to it. However, I must say that despite liking the note, I am not a tea connoisseur and sometimes have difficulties recognizing it in other fragrances as well. So, an experienced nose needs to take another look to sniff out the Puerh leaves from the Chinese Yunnan province.
2) Labdanum. What I first encountered in "Sable Marocain / Morocco Sand" and which sparked a spontaneous affection in me, has now repeatedly proven to be increasingly bothersome. That the so promising labdanum dominates the heart note and detracts from my enjoyment of the midnight tea was something I did not expect at all.

The second attempt, with a more cautious dosage:
Much better. After the sweet, finely spicy, and somewhat scratchy beginning, the labdanum behaves more appropriately later on. Throughout the day, I perceive the amber vanilla much better, which waves its golden flag softly from a distance of my wrist.

The third attempt, as a sprinkled napkin on the heater:
I hoped that the tea would dare to come to the moonlight at a warmer temperature, but the Puerh spirits remain reserved. At least, it is a soft room scent, and the forbidden L-note stays shy on the cellulose.

Longevity:
A strong spray lasts from midnight to midnight, including a shower. For a tea scent, that is a long time, but here I allow myself the quibble that tea is, after all, not present for me ;)

I like it. However, I am a bit unsure to what extent this is due to the further chances and to what extent it is because I want to justify the purchased decant. I will not buy it again, perhaps use it up, definitely trade it. Still, my desire for more fragrances from Jo Malone has been awakened.

I've had this in my collection for a long time. The beautiful labdanum scent caresses my nose with the first golden rays of late summer. Lovely.

From my perspective, it misses the mark and is a flop: a sweet base that smells completely mainstream. You can't even hint at tea.

THIS tea tastes good to everyone. Not too sweet, not too bitter. Vanilla kisses amber. More for autumn.

Labdanum. And more Labdanum. Sweet vanilla and peppery sharp. Yes, there are flavored teas that smell similar - still, I would ...

Dark, smoky-vanilla resin delight - the perfumer must have only had black tea while dreaming up this scent :-)
