What Shalimar Promises, Sketch Delivers
Sketch is an ambery sweet vintage cozy smoothly blended vanilla oriental. This is what I'd imagine the 1920's Shalimar Shalimar Eau de Parfum originally to be like. Or perhaps, if it had never been invented until this day, what a newly invented Shalimar would be. My husband is put off whenever I dab on from my collection of vintage Shalimar examples, but with THIS, he sniffed the air around me and quipped "mmm.... smells like a succlent Chinese meal." (This is a meme reference btw - Sketch does not in any way smell like Chinese food, although it possibly resembles Chinese five spice powder). After his demonstrated approval I full bottled it pronto (2.5 ounces, the smallest size offered). It is huge and this bottle towers over anything else in my collection to date. Such value! And a reward of a lifetime of use. My love for Maison Violet is real as I wait to receive another full bottle of their scents, Pour Rêver "Pour Rêver (2024) | Violet / Veolay" that resembles (but not as nearly identical to) Guerlain's Fève Gourmande Fève Gourmande. This is my call to lovers of Guerlain and Shalimar to try out Maison Violet's Sketch, and be amazed.

A familiar outlier
Sketch has a very different personality to other Maison Violet scents; it gives out an assertive aura and demands to be noticed. The scent opens up like a floral and sweet army; it marches towards you and grabs all your senses. Meanwhile, a citrusy sparkle or pepper-like spiciness pops up from here and there. Gradually, the floral smell calms down and relents its forceful nature, and blends in with the spice note. Lastly, tonka bean comes onto the stage, addes a slice of elegance to the otherwise lively only experience.

I have Gran Soir as my winter signature, and particularly like its dry down (tonka bean). Not surprisingly, it is also the part that I enjoyed Sketch the most. However, there are distinct differences between the two. Gran Soir is more harmonious and refined, and Sketch comes across as rebellious and doesn't shy away from showing its personality.

I like Sketch for its non-conventional characteristics, and can see myself coming back to it in the future.

Battle of the Giants
Ladies and Gentlemen. Today marks what is perhaps the greatest fight of all time. We warmly welcome you to this spectacle and wish you much enjoyment. You can expect an unrelenting title match between two opponents on equal footing over the full number of rounds.
The fight will be broadcast worldwide, as the audience count in the hall has been reduced to almost zero due to the current situation.

In the right corner: Rose
In the left corner: Tuberose

The bell rings for the first (and last) round. The fighters have voluntarily and unanimously waived the breaks between rounds.
Rose and Tuberose circle each other, throwing initial jabs to gauge their opponent. Coaches Nutmeg and Bergamot are unfortunately unable to attend today and miss the fight, which doesn’t bother the main contenders at all. They have prepared for this finale long enough.
Rose lands the first effective hits, which are immediately countered by Tuberose.
With some delay, the referee Patchouli appears, dressed in a resinous training jacket.
He doesn’t have much to do, as both fighters engage in a fair exchange of blows without hitting below the belt.
After two hours, the fight is still raging on equal terms. Neither Rose nor Tuberose show signs of fatigue - quite the opposite of the referee, who has thrown his training jacket into the corner and is now doing his job in a chocolate-colored T-shirt.
This battle continues for a long time until the only spectators of the evening arrive: Mr. Tonka and his wife Vanilla, who have sponsored this fight. Both give hesitant applause, as this fight turns out to be not as exciting as expected.
After about 5 hours, the fight is called off by referee Patchouli and declared a draw.
Rose and Tuberose leave the ring towards the locker room, while the referee stays with Mr. Tonka and Mrs. Vanilla for a post-fight discussion and interviews in the hall.

Sketch is a well-made fragrance. No question about it. But you really have to like both Rose AND Tuberose. If, like me, you don't particularly like either, it's better to steer clear of Sketch. For everyone who enjoys both, it's a clear recommendation.

A beautifully done vanilla with floral heart & woody oriental nuaences. I also get a lot of powdery and slight touch of leather. To die for!

The best Shalimar dupe I've encountered. Better than the original.

Spicy, minimally floral and powdery patchouli scent that feels more bright, understated, and elegant than dark.

Not my style, but those who prefer denser patchouli scents will find it here. The nutmeg note sets it apart from others. More of a winter fragrance.

Reminds me of 1826 by HdP. Patchouli, subtle flowers, and a light creamy sweetness come together for a pleasant scent.

Patchouli! Not too earthy, but not bright either, warm-spicy undertones. More prominent in the dry down than in the pyramid. Benzoin? Myrrh?

Very dense yet fine mix of flowers (rose, iris, tuberose), spicy cinnamon-incense-patchouli threads & dark vanilla. Elegant & enveloping.

Patchouli powerhouse with exciting spicy, (vanilla)sweet rum sprinkles and hints of cinnamon, flowers are more subdued and just for support.

Patch + nutmeg hit you at the start, then a harmonious blend of delicate flowers, spices + patch. Bright, creamy + elegant. No hippie!

The beginning is spicy, pepper and nutmeg with a lovely rose. After about 1 hour, a tonka-vanilla-patch harmony. Subtle and elegant H+S about 3-4 hours.
