Velvety smooth gourmand facets of cocoa masterfully well-done
Never smelled "Les Élixirs Charnels - Gourmand Coquin | Guerlain", since perfumes weren't a hobby of mine when it was out, but Thierry Wasser revealed during an interview with The Perfume Guy that both had the same formulation. Fève Gourmande is some kind of a rerelease with a new name and now a part of the Art et la Matière collection.

I went to Holt Renfrew to try a couple of fragrances and saw they had this one. I was curious and so... why not? I ended up leaving as it was supper time, but I kept sniffing myself so I went back and got a full bottle. That's how good it is. Ironically, I was hoping to leave with a Guerlain perfume, but didn't think it'd be this one.

Now that you know I have a full bottle in my collection, you know I'll be lauding this fragrance. It opens up with a velvety smooth, dark chocolate. Almost bitter-sweet and sensual in its accord. I could picture a deep vat of semi-sweet chocolate being churned. There's the presence of booziness that comes from the rum with a subtle lingering of woodiness. Roses do appear briefly on my skin, giving the scent an uplifting sweet take to everything. Cocoa is like chocolate: sweet, smooth, delicious, absolutely gourmand. Patchouli gives the scent its deep, dark, sultry aspect. I don't detect a lot of smoked tea though. The spices are so well-balanced, there's not one that rises above the other. They seem to act more like support.

What got me is the depth and complexity of this fragrance. It constantly shifts on my skin, alternating between different facets. There's the beautiful dark chocolate, I've previously mentioned, with its pleasant semi-sweetness. Then there's a powdery, almost dusty kind of chocolate. There's also the rum chocolate with hints of woodiness. I can smell a creamy chocolate that reminds me of a luxurious gourmand body butter. I just keep sniffing my skin constantly. Guerlain truly knows how to masterfully blend its perfume. It's never too heavy, too cloying or too sickening. It's cocoa done right. This fragrance isn't loud, but it lasts a very long time on my skin. Even after wearing it during an evening and washing myself, I could faintly smell it next morning. This is a must-try for gourmand lovers and those who love chocolate / cacao.

I've got to say Art et la Matière bottles are absolutely stunning pieces of art. The embossed glass with the bee, the sleek, crisp cut of the glass bottle, the cap and cord that you can personalise and the sprayer all scream silent luxury. The packaging is beautiful and you can make a display out of it if you leave your bottle in it. Is the perfume expensive? Yeah, it certainly is. But at the same time, you're paying for olfactive art, for the perfumer's experience, for a mastercraft. Now that I've experienced what true perfume is, it'll be even harder to go back towards more mainstream offerings.

The should-be reference gourmand
As someone who is not usually a fan of the dramatic, cheap-smelling excessiveness that is the gourmand genre of fragrance, I was absolutely blown away by the beauty of Feve Gourmande. Yes, this is a gourmand fragrance, but it doesn't exactly present like one, at least after it's had a chance to dry down. Dare I say, I think this (and it's doppelganger/predecessor Gourmand Coquin) should be the reference fragrances for the gourmand genre. It opens with a very lush and dense chocolate note that has just a bit of a dusty facet to it. An intense burst of rum and spice follow in shortly after, which really helps solidify it's gourmand-ness. This combination of notes lasts for the duration of the wear, but as it dries the rose and patchouli notes become more present, creating a very lush and enjoyable scent profile that I haven't smelled elsewhere. Worth noting is that despite this being quite a spicy scent, it would work very well in pretty much any climate/time of year. It's a very universal fragrance. I also love that this fragrance never smells synthetic or under-developed, and that it smells like an actual perfume and not like a candle or flavoring like other gourmand fragrances do.

If all gourmand fragrances had the qualities that Feve Gourmande does, I would be a much bigger fan of the genre. I should clarify that I do think there are other good gourmand fragrances out there, but none will ever top this one. Rarely do I find that fragrances are worth such a high price tag, but in the case of Feve Gourmande it is 100% worth it, every single time.

Jammy rose and cocoa
This is an absolutely gorgeous scent and I ended up buying a full size bottle.

The most prominent notes I get are cocoa, rum and a very soft, jammy rose. I’m really not keen on rose scents so was unsure if like this, but I love it! It isn’t a flowery rose, it’s a type sugary rose. I get faint hints of spices and smoke in the background which balances it perfectly. I definitely don’t get any patchouli or tea. I can see why so many love this. This is very easy to wear. It’s definitely sexy and sophisticated! I’d personally wear this all year round. It’s a 10/10 stunning fragrance. What let’s this down it the poor performance, which is a common theme with this range of Guerlain. I expect more for the price. I still love it nonetheless.

Everything I Hoped It Would Be
Is this a bold new take on cocoa, rose, and patchouli? Not really. The value of Feve Gourmand is in the familiarity. I don't think anyone else can do this type of warm, spicy, sultry fragrance better than Guerlain. I love Ecrin de Fumee and Cocoa Libertine but this one is the clear winner.

It's so well-balanced and posh. It's sweet but in a natural way. It's sweet like dark chocolate, not like corn syrup with artificial chocolate flavor. I can single out individual elements - the jammy rose, the patchouli, the chocolate, the spices, the rum - but they're so well-blended that none are too loud.

I see some other people have reported smelling a sour note in the beginning and I do, too. It's only for a few minutes, though. I love this so much that I'm fine with it. The longevity is great as you would expect with something patchouli-based.

Edit: I snagged a partial of this on Mercari and I have no regrets.

Cacao heaven
I went to this without knowing that it's supposed to be gourmand coquin remade, which I have never tried before, so my review is about feve gourmand as a perfume of its own. I was just shocked to the core by its beauty. it's a gourmand that is not nauseating and has almost a powdery faucet to it. its definitely a cacao more than a chocolate fragrance, with some rose and some spices. the only downside I find is its performance which I wish was way better. its a shame such a beautiful fragrance to disappear almost half an hour.

Rich, festive, smooth, and elegant. Powdery spicy cocoa with a very light touch of rose. Perfect for winter holidays.

The thickest, smoothest, melted dark chocolate. Lasts for half a day with strong sillage. Pricey but no dupes compare to this.

Velvet dark chocolate and rose. Slightly spicy; sweet but not cloying.

I don't find this to be very much like Ecrin de Fumée; I like this much better. Less overpowering. Strong on the cocoa, becomes powdery.

Has a latex house paint type smell. The experience of eating a cinnamon muffin while painting a bedroom.

Odd sourness on the top but dries off into a nice and sweet chocolatey flavor that isn’t too cloying. The rose is subtle but not to a fault.

This is like wearing a Queen Anne cordial cherry, those chocolate covered cherries with cherry liqueur. Gets more powdery in the dry down.

To my nose, this is a $100 fragrance versus a $400 fragrance.

Different facets of cocoa have come to play: dark, sultry, powdery, bittersweet, boozy, creamy. All these adjectives constantly shift on me.
