Velvety smooth gourmand facets of cocoa masterfully well-done
Never smelled Les Élixirs Charnels - Gourmand Coquin, since perfumes weren't a hobby of mine when it was out, but Thierry Wasser revealed during an interview with The Perfume Guy that both had the same formulation. Fève Gourmande is some kind of a rerelease with a new name and now a part of the Art et la Matière collection.
I went to Holt Renfrew to try a couple of fragrances and saw they had this one. I was curious and so... why not? I ended up leaving as it was supper time, but I kept sniffing myself so I went back and got a full bottle. That's how good it is. Ironically, I was hoping to leave with a Guerlain perfume, but didn't think it'd be this one.
Now that you know I have a full bottle in my collection, you know I'll be lauding this fragrance. It opens up with a velvety smooth, dark chocolate. Almost bitter-sweet and sensual in its accord. I could picture a deep vat of semi-sweet chocolate being churned. There's the presence of booziness that comes from the rum with a subtle lingering of woodiness. Roses do appear briefly on my skin, giving the scent an uplifting sweet take to everything. Cocoa is like chocolate: sweet, smooth, delicious, absolutely gourmand. Patchouli gives the scent its deep, dark, sultry aspect. I don't detect a lot of smoked tea though. The spices are so well-balanced, there's not one that rises above the other. They seem to act more like support.
What got me is the depth and complexity of this fragrance. It constantly shifts on my skin, alternating between different facets. There's the beautiful dark chocolate, I've previously mentioned, with its pleasant semi-sweetness. Then there's a powdery, almost dusty kind of chocolate. There's also the rum chocolate with hints of woodiness. I can smell a creamy chocolate that reminds me of a luxurious gourmand body butter. I just keep sniffing my skin constantly. Guerlain truly knows how to masterfully blend its perfume. It's never too heavy, too cloying or too sickening. It's cocoa done right. This fragrance isn't loud, but it lasts a very long time on my skin. Even after wearing it during an evening and washing myself, I could faintly smell it next morning. This is a must-try for gourmand lovers and those who love chocolate / cacao.
I've got to say Art et la Matière bottles are absolutely stunning pieces of art. The embossed glass with the bee, the sleek, crisp cut of the glass bottle, the cap and cord that you can personalise and the sprayer all scream silent luxury. The packaging is beautiful and you can make a display out of it if you leave your bottle in it. Is the perfume expensive? Yeah, it certainly is. But at the same time, you're paying for olfactive art, for the perfumer's experience, for a mastercraft. Now that I've experienced what true perfume is, it'll be even harder to go back towards more mainstream offerings.
