A nice and very English Lavender scent. Not the smell of pure, crushed lavender, but a balanced mix of lavender and bergamot, followed by a shy geranium and a hint of musk and cedar in the dry down.
I like spraying a whiff on my pillow to sleep on (lavender is soothing and relaxing). Alternatively one could spray it on before bedtime and feel the relaxing lavender effects. I also like to spray it on my 'fancy' handkerchiefs. The pretty, lace ones that I take in my clutch to special occasions like the opera etc. I like the soap & body-wash too. Great relaxing scent with a nostalgic feel.

Different Than I Remember But Still Impressive...

*This is a review of the vintage English Lavender.

English Lavender opens with an aromatic airy and slightly camphorous lavender and citric bergamot tandem with a sharp supporting cedarwood undertone. As the composition reaches its early heart the bergamot vacates, leaving the staring aromatic camphorous lavender and supporting sharp natural smelling cedar initially by themselves, before gradually adding in herbaceous, leathery clary sage as the composition moves though its heart. During the late dry-down the lavender eschews its aromatic facet and cedarwood support as it turns mildly powdery, joined by moderately animalic musk through the finish. Projection is below average, as is longevity at 5-6 hours on skin.

English Lavender (vintage) is a composition I was exposed to as a child nearly forty years ago. The composition was quite common back then in stores everywhere, also finding its way into soaps and other toiletries. While memory can be quite tricky when looking back on a period of nearly 40 years, I distinctly remember it leaving an indelible positive impression with its very recognizable signature. Fast forward to present time, after many years of passing over buying a bottle of the vintage juice it was time to go down memory lane and make the purchase to see if those positive memories still held so many years later. Wearing English Lavender on skin as I write this, I can definitely confirm that while different smelling than I remember, the composition still is quite distinctive and impressive, only adding unexpected sharp natural cedarwood to the mix. In truth, there really isn't much to English Lavender's composition structure. It is a relatively simplistic concoction, but what sets it apart from the competition is its near-perfect execution and very solid raw material quality. Who would have thought this was a drug store fragrance? On the negative side of the equation are the relatively poor performance metrics. I don't know officially if the composition was an EdT or an EdC, but I would wager an EdC, as it has a light airy structure with relatively poor longevity. Whatever it is, it smells darn good and is still dirt cheap in relative terms on the aftermarket making even a blind buy a real low-risk possibility. The bottom line is vintage Yardley English Lavender smells different than I remember it with more of a cedar component, but the end result doesn't disappoint, earning it a "very good" 3.5 stars out of 5 rating and a solid recommendation.

Standard Lavender Fragrance

My adoration for lavender most likely began at a young age. I used to love playing amongst my Mother's herb garden, and crushing lavender stalks between my fingers. Now that I'm older, I use the scent of lavender for sleep benefits. Even though I've trained my mind to become drowsy shortly after smelling it, I do still enjoy wearing lavender rich fragrances like Yardley's English Lavender during the day.

The best thing about English Lavender is the inexpensive price tag. This is a decent lavender scent, which is thankfully easy to find. Despite being marketed for women, I would suggest that it could be worn by men too. Lavender is after all a common note used in masculine fragrances.

Yardley's English Lavender is a spicy, aromatic fragrance. It has a rather fierce opening of lavender, rosemary and geranium, which are all quite potent accords on the skin. However, shortly after application, English Lavender softens into a smooth yet alluring spicy lavender scent.

Unfortunately Yardley as a brand is quite popular amongst mature women, so younger girls often assume that Yardley fragrances will make them smell like an 'old lady', so they avoid them like the plague. Call me crazy, but I personally find English Lavender to be sensual, youthful and a touch masculine. I think everyone should test it at least once.

The only down-side to English Lavender is its poor longevity. I suppose for the price there would be no harm in re-applying every now and then, but it's still a bother. I would have bought it had it been more lasting on my skin. Concluding on a more positive note, I'm pleased to say that previous reviewers are not wrong in naming English Lavender as a classic.

The Scent of Lavender

This is one of my favorite scent. It smells of pure fresh field of English lavender. Lavender has long been a remedy for relieving anxiety and stress.

This scent goes well with Yardley London Shaving Cream Super Smooth with Silicon and Yardley Lavender Aftershave.

I recommend Yardley products particularly the fragrance. Yardley of London has a marvelous reputation for making quality products. I'm most impressed with how true the scent is.

A Classic - Almost Forgotten

I haven't thought about "Yardley's English Lavender" in a long time. Somehow and at some point, the memory of it faded away. As time goes by!

This was the scent of my early teenage years; you smelled so clean and above all, a bit different from the school friends. That was so important! A little bottle of it was always in my bag: you never knew what might happen ...
Even years later, I used this to wipe out the cupboards; a few drops of "Yardley's English Lavender" in warm water and the work was doubly rewarding. The shelves were clean and the lovely lavender scent welcomed the fresh laundry. Of course, it had also absorbed a bit of it, even if it was just the hand wash with the last rinse water.
And a drop on the handkerchief before we "went out nicely" was simply part of it.
Just like the matching soap in the porcelain dish in the bathroom and the supply of it in the linen cupboard.

Only now and here do I remember this fine, unobtrusive scent that floated so pleasantly over everything, so cozy and unexcitedly enveloped.
It is probably time for me not only to remember but also to search for a bottle of "lavender water."
It may sound a bit old-fashioned, but it feels just right.

Almost just lavender on a slim base. Found it on the shelf in the dusty hair salon (with an ö) around the corner. The scent is also dusty. Charming!
