Tokyo Memories
Acquired at the Yamamoto store in Shibuya, ‘L’Odeur 77-05’ always reminds me of my trip to this fascinating country, where the fusion of Western living standards and Eastern philosophy creates a very special culture.
The scent reflects this tension in a way and is part of a sadly limited edition of five Eau de Colognes that have only been released in Japan so far. These can usually - there was a brief exception - only be purchased as a set and exclusively in 15ml travel-size bottles. According to the brand, they are designed for spontaneous, mood-driven scenting in between.
By far, I like the fifth fragrance in this series the best. This is because it perfectly matches my scent preferences. It is a clean citrus aromatic. More specifically, it is a citrus-vetiver scent that emphasizes the citrus aspect very strongly. In this respect, it most reminds me of Zara’s ‘Vetiver Pamplemousse’, whose citrus note is, however, significantly brighter and sharper. Thus, one could almost speak of a pure citrus scent with the Yamamoto, but one that has a pleasing individuality, as will hopefully become clear shortly.

Scent Development:
‘L’Odeur 77-05’ starts with a very pronounced citrus note, which I would describe as a bitter-sweet, juicy lemon. Almost candy-like and “tasting” like yellow Nimm2s. Its potency reminds me of the lemon note in Yves Saint Laurent’s ‘pour Homme Haute Concentration’ version from 1983. An incredibly rich, fleshy fruit. The high density - one could certainly speak of a good degree of “papery” quality - I attribute, alongside a generally high dosage, to the use of supporting fully synthetic components that give the note a long and strong presence that reaches deep into the base. It is the clearly defining factor of the scent. Almost immediately, a delicate, leaf-like facet joins in. A shy, very clean vetiver that shapes the slightly green character of the fragrance. In the middle part, the scent clears up a bit through the use of a similarly bitter, slightly watery ginger note, making it a little more open and sharper, before deep in the drydown, when the citrus note slowly fades, the vetiver can reveal its gently grassy-woody nuances. It has nothing earthy or smoky about it; on the contrary - supported by a very restrained musk - it develops soapy accents. Thus, at the end, the scent profile is that of a citrus-aromatic clean scent. Slightly green in tone.Effect:
‘L’Odeur 77-05’ is, like ‘Vetiver Pamplemousse’, a casual scent with “everyday elegance.” In terms of ingredients, it is slightly above the usual designer standard and presents itself modernly through the use of fully synthetic - but never intrusive - components. Unembellished and calm. This fits well with the Japanese way of life. Likewise, its well-balanced and thus particularly appealing contrast of bitter, sweet, and sharp. However, in the citrus note, it is unusually present due to the synthetic base. Therefore, in my view, it is also excellent for the international market, and I hope that the line will eventually be released here.Longevity and Sillage:
As already hinted above, the scent lasts surprisingly long for an Eau de Cologne concentration. On my skin, it is noticeably about five hours and then several more hours with a quiet presence. The projection only slightly exceeds skin level in the first hour. The scent has virtually no sillage. Here it behaves entirely in the tradition of an Eau de Cologne. Conclusion:
'L’Odeur 77-05' is a clean, citrus scent with delicate vetiver spice, which exhibits a pleasing individuality in its rich, bittersweet lemon character. Particularly lovers of pure, slightly green-tinged citrus scents are likely to find great satisfaction here.About the L’Odeur Series:
The others are also scents that do not reinvent the wheel, but - despite some interesting-sounding notes - in contrast to the fifth, they hardly make any efforts to try something unusual. They are all rather light and mostly evoke associations with the familiar for me. ‘L’Odeur 77-01’ is a subtly shower-gel fresh scent on generic, dry wood. ‘L’Odeur 77-02’ has a slight Aventus vibe. ‘L’Odeur 77-03’ appears pale and light-citrusy, and ‘L’Odeur 77-04’ seems somewhat inconsistent in its combination of light spiciness and floral notes. However, I must restrict this impression to being based solely on scent strip experiences. I only own and wear the reviewed fragrance.
