Leather and Sandalwood

My sense of smell recognizes leather a lot (with nuances of sandalwood and iris). As soon as I spray it I feel very strong and even irritatingly burning and confused, but after a few minutes, I can feel the notes and understand the beauty of this fragrance.

It's really unisex (although I can't imagine a delicate woman using it). I can imagine either a man or a woman in leather clothes and with a lot of personality.

I don't think it's an easy fragrance to please. But, not even the Santal 33 (clearly similar) is. The difference is that I don't smell the typical pickle aroma that Santa 33 has (although it doesn't bother me at all, I love pickles!!).

In addition, it also reminded me of the smell of gloss a little before it went rancid, but strangely, it's pleasant. After it evolves, a creaminess begins to appear making the fragrance softer.

Not a clone, not a dupe but what is it then ?

First of all let me talk about the elephant in the room: yes this smells very similar to Santal 33!

Even the chosen city : New York has an association with Le Labo as there on 233 Elisabeth Street, NY they have their creative office and studio where the fill the Santal 33 bottles, to my knowledge.

Now, regarding the release, it is suprisingly good .. for a big fan of Santal 33 like myself, this smells as close to the original as you can make a perfume. You will have Beso Negro which in dry down reminds of S 33 or Flash Back in New York which is very weak and is somehow similar, like most of the Jerome Epinette creations (Vibrant Leather Zara).

This 01 New York got me by surprise because after spraying it, I enjoyed every whift and every movement of the molecules from my scarf to my nose, even with a FFP2 mask on. The bottle and packaging are spot on, and if you ask me, I think they cost Zara up to 25% from the final price so that is quite good.

The sprayer is nice and delivers a good cloud of perfume and the juice is not too transparent, but nowhere close to the Santal 33. It is floral woody and I see it better suited for a lady than Santal 33 which is more woody and a bit stronger.

For a 20€ perfume this product ticks a lot of boxes starting with a luxurious presentation up to the longevity and the quality smell of the perfume, therefore this is also suitable for a blind buy.

Given that ZARA is usually making the collections limited, it might well be that in a few months from now, these perfumes would cost 2, 3 times more on some websites .. but time will tell. Until then, thanks for reading and enjoy my video too.

Santal 33’s little sister

Energetically New York is from the collaboration between Jo Malone x Zara. A clear nod to Le Labo’s Santal 33, it would be my second pick out of the lot with Elegantly Tokyo taking out first place.

Energetically New York lacks the depth of Santal 33 and leans ever slightly more feminine but overall remains a unisex scent. It still has this refreshing tangy pickle juice sort of scent which is what makes Santal 33 so unique in the first place. For the price point I wouldn’t sleep on this scent by Zara. If you love Santal 33 but want to save your money, give this a try.

very nice unisex smell

simple, the notes say it all, although there is some richness and depth here. putting it on is like coming back home after having a walk through a snowy forest - lungs full of conifer-soaked air, you feel energized and refreshed - you wrap yourself into a warm cashmere sweater while your hair still smells of ozone and frost, and you light up a cardamom candle while holding a cup of jasmine tea.
and the best part is that you will be feeling like that throughout the entire day. seriously, it lasts forever!
it's such an elegant smell and it layers beautifully with sublime epoque from zara or velvet rose & oud from jo malone. definitely one of my favourites.

Fresh sandalwood

New York and London from the City Collection are some of the best fragrances from Zara. This one is just a very clean, fresh sandalwood (not a creamy one). 100% can replace Santal 33 if you don´t want to pay too much money. Bottle is also very good quality and good if you like to display fragrances.

I guess some people get pickle from this kind of DNA´s. I didn´t.
