A Nod To The 1990s
Fougèriste opens with a burst of green, herbal, slightly anisic lavender and citrus, a chilly “fresh” note following them quickly. While the aquatic notes here don’t go quite as far as “marine”, they are still dewy and fresh, and in conjunction with fruit, remind me strongly of the cantaloupe in Le Parfum de Therese. (I have never eaten nor smelled a dewberry, so I can’t comment on the similarity.)
As the drydown progresses, the woods, tonka, and patchouli push to the front, and the fruit retreats, a coniferous edge keeping this cool rather than warm. The powder is subdued, a much less powdery approach than in most fougères, and the fresh note remains as a faint "gloss" in the background, like a transparent cellophane wrapper.
Fougèriste feels like a throwback to the late ‘80s, early ‘90s, fresh fougère genre, and it’s a very well done one at that. It feels consistently smooth, polished, and amiable, and isn’t a “challenging” wear the way some niche renditions of the genre can be.
