Very helpful Review 6
Was Shanghai must have been like back then?!
Well, at least I hope so.
Today, we know Shanghai as a colorful and extremely modern city. But when I look at pictures of the city from the past, I realize it didn't look that modern back then. And it wasn't really that colorful either, and NO, it's not the black-and-white pictures that are to blame.

Rather, the way the city looked back then could also be found in France or even England. Very simple, graceful, but not really Chinese at all. Modern without being modern. Does that make any sense? I hope so.

I admit, I'm not a big fan of Mon Précieux Nectar, and that as a huge Guerlain lover (that's how I now refer to myself!). It just wasn't my thing. But Shanghai does this much better.
Like a delicate powder dream, here the blossom intertwines with almond, along with a touch of vintage.
But through the herbal nuances, Shanghai becomes unique. And I really like that a lot; it suddenly turns into a feel-good fragrance.
You are almost embraced and hugged, a bit like silk gently moving over the skin.
And fittingly, it's by no means too loud, staying rather close to the skin and holding solidly throughout. NO, a fragrance doesn't always have to last 12h+. That's really absolutely fine here.

But I still wonder... did Shanghai perhaps smell like this back then? Powdery and elegant through the streets, without much opulence and fuss?
I guess I'll never know, and since I've only been and stayed in Europe so far, Guerlain - Une Ville. Un Parfum 05 can be my feel-good fragrance.

You understand - for home, of course.

PS: The bottles from the entire line are really pretty and charming, fitting the concept but still chic.

Next Stop: Shanghai
The Une Ville, Un Parfum series is a limited fragrance line from Guerlain, also known as Les Voyage Olfactifs, which takes the perfumer and the perfume lover on a brief olfactory world tour, where one gets to know various scents from specific cities.

After Moscow, New York, Tokyo, and London, the fifth fragrance now leads us to Shanghai. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Shanghai or China?
Kung Fu movies with Donnie Yen or Jackie Chan? An interesting, exotic culture? Asian beauties giving you a relaxing massage? :D
Well, the last one is probably just my thought again.... :DD

Shanghai is certainly one of the most interesting metropolises overall and definitely worth a visit. However, for those who don't have the opportunity, they might catch a hint of this city through the fragrance,… at least if the scent truly reflects the city…

The Fragrance:
The opening is sweet, and I smell floral-sweet notes, but especially the lovely almonds. Anise is also present a little, but fortunately not too much, as I personally am not a big fan of anise.
The fragrance feels warm and quite soft; this could be due to the soft and floral-sweet notes like the mimosa, but also from the vanilla.
A little later, the scent becomes even warmer and more floral-sweet, the anise nearly disappears, and alongside a now stronger vanilla, you can also smell a bit of ylang-ylang, which, in contrast to many other fragrances, is quite weak and therefore not as heavy and cloying as usual.
The fragrance doesn't really develop much further and remains mainly floral, sweet, soft, and warm powdery with a slight woody note in the base.
While the scent itself always smells good, it actually smells even better in the later base. Because even if it should be weak in projection, it smells dreamily soft of delicate, warm vanilla.

The Sillage and Longevity:
The sillage is not particularly strong. It will only be noticeable for a short time or just from close proximity. I don't think there will be a noticeable scent cloud left behind.
The longevity is okay; you can smell the fragrance well on the skin for seven to eight hours.

The Bottle:
The bottle is rectangular, and like all "Une Ville, Un Parfum" fragrances, it features a drawing of the city to which this scent is dedicated. Here, you can see part of the Shanghai skyline. Next to it is a large curved five, indicating that this is the fifth fragrance in the series. The cap is cylindrical and chrome-plated. Overall, everything is quite simple, but okay.

First of all, I have to say that the fragrance is beautiful. It really smells very good; I liked the warm, sweet notes and the powdery-soft approach. The fragrance is supposed to have a slightly oriental scent, fitting for a place like Shanghai. However, I find that this is somewhat less successful, as I thought less of China or Shanghai with this scent. Of course, I am aware that it is quite challenging to dedicate a fragrance to a city, but it is just the case that I do not necessarily associate the scent with the Far East. Well, maybe I just need to travel to Asian countries myself someday, especially China, to better understand the fragrance.

That doesn't change the fact that, as I said, the scent really smells fantastic. It initially feels a bit autumnal, but due to the weak sillage, the fragrance can also be worn in spring and summer, making it an all-rounder. It suits many occasions like work, leisure, or going out (though you might need to reapply it a few times when going out…).

Of course, I could now say that the fragrance, as usual, smells lovely on women, but I think I've written this phrase too often here, so you probably can't bear to hear it anymore, am I right? :D

It's something that could or should be tried if you get the chance :)

Charm is the invisible part of beauty, without which no one can truly be beautiful.
This, as I believe, very true insight is said to come from the great Italian diva Sophia Loren.

And I think this motto can certainly apply to perfumes as well. Because what good are the best ingredients if in the end everything is just carelessly thrown together and pushed through the marketing machinery? I believe that with fragrances, you can definitely smell a certain love or, conversely, a lack of attention to detail. And it is precisely these details that create the charm and ultimately the beauty of a scent.

In my view, this is also the case with Guerlain’s “Une Ville, Un Parfum - Shanghai.” For a long time, very long, and almost so long that it was nearly too late, this fragrance passed me by. Inexplicable. Incomprehensible.

Fortunately, I was able to rectify this faux pas just in time.

Driven by the announcement that Guerlain would be discontinuing the city series, I tested all the fragrances in the series once more.

“Shanghai” is, alongside “New York,” the scent that truly fascinated me.

“Shanghai” unmistakably starts with a lot of almond (aroma), nestled on bergamot and wafted by a hint of anise. I perceive the anise as very gentle and by no means as pronounced as, for example, in “Lumière Blanche” by Olfactive Studio. More like a kind of hint of anise.

The transition from the top note to the heart note is fluid. The almond impression remains clearly recognizable, but is now somewhat softened by ylang-ylang and orange blossom. I must say that the blossoms do not fully bloom; they rather hold back subtly in the background and give the fragrance overall a bit more fullness and volume.

The almond-floral mixture now heads directly towards the base, where it is already joyfully awaited by the duo of vanilla/sandalwood and vetiver/cedar. Vanilla and sandalwood enhance the now powdery character of the top and heart notes with their restrained and very pleasant sweetness, while vetiver and cedar ensure that the overall impression does not become too sweet and cloying.

There it is again, the Guerlain art of creating fragrances that are much more than just scents. Throughout my “Parfumo career,” it has often been Guerlain fragrances that have touched me deeply, evoking images and stories in my mind. Lost in the Guerlain fragrance universe, yet still very close to me.

If I had to capture the image in a picture, it would be a bright and cheerful image in pastel tones, expressing a positive overall mood.

Because that’s exactly how I perceive “Shanghai”... as positive, bright, and friendly. A powder dream that does not take away your breath, but rather presents itself skillfully and unpretentiously elegant, spreading its charm.

If the city of Shanghai were to smell like this, it would be a fragrance paradise on earth....

A Spicy Powder Dream!
It hisses when sprayed, it's as if you're throwing something into a hot, greasy pan. Sharp, fresh, and bursting, the first impression is striking. Immediately, a multitude of spices can be noticed, cardamom is clearly detectable, and something green, it could be fresh coriander. What’s sizzling in the pan isn’t entirely vegetarian either; it has a hint of animal skin. Then a creamy scent emerges: next to the cook stands a Chinese woman who is just applying almond cream to her face - for youthful skin well into old age. Mmhh - such delicious almonds, such a lovely creamy scent! Her hair is adorned with flowers, which smell very nice, especially the orange blossom that the cook gifted her. While he sprinkles plenty of salt into the herbaceous, spicy-scented pan, I stroll through the rest of the market. I pass a stall with antique wooden chests, they exude a woody, slightly musty scent. Next door, oddly looking tinctures are being promoted. It smells earthy and dry here, and soon I recognize the typical patchouli scent, as well as the sweet, woody aroma of ylang-ylang. The fruit vendor next door is peeling some lychees to offer to a customer. I recognize the flower-adorned woman from earlier; her strong almond cream scent wafts up to me again. And now I also see where she bought the cream: there’s a wonderful stall with all sorts of creams and makeup. I open one of the offered powder boxes, and I even get to powder myself once. Oh, now I smell strongly of powder! This scent won't leave me anytime soon. And I’m back at the cook, the food is ready, and I’m looking forward to the spicy meal!

So this is nice creamy sandalwood and ylang ylang perfume. Bad thing is it just doesn’t project at all so it’s more of skin scent sadly.

So delicate, subtle, refined. I don't think Shanghai smells like this, but the abstract idea of a Far Eastern oasis is perfectly captured here.
