Tea fragrance wrapped around white florals!
Shanghai 1930 is a white florals mainly Tuberose and jasmine wrapped around fresh and green tea notes along with some warmth of warm damp earth. It’s pure joy and feels I am in a constant state of meditation! There are also powdery notes that add elegance and the fragrance is more on the fresh side when it starts but soon turns woody in the base which is lovely.

I had the chance to sit with Arturetto Landi the perfumer behind the fragrance. I hope you will enjoy this as much as I did.

A Cup Full of Calm and Serenity
The name Shanghai 1930 may raise expectations that the fragrance only partially fulfills. Instead of an exotic, opulent interpretation of Shanghai, this scent reminds me of a quiet tea-drinking moment in the garden, surrounded by blooming flowers. A moment of slowing down, accompanied by a delicate milk tea with a hint of sweetness. Shanghai reveals itself from a tranquil side.

At the beginning, one perceives a gentle bergamot that brings a light freshness to the fragrance. However, after just a few moments, the green tea note comes to the forefront. It is softly enveloped by white flowers, which lend the scent a milky softness reminiscent of creamy milk tea or matcha latte. This creamy texture gives the fragrance a relaxed, almost soothing character, without being heavy or overloaded.

Interestingly, the fruity nuances remain rather subtle in the background. They seem to support the creaminess rather than push themselves to the forefront. If one wishes to say so, the green tea is fruitier and not quite as bitter. I particularly appreciate that the white flowers do not have a strong floral character but instead act as a creamy, lactonic accent that perfectly blends with the green tea note. It has, of course, that floral touch from the jasmine, but the jasmine, like the other flowers, is rather subordinate. Towards the end, a veil of milky steam lingers close to the body.

In conclusion, it can be said that Shanghai 1930 is a light, clean fragrance that radiates a pleasant softness through its milky tea composition. The scent is not particularly profound but follows a straightforward progression, making it both unexciting and harmonious.

I understand why some perceive the fragrance as reserved - the name Shanghai 1930 indeed raises expectations of something wicked or complex. The bottle, on the other hand, could reflect this gentle and pure essence more accurately with its appearance, resembling a delicately painted porcelain cup. Nevertheless, I do not agree with the comments that label it as "fabric softener," as the creamy and clear tea base stands out for me.

Orchestra Rehearsal
Tap …. Tap …. Tap ….

He taps the conductor's baton on the podium.

So, let's get started. I would like to make another adjustment. If you would be so kind ……

The green strings, please in pairs at the outer wings, two in the middle, and one next to the White Lady.

Alone, why alone? No, they stand flanked by the green strings. That’s it. And woe betide if there’s another solo.

The foghorn, please all the way to the left. And please piano ……. pianissimo.

The oboe and bass in the middle. Yes ……. just like that.

The flower choir should distribute harmoniously throughout the orchestra just like the little fruits. The lady in purple, please to the front right.

Tap ….. Tap ….. Tap ….

The flower choir begins to hum, the little fruits join in softly and very discreetly. The purple lady occasionally shines through vocally without breaking away from the choir.

From the very beginning, the green strings provide a fine support for the voices.

And then she pushes forward. The White Lady.
With vocal power, she masters three octaves. In one go and without taking a big breath.

Tap …. Tap …. Tap ….

Strings! Where are the green strings! Now come on …… presto, catch her!
Good …….. and again piano, please.

And, my dear, one more solo outburst like that and I’ll make you sing through cotton, is that clear?

Tap .... Tap .... Tap .....

Softly, almost delicately, the horn now plays. And slowly, it gently envelops the entire stage.

The flower choir and little fruits continue to whisper. They fade more and more into the background, without completely falling silent.

Unperturbed, the green strings flank the White Lady, keeping her somewhat in check, but not taking all the pressure off the kettle as the oboe and bass now contribute in a refined manner and begin to support the strings.

The danger of a solo is averted, and the White Lady lowers her voice a bit, eventually letting herself be guided by the dark, velvety oboe and wooden bass. And the green strings also become quieter towards the end of the piece.
Tap …. Tap …. Tap ….

Thank you very much!
I think we’ll leave it at that.
We won’t change anything more.
That’s how I envisioned the piece.
Everything else is up to the audience.

This is a bit sad to say because we are talking of a master perfumer but here the DNA is absolutely 95% Musa Paradisiaca by Cristian Cavagna

Beautiful unisex spring/summer fragrance. Realistic green tea with pink florals. Fresh, a little sweet and super delicious.

Very powdery and woody, supported by almost savory florals, green tea trying to break through... It can get pretty abrasive, though.

In the greenhouse, they just watered, fresh dew glistens on magnolia, lush jasmine, colorful orchid, and thick-stemmed greenery.

A little violet all alone,
swimming through a bright sea of flowers.
Dressed up for the gala,

Violets get lost in the fleshy floral thicket. A top candidate for a headache for me. Jasmine screams and all the notes join in with a sour sweetness.

A tropical tea scent of white-blooming beauty. It unfolds slowly, becoming softer but also increasingly fruity. Curious & chic!
