Elegant Refreshment
The Trevi Fountain Number Twelve is a wonderful refreshment that relies on quite different candidates than the usual suspects, and that is refreshingly different and special. Nothing against lemons and their ilk, they always have a season with me and a large place in my olfactory heart. But sometimes it is simply exciting and beautiful to approach the theme of refreshment from a completely different angle.
Acqua di Genova does this with the XII quite cleverly, using a powerful magnolia. Bam, that hits hard at first. But immediately erase all Southern associations from your minds that inevitably come to the fore; we are staying beautifully in the sunny south of Europe, in stone cities with magnificent old buildings, shady cafés, bubbling ancient fountains, and a lot of casual and relaxed urbanity. Here everything smells chic (not stylish), elegant, intentional, and skillful.
Even the top note is a stunning surprise. Of course, bergamots and limes splash a cheerful citrus on the skin, but a creamy-spicy orange blossom and especially the magnolia provide unexpected nuances. The magnolia radiates so white, so intense, so enchanting, so rich, and so dark-dry-sharp, and this contrast to the citrus notes is really great. Alongside the classic citrus freshness, there is a lot of "perfuminess" from all the white flowers that are shining in competition here, with the magnolia clearly setting the tone throughout. This very special note gives the perfume a depth and almost something sensual, without losing its bright refreshing potential. Cool and deep at the same time. It all smells very mature and very elegant, confidence paired with serenity.
The consistency is astonishing; only after many hours does the super magnolia slowly recede, and the scent becomes greener-leafy with somehow moist-fresh-mossy hints. The scent never becomes musky-powdery for me; it remains rather clear. Truly a very beautiful Eau de Cologne alternative when something "more" or something "special" is desired.
