Alas, nobility is fleeting...
The opening of Acqua di Parma GELSOMINO NOBILE is indeed a noble jasmine. Natural, lush, voluptuous. It's a sure buy-at-the-counter winner. Unfortunately, as the perfume dries down, the all-too-plebeian base shines through stronger and stronger, eventually completely clobbering what was the natural jasmine opening. Sorry to say: this is not cedar.

I may be hypersensitive to iso-E-super, or perhaps it is fat soluble, and my cells just cannot take any more of the stuff, but I must regretfully report that I do not love GELSOMINO NOBILE. Over the course of a wear, as the day becomes more and more gray and my mood more and more somber from reflecting upon the current state of perfumery, I feel compelled to cover up its commoner base--shared with nearly every mainstream men's designer fragrance in existence today--with something, well, noble!

My bottle is small, so I do not regret having acquired this perfume scent unsniffed, but I will not buy it again. I blame the usual four-letter suspects for my disaffection with Acqua di Parma and am seriously considering boycotting all conglomerate-owned perfume houses in the future.

Noblesse oblige
I tested just a few hours ago and it was a really wonderful surprise: an intense, very feminin, rich and longlasting scent. A well balanced bouquet where the Jasmine and Tuberose notes are the main actresses.
The bottle is simple but refined , in the style of Acqua di Parma . It's undeniably expensive, but "noblesse oblige" and the high quality of this product justifies the price, at least in this case

Actually...
...I shouldn't like this scent at all.
Actually, it's far too cold for it now, in the middle of January, when the temperatures barely reach freezing point.
Actually, this is the time for gentle gourmands, dark orientals, spicy, hefty, warm - not for sunny southern colognes, chiffon-light and fresh and also jasmine-infused.
Jasmine and I usually range from "oh dear" to "oh no."
Not always, I admit, there are always exceptions, but the rule also stands.
The rule that jasmine presses me too hard, clinging almost around my lungs, nagging at my stomach and painting stars before my eyes.
Even as a soloist, even more so in tandem with tuberose.
That doesn't really feel good, it's not really pleasant.
So, not great starting conditions for "Gelsomino Nobile" and me.

But this multiple "actually" doesn't bother the scent.
Very bright, very clear, very fresh, it rises from the dampened skin, carefree and radiant like the winter sun, which, when viewed from warmth, makes every icy chill a lie against the blue sky.
A gentle, cool radiance like on an early summer morning somewhere far away - where my feet would be warmer, my clothes not so thick, and my fingers not so clammy.
Where I would see young pears, still unripe on the tree, the leaves finely beaded with morning dew.
Slowly, the sun rises higher, flooding golden-bright light around bare feet in ticklish young grass.
The air is cool like silk, semi-transparent, a hint of buoyant, weightless elegance.
Golden turquoise green, a silver thread here and there.
Bright, young blossoms, still half-closed in the cup, gradually bloom into full splendor - delicately leafed sensuality, promising yet so pure, almost innocent.
And beautiful - unbelievably beautiful.

No pushing, no twisting, no steel band around my forehead - Gelsomino is here very nobile, very restrained, almost discreet.
Unobtrusive, quiet, yet not shy, not fleetingly gone.
It doesn't flood the room, doesn't take anyone's breath away, and yet you perceive it, turn your head, seek your nose for the source.
Deep golden warm femininity on slightly heated skin, while outdoors the winter wind sets metallic accents that symbiotically quote sharp cold, without being cold.
For the sun shines far too brightly even in winter.
Not just from the bottle.
But from this one especially beautifully.

Journey to the Calabrian Jasmine Coast
Until today, I didn't even know it existed. But my little research has spontaneously added another dream destination to my list! A 90-kilometer stretch of coastline where jasmine has been traditionally cultivated for a long time. Rocky coastal landscapes alternate with countless white beaches, small villages, and of course, jasmine.
So, without having been there yet, it seems to me that Gelsomino perfectly embodies the impressions of this region.
Upon application, one is immediately greeted by a warming ray of sunshine: mandarin. Fresh, zesty, like the freshly opened fruit.
And while one wants to bask in this radiance, the main actor enters the idyll: jasmine.
That was to be expected, of course, yet it still comes as a surprise. If one had associated delicate, white innocence with the small flowers, one is now abruptly awakened from this dream in white: this jasmine does not arrive lightly and delicately, but rather with great intensity and weight, almost sultry, not a gentle breeze from the sea, but more like the midday heat resting on the blossoms.
Quickly, however, after a few minutes, one is reassured: a fine, soft component blends in the background: tuberose? In any case, very pleasant.
After about an hour and a half, I perceive the mandarin more strongly again, this time drier. Jasmine and mandarin now appear in perfect duet, along with their harmonious companions. It remains for me a late evening blue summer sky with peacefully drifting sheep clouds, rocks still radiating the heat of the day, while the gentle breeze from the sea caresses.
All in all, a fascinating fragrance with an exciting progression, the components were easily identifiable for me, thus I find the scent to be clear. It seems to be composed closely to nature, radiates quality, and moves in an intriguing in-between world of floral and fresh. A very interesting experience.

Sun on the Skin
'The same gaze, mysterious like her smile -
four years later, yet I recognized her immediately.
Waves and palm trees, at the neighboring table she drinks champagne.
I think back to then - why does my hand tremble?
Already I see the old images in my mind again.
Broken rings, the end came with her.
And now I meet her again here.'

Jasmine is one of those floral accords - similar to lily and rose - that cannot easily be subdued or subordinated. Jasmine fragrances are primarily just that: Jasmine. The essence of its white flowers moves between subtly seductive and sensually intoxicating, sometimes even downright lustful, depending on the arrangement and orchestration of the accompanying notes. Jasmine fragrances require confidence and offer presence - Acqua di Parma's Gelsomino Nobile (despite the inherent aristocracy of its name) is no exception. Yet beyond the inviting, the alluring, and the feminine qualities of the white flowers, I experience this particular jasmine fragrance as distant and cool - despite the woods listed in its base note. It entices and seduces, but offers little intimacy and no lasting warmth. Beyond the top note and beyond the elegant and confident femininity - Gelsomino Nobile is strangely soulless.

'The same magic that destroyed our dream -
the same fire that I almost died in.
Music and glasses, at the neighboring table I hear her laugh.
She no longer knows me - she has long since separated from him.
Smoke in my eyes, I burned myself on the embers.
What fate connects me to her?
Why do I meet her again here?'

In the early 80s, when it was popular to cover successful English-language songs in German - and she had already been very successful with 'Nacht voll Schatten', the German version of Mike Oldfield's 'Moonlight Shadow', the pop singer Juliane Werding released this cover of Nik Kershaw's 'Wouldn't it be good', whose German title was 'Sonne auf der Haut'. In it, she tells how she encounters again after years the woman who back then - just to win him over - stole her man. The one who is beautiful and confident and seductive and a winner, and who has the titular 'sun on the skin', but beyond this facade offers no warmth. The song strangely came to my mind while Gelsomino Nobile's glossy white floral top note faded away - which had promised so much, but was followed by little more than pale coolness. Those who are satisfied with a captivating jasmine top note will be delighted.

Conclusion, in the lines of the refrain from Werding's song from 1984:
'Sun on the skin and open hair,
tanned and never alone for long.
Sun on the skin, but inside a heart of stone.
Eyes behind glass that reveal nothing
Hunger that knows nothing of love.
Sun on the skin, but underneath nothing but ice.'
