A Vintage Affair of florals, fruits and musks…
A bewitching mix that opens with a quick blast of bergamot, grapefruit and lime before developing into a blooming bouquet of rose, iris, narcissus, magnolia and other white flowers, partnered with a juicy bite of peaches and a gentle furriness from the musks, almost akin to laying face first a kashmir rug, though only very slightly animalic.
There’s also something my nose reads as close to a white chocolate accord… or perhaps a marzipan effect from the heliotrope? Though not listed, I seem to pick up a bit of apple and stone fruit as well, potentially nuances from the florals. Could be said to have a creamy, powdery and slight “musty” quality to it, but only in the most mesmerizing of ways.
The gorgeous base begins showing itself after a couple hours, ambergris, hyraceum and civet imparting warm, sensual musk, benzoin, labdanum and vanilla creating the sense of high quality incense, clove and tonka giving spice, and sandalwood, cedar, guaic, vetiver, oakmoss and patchouli lending woody, green and earthy characteristics.
Truly does evoke the imagery Marius was aiming for—aristocratic luxury in the early 1900s. Mansions, estates and old money, sophistication, maturity and class. Could easily see it being worn by a madame of pedigree of the era. Really does conjure the inside of a manor, furs adorning the walls & floors and fruits and flowers decorating tables, old wood and quality incense filling the air with a noble scent, and the subtle smell of vanilla and cinnamon (primarily from the benzoin) rising up from the kitchen galleys below…
Sillage moderate to strong, longevity great. Lingers on both skin and fabrics excellently. Price is unfortunately rather prohibitively high. Recommended mainly for those interested in a glimpse of old-timey elegance. Leans feminine. Very sophisticated blend—I feel I only I pick up maybe half the nuances present. Truly requires a seasoned nose to fully appreciate.
Bravo, good sir!!!
