Oriental suitable for everyday use
Al `Ula is the second fragrance from Les Destinations that has moved into my home. I find the brand super exciting, but that's another topic. Al `Ula starts greenish, slightly earthy, minimally citrusy and fruity. After about 15 minutes, the fragrance becomes a little more floral and sweet, while the green-earthy notes fade slightly. Oud and patchouli are used in moderate strength, they are not dominant, but easily perceptible. I cannot distinguish clove and cistus. Rose emerges a little later, but never becomes strong. All in all, Al `Ula is a harmonious, slightly sweet, very slightly smoky oud patch fragrance with a delicate rose note that is easy to wear in everyday life. Nothing is intrusive or annoying here. I find it medium strong. The base notes used make it long-lasting. If you like layering, as I do, you can combine it wonderfully with Costa Rica from the same house, for example. The two complement each other perfectly.

Ice raspberry and rose winter..
Zack, bam, I don't need to test it on skin to know if it's going in my sample collection.
I can already smell it on cardboard: At last someone has managed to pull off the promising, but usually either lame or downright disgusting raspberry/oud combo.

The surprise in my letterbox earlier: three samples, not ordered, not a gift... A look at Parfumo solved the mystery: I won.
Yay! And not just any old stuff, but promising stories. Sprayed impartially on three cardboard strips, two of which were intriguing. So, sprayed right and left on the wrist - was driving a car, so pretty unscented -
This one, however, was different. It was not "curiosity-inducing". Instead, it was immediately convincing. The skin test can wait in peace, as I said: it has already won its place in the sample collection with its cardboard effect. My ice raspberry for dark winter evenings, refined with unsweet rose... Let's take a look! Soon this review will grow heavily. At least this review - if not my collection -
Perhaps the manufacturers have even managed to bag a customer by giving it away ;)
As Eric Cartman once said: Let's see, let's see, let's see ^^

Addendum: I will of course refrain from a rating for the time being.

Raspberry Oud Light
Immediately after spraying it on, a fresh raspberry dominates. At first I feared that the fragrance would remain linear, but this proved not to be the case.

After a short time, the oud breaks through and takes the lead. From this point onwards, the raspberry, in combination with a light rose, only resonates in the background.

Unfortunately, I don't notice patchouli, although I actually really like it.

In conclusion, I can say that the fragrance is suitable for people who like the combination of raspberry and oud, but find other fragrances in this category too overpowering.
But here we also come to the biggest weakness in my eyes: from the twist from raspberry to oud, the fragrance is already close to my skin. We're talking about a few minutes here.
For me, it is too weak on the chest.

Baxêr Hatî!
Whenever I see "oriental fragrances" anywhere, everything tightens up inside me. Too often I've tried perfumes that try to capture exactly this "vibe" but do nothing more than reproduce questionable stereotypes: You're supposed to smell like a rich oil sheikh, like a fairy tale from 1001 Nights, shrouded in exotic fabrics and mystery.

Apart from the fact that these images are long outdated and problematic, many of these so-called oriental fragrances actually smell of something completely different: Ambroxan monsters, cheap oud bombs... compositions that people rightly prefer to keep their distance from. If such a fragrance then ends up in the hands of an over-motivated teenager, the disaster is perfect. The verdict of many is then quickly: "Oriental fragrances are not for me."

As someone who really knows the Arabic fragrance culture through my family background, I can only laugh to myself. Because what is marketed here as oriental often has absolutely nothing to do with the actual perfume tradition of our regions. That's why my expectations of Al-'Ula were correspondingly low. I was already expecting the next oud massacre, trimmed for luxury but cheaply realized. But then came the first spray and with it a surprise.

No cheap oud, no intrusive, overpowering fragrance, no olfactory insult to my ancestors. Instead: A rare moment of authenticity. Al-'Ula does not smell like the western fantasy of the Orient. It smells of real, lived experience. And even though I have not yet been able to travel to Saudi Arabia, this fragrance takes me right there in my mind. When I wear it, I'm sitting in our garden in Erbil again. Under the fig tree. It's night, just before morning prayers. The city has become quieter, a gentle breeze blows through the trees and carries a breath of the city center to me. Not overwhelming, but like a dance around my shoulders. In the distance, raspberry and rose embrace as the oud creeps around them.

For the first time in a long time, and apart from Amouage, a house has created something that does justice to Arabian fragrance culture. Al-'Ula smells like home. And that makes me happy.

* Baxêr Hatî: Kurdish for "welcome".
* Thanks to Parfumo and Les Destinations for the opportunity to test this fragrance.

Floral and fruity oud
At the beginning, you can immediately perceive the raspberry in combination with the oud. The whole thing is accompanied by a light citrus note After a while, you can also perceive the rose, which, as in many other fragrances, goes very well with the oud. However, this rose is very light and gentle, so it is hardly noticeable.
The fragrance could also appeal to people who are not necessarily a fan of oriental fragrances, as it is very simple and "western".
