NorCal Galadriel

Perfectly tempered vanilla timber. Like you tried to make s’mores out of dry tobacco as your chocolate, spiced cedar for graham cracker, and guaiac sawdust + sap for marshmallow. (Faintly toasted, not smoked). The overall feel is almost milk chocolaty, without going gourmand. This was the only Liis I didn't get to sample last year and, lo and behold, it’s hands down my favourite. Admire how Liis can take two “heavy” scents – sequoia heartwood and vanilla resin – and make them feel so clean and ethereal. Bo is a chimera of favourites: the incense plume of GWater, the fluttery wood-shavings of Santal 33, and the mallowy cashmere of By the Fireplace… but made wholly its own with that picture-perfect redwoods heart. Bay Area represent. Emanation is soft-spoken, but enduring (~5h on my skin).

Mental Snapshot: A cathedral of sleeping giants. Sunlit mist wends through their limbs, sap beads from their arms like morning dew. Warm earth powders under your bare feet as you glide along to the birdsong. There are no splinters here.

Worth the hype!

I saw so many reviews for this fragrance, but had been really disappointed with other hyped fragrances, so very hesitantly got a sample of this. I cannot begin to explain how excellent this is. It's woody without being bitter, it's creamy and vanilla without being gourmand, it's tobaccoey without being smokey. It's the perfect woody creamy blend, and feels like a warm hug. Bo dries down gorgeously, and while I do wish it lasted a bit longer, I can't fault it. It feels like a perfect cool weather fragrance, one that can be sprayed on sweaters and scarves and flannel shirts.

Tribute to a magical town

This scent sits firmly within the space of aspiration, daydream, and nostalgia; a fitting vibe for it's namesake. Bo is a favorite surfing beach of mine, and it's a truly special place with a storied history and particularly Northern California quirk. The aspirational aspect comes through in an attempt to capture the magic of the specific place, which is done well in paying tribute to the woody foliage surrounding the beach and the incense emanating from the old hippies selling crystals on the sidewalk.

I understand why some may dislike the sharpness associated with cedar and the comparisons to Santal 33, but it's one element I gravitate towards in these slightly gritty, high-end nouveau bohemian compositions.

I would have liked some nod to the eucalyptus groves and seascape in town to round it out, but that's based on my personal experience. While the scent itself isn't a replica of being in Bolinas, I don't know if anything really could be, and I think this is a fitting tribute that requires some extra imagination on the wearer's end to draw from memories of time spent there.

have you ever smelled a fonta leaf?

I am obsessed with the smell of fonta leaves, of loose tobacco, of actual TOBACCO. It's sweet, a little raisiny. A little vanilla-y, but grounded. The plant is there. Maybe a little sticky, but not in a syrupy way.

I looked for a long time for a fragrance that reminded me of fresh tobacco, in a bag. A full leaf of the tobacco plant. The sweetness of slightly vanilla flavored fonta leaves.

This is her. You know how when you can smell your own scent and blood and musk through a fragrance? Bo never covers me, she just enhances me. If you are a spicy woody babe, you'll like her. I was raised by smokers, maybe it's part of loving this fragrance. But it's the good parts of tobacco, of good but old furniture. Of the sweetness of a grandma's kitchen, as she secretly smokes out the side door.

Gorgeous sauna cedar

Cedar wood with a touch of vanilla and tobacco, it smells to me exactly like a luxe sauna beside a cabin in a cool dry forest. It’s a very serene, quiet scent, resinous, extremely beautiful. The longevity is great, especially for Liis as their scents tend to be on the lighter, more fleeting side. Very modern, as opposed to Tam Dao which has more of an apothecary feel. I absolutely love it
