Xerjoff Modoc: Understated Elegance or Forgettable Blend?
Positive:
Modoc is a refined blend of green notes, citrus, and soft woods — elegant and understated. Many describe it as a sophisticated gentleman’s fragrance, versatile and polished without being loud. A hidden gem in the Xerjoff line.

Negative:
Some find Modoc too safe or forgettable, lacking the bold character expected from Xerjoff. Its subtle nature may feel underwhelming for those seeking uniqueness or strong performance.

Strong and Declarative Greenish Orange Blossom Vetiver
I received a small sample mysteriously labeled only "MO" from MinNY, and because it was in a packet with other XerJoff samples, I figured that it must be from this house. Donning the perfume, I discovered that orange blossom and neroli were undeniably present. From there I deduced that "MO" must be MODOC.

To my nose, MODOC is basically a super strong neroli-orange blossom-vetiver cologne. It smells good, no doubt about that, but I think of neroli-orange blossom-vetiver as a classic cologne composition, not the basis for a fine perfume. Yes, it's a matter of habit and convention, but that's just the way it is. I do not think that this particular creation smacks unmistakably of 4711, which was my major criticism of Tom Ford NEROLI PORTOFINO, making it seem a ridiculous way to spend $200, if you ask me.

MODOC, in contrast, offers a potent dose of vetiver along with an equally strong neroli-orange blossom facet tinged by some greenishness--apparently imparted by tarragon, though I would not have identified it as such without prompting. I actually think that there is more vetiver than orange blossom/neroli in this creation, but there is really no getting around the neroli, which leads me to conclude that MODOC may not be the best investment for precious XerJoff funds, I mean, assuming that one has a budget of some sort. If the sky is the limit, why not?

Edible Purple Chalk from Iris
And again a scent from the brand that people say copies so much, overprices, and dares little on its own, which at least I can’t compare to anything else after testing 1500 fragrances. Far from a classic iris scent, where even iris experts will take a while to notice the popular flower at all.

I would describe the scent as follows: a piece of iris chalk to suck on, with a continuous increase in my enthusiasm throughout the fragrance. The beginning is indefinable, though not terrible. Rather unclassifiable and a bit wild. Powdery citrus hints are always a tricky thing. Then you slowly realize, rather than quickly, where this powderiness comes from: it’s an extravagant iris scent. Even though I never really recognize the vetiver, I can only praise the unusual combination of two of my favorite fragrance ingredients. Strange why this hasn’t been combined more often. The vetiver grounds the sweet iris at the end and provides in the dry down what otherwise carrot seeds or similar notes do in other vegetable iris scents in the top note. That the scent fits perfectly for men in suits or on more upscale dates doesn’t need to be emphasized.

Bottle: from cap to glass - top notch!
Sillage: too much for a teacher, too little for a dancer.
Longevity: top rating at 12-15 hours.

An outstanding, strange, polarizing, chalky-dusty, and totally different interpretation of iris... keep it up, Xerjoff, and here Modoc is definitely underrepresented! I like it, for example, more than Uden. So iris fans: get to the comment boards!

With the Fliwatüt to Takatukaland
There, where Lukas, the train driver, lets the robber Hotzenplotz ride along without a Bahncard and John-Boy receives an orange and a goodnight kiss from Snow White in the evening. There, where the fire-red play vehicle is fully fueled with vetiver and the exhaust is made from a vanilla pod.
There, where Troubadix finally buys himself a proper spice mix from Maggi and Fozzie Bear doesn’t always get himself covered in honey.
There, where Scrooge McDuck shares his millions with me.

That’s where I want to go!

Beautiful and almost unknown. Similarities to Cathusia 1681, but less herbaceous and more focus on fresh iris.

Spicy beginning with citruses is soon replaced by a combination of iris and vetiver, which give - along with vanilla - a warm body touch.

I'm sorry, but it smells like someone vomited carrot salad. Yuck, extremely unnecessary in the Discovery Collection.

Woody, green, floral. Above all, sweet, powdery, synthetic & creamy. Lots of sandalwood. Like the girl’s version from the drugstore of Tam Dao.

After a citrus-herb opening, dry powdery iris, like soft, new leather. Gentle vetiver + patch ground it. In the dry down, woody. Unisex + nice.

It goes across the herb garden, the delicate iris and rose are beaten down by grasses and spices. Why can't you love each other?

Iris, vetiver, patchouli, pine, vanilla, spice. Everything is there, but nothing dominates. Most likely the spice. I don’t find it uneven.
