Masterful Forest

A truly sublime opening on first spray, like standing on the dry pine needle covered floor of a forest east of the rocky mountains in the summer and the heat from the sun strikes the beads of golden sap trickling down the side of a tree onto the bark. It settles quickly from there and the flowers start to rise up out of this arboreal first impression. And then the spice, the cardamom, a bit like crushing a green pod in your hand. What I love about this composition is that, much like Kerosene's fragrances, this smells like real things from the real world layered on top of one another to paint an olfactory image. But unlike Kerosene the inspiration here is clearly nature and being with nature, rather than the human-built environment and the cultural productions of our activity. This is fragrance as the plant world would design it, and I love it. Masterful work.

Barely perceptible spicy smokiness

Might be one of the few perfumes for which I have anosmia. This first review of 2025 might be the shortest I'll ever have written since I barely smell anything. The only notes I'm getting is cardamom and immortelle. I get a spicy smokiness and the honeyed facet of immortelle I've come to recognize in other perfumes. Base notes seem to exhale a weird resinous, almost plasticky, candle-like scent that is off-putting.

There's not much more for me to say. Other people seem to love this perfume and detect its notes, so I'm sure this is a "me" problem. Oh well, another save for my wallet!

Sticky, Sweet Spices

Most perfumes, I feel, sit on top of skin. The warmth of the body helps project the notes, but the fragrance doesn't truly interact your skin in the same way I found Gilded does; like blooming coffee with hot water first, it mingles and brings out the spicy sweetness of the fragrance.

Gilded feels like you're blooming spices with the heat of your skin. The spiciness of ginger, the warmth of cinnamon and coziness of cardamom... I'm pretty convinced I can pick up the vaguest whispers of cumin, making this smell like a 'body' scent while still making a scent bubble around you.

Then, there's the sweetness of the brown sugar. You really get the impression of a molasses-y, sticky sugar as opposed to just a linear sweetness. There's depth and warmth to it, and it's almost like it clings to the inside of your nose. This becomes the most dominant note, to the point where it begins to overwhelm everything else the longer you wear it.

Longevity is very mid, 2-3 hours until it becomes a very faint skin scent.

Overall, this perfume has a wonderful depth to it. It's complex but very sweet, perfect for the colder months where the 'stickiness' of it doesn't become weighty. Unfortunately, the sweetness wasn't much to my personal tastes, but it is pleasant to sample.
