Nobody does it better ... or do they?
Some months ago I loudly voiced my displeasure at the lack of selection presented on the Mugler counter at an upscale department store here in South Africa. Visibly terrified by my haranguing, the SA told me that there would soon be new stock ... and fled on his tea break.

I was in the store today and as he spotted me a beatific smile lit up his face and he bolted at me clutching two testers. Proudly he gabbled that the 'Miroir' collection was now in stock and please would I follow him to the counter to sample his new delights ... I acquiesced. Upon arrival there I had to have a good giggle ... the bean counters (in their wisdom) have only approved two (this one and des Majestes) of the seven but I bit my tongue as he was trying extremely hard to impress this incredibly hard sell of a parfumista.
Miroir des Voluptés caught my attention because it is an Oud/Rose combination. There's a lovely Sandalwood here as well as a delicate African Orange Blossom in the top. There's also a lovely caramel like amber here, which was enchanting while it lasted.
When the Oud takes over, Voluptés becomes relatively linear, not very exiting at all I'm afraid. For my money, the Rose/Oud combinations over at Montale are vastly superior ... I even have a few attars which smell similar and can be had for a lot less.
I am pleased, however, that a fragrance such as this has made it's way to the marketplace in SA. It will hopefully be a worthwhile educational experience for fragrance lovers here.

Je suis trés désolé Thierry ... there are better on offer than this.

Woody Oud - Fragrance
In the "Wish for a Comment" thread, there was a request for descriptions of all Miroir fragrances, starting with Miroir des Voluptes.
Well, I’m not finished with the "The Perfume Coffret" series yet, but I will get to that (I don’t write that many comments).

Now that my two-week cold is finally over, I wanted to tackle the first of the Miroir fragrances, which is actually the sixth in the series:

Miroir des Voluptes (MdV)

In my opinion, MdV is the most pleasing of the series, which was released a whole year later than the first five.

MdV starts wonderfully soft, rosy, woody, with a nice portion of amber.
A soft, vanillic amber, but not cloyingly sweet or sticky, rather very elegant and smooth.

I perceive the rose distinctly, but not overpoweringly, along with a few other flowers that I unfortunately cannot identify.

I can also smell the oud already. Woody, dark, but subtly in the background.

The fragrance is quite strong, like everything from Mugler, but it is completely atypical for a Mugler.
I don’t think anyone would recognize it as such; the target audience is quite different.

After about 30 to 45 minutes, the heart note starts for me, becoming a bit smokier, the oud comes out more (but again, not too much, fortunately, I don’t like it when oud is too prominent), the rose remains present but becomes darker and heavier, more mystical.

Another 2 hours later, the base begins, and the fragrance develops into an oriental blockbuster:

Finest amber, beautifully dark-sweet (it was sweeter in the top note, but the progression is great), patchouli, spices, vanilla or tonka (which then brings in more sweetness, but not through the amber) and woods.
I can’t say exactly what I’m smelling; it reminds me in parts of some things I know from Serge Lutens, but MdV is more pleasing, at least for me.

I would describe it as a typical new-oriental dark, deep fragrance, and it was made for exactly this target group:

While the first 5 Miroir fragrances are already extremely hard to find (only 20 perfumeries in Germany carry them), MdV is not available at all in Europe.

For a short time, it was available in France and in the French Mugler online store, but it’s gone from there too. (and they didn’t ship to Germany)

Instead, the market is entirely focused on Dubai or the United Arab Emirates.
By now, it can only be purchased there (as it was designed for this market) and it seems to be successful: Still this year, the second oud fragrance of the Miroir series will be released, specifically for this market and only there.

Conclusion: Miroir des Voluptes is great!
A dark-sweet oriental oud blockbuster, with a hefty portion of amber and finest rose.
Wearable for special occasions, long-lasting, economical (it has to be at this price).
I like it, and it is definitely more wearable than the first 5 of the series!

Orient greets you
- fitting for Dubai (that’s where I bought it)

It reminds me a lot of the Serge Lutens fragrances, which are definitely not in the European style!

Typical - Bulgarian rose, honey sweet amber, and orange blossom. As a special feature, the super expensive agarwood (oud) - no idea how this is supposed to smell...
A truly sensual woody oriental fragrance.

This scent also stands out significantly from the 5 predecessors.

Typical Mugler - you either love this fragrance or you hate it!

Sure exquisite on others, but too woody-herb for me! Reminds me almost of a strongly hopped Pils! Sorry for the comparison!

A wonderful honey tobacco scent with delicate fluttering rose and pleasant soapiness. Clean, delicious, lovely, oriental, intense, and good :)

The deep dark rose at first gets a late tobacco accompaniment.
In the base, there's patchouli-spiced sandalwood.
