The snake-oil note

First of all, I write these blogs for fun. Not to bash anyone or anything. Just to have some conversation. My nose isn't your nose and I'm well aware that my nose is a bit broken sometimes heh heh. What I wanted to talk about are the perfumes of Escentric Molecules. They're around for some time now but only recently have I discovered that they're getting a very positive covering on the socials. I've received 01 to 05 now from a friend and I've tested most of them.

The ritual goes like this. Spray it on. Smell nothing. But you're supposed to smell something alluring, something sexy. Or no, not really smell it. Rather "experience" it. It has so many purposes too. You can boost your regular fragrances, you can round them where-ever they're too sharp. But always under the radar. It reminds me of something.

You see, I have an other great hobby. I consider myself an audiophile. In this hobby, people splash out real big bucks for tiny enhancements in their audio equipment. Sometimes they do make a difference, but sometimes it's all in the head. A fun example of this, are certain types of salty rocks that you can place on your equipment, just so they slurp up all of the radiation that's in your house. If you believe in it, then you really can hear the difference even if science says something else.

Anyway, we have a word for that: snake-oil. I'm really beginning to wonder if that's also a thing in perfume-land. Do you know the fragrances of Escentric Molecules? What do they do for you? Hypothetically, can they just boost your self-confidence, and make you sexy just because of that? I really appreciate what the perfumers are doing here, to make you think and to make you experiment. What are your thoughts on this? Please discuss.

All I know is selling ISO-E Super mixed with perfumer's alcohol for $160 is highway robbery. I can buy a kg of ISO E for $70 and a kg of perfumer's alcohol for $30. Assuming 50% concentration (it's probably closer to 20%), that's $100 for 20 100ml bottles, or $5 a bottle. And this is not even bulk/wholesale prices.

Great blog post and illustrations, @Ceesie ! I was wondering about the Escentric Molecules enhancers as well. I've hesitated to purchase any because of what seems to be quite expensive prices. I recently found a more economical source which, unfortuately, only ships to the USA and Canada. Molecule 01 is supposedly only ISO E Super as an EdT. In the US, it goes for about $160 for 100ml. The other brand is OakCityBeard Company. They sell 100 ml of ISO E Super in EdP concentration for $34 and in Extrait de Parfum for $38. They also have 100 ml of "Boost" Extrait de Parfum for $37. Boost contains ISO E Super, Ambroxan and Javanol. 3ml samples of all of these are available. I'm curious to see what other's experience is.

Now those are honest prices that won’t break the bank. Indeed 160€ for something that is basically a base ingredient… is steep.
