Where are all the compliments?

“Oh yeah this fragrance will give you compliments!” is a much-heard phrase when reading reviews or watching about them on YouTube. Well who doesn’t want that, right? Believe it or not but my experience is a lot different. I’ll give you a rare insight into my thoughts of one single day.

A brand new day, a brand new spray! I have a new beast mode perfume so finally I can test it out at work. Spray a little spray, don’t forget to mention it on my favorite website and there I walk out the door. Let the avalanche of compliments begin! On the trip commuting to work the braingasms start. Man this smells amazing!

“Hi colleagues!” Nothing, no compliments. That’s alright. It’s a big room so they probably don’t smell me. I’ll move a little closer, maybe that will cheer them up. Hmm why the strange face? Maybe he’s had a bad night sleep. Ah well I have a meeting later in a tiny conference room, I’ll catch a compliment there I’m sure. Why is everyone opening windows? Wait! This way you still can’t smell my fragrance! Boy that’s just my luck. Conference is over, back to work.

Oh no there’s that pompous colleague who’s always late. Oh my gosh what the heck is he wearing? Oud? Man he’s choking everyone out! I’ll talk with him.

A few moments later I’m standing at his desk, saying: “wowzer that’s one nice cologne you’re wearing, what brand is it?”

@Ceesie your article was good fun to me. In France as previously said people do not make compliments about perfumes. I am Greek and wr do not do this either..We would ask the person very politely if they want to tell us what they are wearing. Maybe. I am trying to think of a place they do that . Make a compliment. Country or places. Perhaps front desk stuff of a boutique hotel. Perhaps venue event organisers. Definitely beauty parlours, hair saloons. London, Camden town . California.

I laughed out loud at this post, great humor @Ceesie ! 😂
I try to be conscientious of not choking anyone out; I have a fairly sensitive nose, so I don't spray very much when wearing anything regardless.
Unfortunately never received an "avalanche of compliments" like you mentioned haha, but the one I've received the most compliments on is Victoria's Secret Pink "Sweet Fig". It's a really lovely musky fig, creamy coconut, and honey blend!
What is your #1 compliment-getter fragrance?

Thanks @Gourmandgrl it was fun writing this :-)
I was writing my frustration away with this blog as I don’t really get a lot of compliments on my perfume. Only Terre d’Hermes and Ombre Noire got me someone to tell me I smelled nice… my wife and my mother in law :-( Sad story I know.

I am French, I don't compliment strangers, instead I stare at them... Trying to guess the name of their perfume.

I think compliments are very much dependent on where you live and how open people are speaking to strangers. I won’t say I receive them daily/often, but I do get people commenting on my perfume. Now, it could well be the example you used of choking people out but they decide to be nice about it - I hope that’s not my case; but I’ve heard several strangers tell me that I smell lovely, and even ask for the name of the perfume.
I am not shy complimenting strangers either, not just on their perfume, but nails, clothing etc. It is acceptable where I am from. As for being chased down the stress, I always take that with caution. I wasn’t chased but a woman stopped me in Istanbul to ask what fragrance I was wearing and to write it down for her. Also happened in Malta! Only twice in my entire life. The perfume was Sintra! I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, it does but it is also rare.

Thanks for commenting @CallMeTee I’ll have to look up that Sintra hehe.
Great to have such open people. I think you’re right about it being about demographics too. I’m doing my best to also be open about giving compliments. I think it’s really important to “leave behind smiles” nowadays.

I always give women compliments if they are wearing something with more imagination than BR540.
Sadly it is a bit different for us guys, we mostly get compliments from other guys.
Either that or from 40+ years old women, not that I am complaining. I actually love it because they know what they like so they give sincere and unique compliments.

Oh yes, compliments from strangers. My favorite fragrance myth that basically turns the whole fragrance youtube into a huge joke.
I work at a store and it happens maybe a handful of times a year. Hundreds of strangers each workday. Sure, they look at you differently, treat you with more respect, maybe crack a smile.
I guess that counts as a compliment, to an extent. But actually breaking the social barrier and saying it out loud? You wish.
Perhaps the reviewers mean compliments from their friends. Suddenly, I remember "Strangers chasing me down the aisle asking me what I'm wearing." Nevermind.
It's better with colleagues, they gradually get used to your antics, since they don't have a choice. A whiff of Amouage a day keeps the doctor away.

"A whiff of Amouage a day keeps the doctor away." best quote ever!

Lol yeah I heard that one too, the stranger chasing you down!
Anyway, even with friends and family the compliments don’t come that often. But I don’t mind. No compliments, but also no complaints.
