Gossamer Cream
L’AMOUR by Lalique

Extremely elegant white floral on my skin. Clean clear neroli with tuberose and non-indolic jasmine. Very floral, but not soapy. Beautiful melange of rose/bergamot/gardenia support on a base of creamy sandalwood/cedar and smooth delicate musk weaving through all. A sensually exquisite skin scent that I absolutely love sniffing away at through the day.

No detergent harshness or poorly blended sourness in the citrus. The citrics here bolster the freshness of the white florals and counter any tendency to cloying over-sweetness. The sandalwood is balmy and well balanced here without tipping into full on woody darkness, allowing this blend to remain securely floral, yet with a delicate woody complexity within. Fine, clean cedar accord adds a gently sober profundity, yet without any clumsy overdone heaviness. The musk here is a moderate weight anchoring dry-down that is just luscious enough to keep this composition from becoming a choice for me in really hot summer weather.

With my chemistry, this is a perfect Autumn scent for chilly mornings and evenings. I can easily see why this was released in January during the cold weather. For me this is warm, sensual, elegant, understated, discreet, exquisitely blended, and smooth as a finely woven and delicate creamy cashmere sweater. It’s gorgeous! I love it. It’s one of my favorites already!

Thank you again to the House of Lalique for bringing us another gracefully refined beauty!

Pristine Rainforest in a Bottle
MARC JACOBS WOMAN-EDP, by Marc Jacobs

Opens as a ravishingly gorgeous aquatic-white-floral with citric bergamot flourishes.

Develops into a headily-sweet, creamy-fresh, cool-dewy, crisp-green and pristinely beautiful non-indolic jasmine/honeysuckle accord. Everything is swirled through and through with delicately spiced peppery-ginger which provides a touch of exquisite piquant complexity and depth to the intoxicatingly heady white floral “gardenia” core.

On my skin this perfume is a perfect balance between the cold-dewy-green-freshness of the jasmine/honeysuckle accords and the zesty-dry-warm-spiciness of the peppery ginger accord in tandem with the tender cedarwood base. The enchanting tropical green vegetation melds seamlessly into the sultry-sweet florals, and remains consistent throughout the development. This is without question one of the most ravishingly beautiful rainforest-fresh-florals I have ever tested on my skin. A clean and unobtrusively elegant and smooth cedar dry down, with the barest hint of an anchoring white musk finishes this blissful olfactory experience.

With this scent, visions abound of pristine tropical vegetation and the most stunningly exotic dewy fresh-flora imaginable. Brings to mind dreamlike images of Moorea Island and peaks in Tahiti. And perhaps most of all, Kauai, The Garden Island, maybe the most beautiful of all the islands of Hawaii, with high-plunging white ribboned waterfalls cascading over lush-green misty-rainforest mountain canyons.

Never too sweet, never cloying. Never sour or bitter. No harsh edges. Everything blended to seamless, silken-smooth perfection. No overdone heaviness in the base to sully or detract from the perfection of the celestial white floral mélange. This is stunningly beautiful to me, and on me.

Thank you forever from the bottom of my heart to Steve Demercado and Loc Dong.

Down to Earth Elegance
PARFUM DE THERESE by Frederic Malle

Dazzlingly Beautiful. This is a Spicy-Fruity-Chypre-Aquatic. I have never smelled anything quite like it.

This a profoundly beautiful composition of byzantine complexity and magnificence on me. Therese Roudnitska and I must have similar chemistry, because I get a huge positive development that blooms from every single accord in this creation on my skin.

Opens with decadently rich blast of fruity fresh mandarins, sweet jasmine, and dewy-aquatic melon laden extravagantly with a generous dusting of spicy pepper and more nutmeg than I have ever smelled in a fruity feminine perfume. Juicy ripe plums and honeydew melons swirl around a shower of plush rose petals and soft violets. Everything then settles securely on the opulent base of clean woody cedar, delicately restrained leather, and herbaceous vetiver.

I worried initially about the leather because my skin generally magnifies animalics to an unpleasant degree. However the leather here is blended so seamlessly that it functions to absolute perfection as a buttery smooth and sensually refined anchor on me. I can easily smell why there was no need to throw in a cheap musk or a heavier wood here, and yet still maintain a lusciously decadent dry-down. This fine and delicate leather envelops the earthy vetiver and aromatic cedar to achieve an intensely sumptuous velvety finishing base that melds impeccably with skin.

The exquisitely powerful peppery-dry-nutmeg combo offsets the dewy-aquatic sweetness of the melons and jasmine, while also brilliantly restraining the darkly rich violet/rose here. This never tips into heady floral land due to the generous addition of the dry spice in the mix. It remains firmly as a splendidly joyous and powerfully earthy fruity-chypre with the sensuality of the entire composition emphasized by the addition of that dewy aquatic jasmine/melon accord.

I find this perfume to be extravagantly elegant and exuberantly down to earth at the same time. I visualize a strong and grounded woman with a refined sense of beauty who exults in the happiness of family and good friends. A woman who loves deeply and is loved as such in return. A woman comfortable and secure in her own skin. A woman who is not afraid of life and lives it to the fullest.

This is what I feel that Therese and Edmond Roudnitska share with us. Profoundly feminine. Gloriously beautiful. Magnificent.

Voluptuous Rose Magnificence
UNE ROSE by Frederic Malle

This is Astonishingly Gorgeous! Shamelessly carnal yet haughtily elegant! Magnificent! Opens with a potent blast of sun warmed, fully blooming mass of dark crimson rose petals, geranium, and rose geranium blossoms soaked in finely aged burgundy wine. The loamy-rich-cool-damp-fertile-topsoil scent of the earthy animalic vetiver/patchouli/castoreum accord meshes deftly with IsoE Super musk + dry-woody Karanal-type amber to form a unique olfactory dichotomy with the warm-herby-honeyed chamomile + the powerfully fresh, astringently-bracing pelargonium/geranium flowers blossoms soaking in fruity-oak-barrel aged burgundy wine.

The opulent rich and oily Turkish Rose absolute accord is suspended between this brilliant scent contradiction with the result being that all aspects of rose, from the fresh lemony-spicy-green rosehip buds to the fully blooming voluptuous petals warming in the summer sun, are fully realized and amplified to maximum olfactory glory here. This is elegantly sweetened only by that which is naturally occurring within honeyed chamomile and flowers. No extraneous added sugar exists here.

This perfume composition fills the nasal cavities like someone’s ears would be filled with the depth and complexity of hearing Beethoven’s 9th symphony live with full orchestra and chorus blasting away on a hyper-amplified sound system of a rock concert sitting in front row seats. This scent is absolutely fascinating. Visually this brings to mind the Dark Elf Queen reclining in her forest boudoir, sipping a finely aged burgundy wine on a warm, moonlit Midsummer’s Night.

The scent is not a linear or a traditional pyramid construction. This composition is brilliantly Spiral on me with the vivid push/pull between the animalically voluptuous accords and the freshly vegetal notes continuing persistently throughout the long life of this scent on the skin, both of the antagonists constantly orbiting the Rose which occupies center stage at all times. It is tremendously lively throughout development in the way the various accords dance with each other, and also against each other on the skin. In the universe of perfume, this composition is a very special and gloriously beautiful little solar system.

Skin testing is absolutely required for this one because the combination of crudely vulgar animalic and the celestially refined vegetal could easily skew too much in either direction depending on chemistry. For me on my skin, this sits squarely in the middle and I am madly in love with another divine rose masterpiece. Standing ovation and deafening applause to Edouard Flechier.

Rose Sublime
EAU ROSE by Diptyque

Breathtakingly beautiful Rose. Opens with a rush of bittersweet bergamot and juicy tart vine-ripe black currants followed immediately with a saturating flood of soft, tropical, delicately sweet litchi fruit. A pristinely fresh and glorious rose makes her entrance among the sparkling lemony threads of dewy-green geranium, which provides a zesty citric strength and additional support to the principal rose scent itself.

A subdued non-indolic jasmine woven throughout provides an extra touch of sweetly refined floral complexity without intruding on the precedence of the roses. A warm, clean cedar houses the entire creation beautifully, while a cozy white musk adds a delicate hint of tender sensuality. A fascinatingly delectable drop of honey infuses just a trace of voluptuously natural silken sweetness with complexity and depth.

The Rose here is poised gracefully between the refreshing cool vivid clarity of the Black Currant/Geranium, and the sumptuously smooth warm sweetness of the Litchi/Jasmine. The perfect balance achieved here between the pull of these four exceptionally contrasting elements, both of which are supportive of the Rose, yet diametrically opposed to each other, is what makes this composition a unique masterpiece. It is both simple and extremely refined. The myriad of subtle, elegant nuances woven within and throughout the strands of this scent tapestry succeed brilliantly.

This is exquisitely beautiful. Perhaps the most beautiful rose I have ever smelled on my skin. Sublime beauty personified in scent. I love this one completely and utterly.
