The Raw Beauty of the Tonka Bean: "Tonka Kumaru" by Atelier Materi

With "Tonka Kumaru," the French label Atelier Materi presents a new unisex creation that aims to reveal the complex, almond-like signature of the tonka bean in all its depth.

Tonka Kumaru is a modern tribute to an extraordinary raw material, in which each note is designed to reveal and enhance the full richness and complexity of the tonka bean.

The opening notes are dominated by bitter almond and the citrus freshness of bergamot, complemented by the subtle spice of cardamom. At the heart, South African roasted barley and hay absolute deepen the dry, warm depth of the composition. Cedar leaves add a green, slightly woody facet that lends the fragrance additional precision. The base notes focus on roasted tonka bean. Vanilla resinoid highlights its gourmand, milky aspects, while amber and musk provide a soft warmth.

With Tonka Kumaru, I wanted to reveal the raw beauty of the tonka bean and highlight its almond-like notes, which are delicious and soothing and immediately remind me of the Cléopâtre glue from my childhood, that iconic little pot known to generations of French schoolchildren, and its mischievous temptation to taste it.Véronique Le Bihan

About Atelier Materi

The label was founded by Véronique Le Bihan, who also shapes the design line as creative director. Atelier Materi sees itself as a representative of a "slow luxury" philosophy: it offers small, carefully curated collections, selected and responsibly sourced raw materials, and close collaboration with artisans throughout the entire value chain—from harvesting the ingredients to the bottle and packaging.

The name "Atelier Materi" refers to the material itself. Each composition revolves around a single, modernly interpreted raw material. The focus is on the respective "material", while the rest of the structure is kept minimal in order to emphasize the central ingredient.
