Two Facets of Lavender: “Metal Lavender” by Matière Première
With the unisex fragrance “Metal Lavender” places Matière Première lavender at the center: fresh, slightly metallic, and imbued with the floral depth of Haute-Provence.
The idea for METAL LAVENDER came to me while I was spending time at the distilleries in Provence. I was deeply impressed by that almost brutalist setting of concrete and metal—the light, the spatial layout, the sounds.
Aurélien Guichard, founder of Matière Première
The composition of “Metal Lavender” blends two distinct lavender notes: a bold, slightly metallic lavandin from Grasse and a soft, floral organic lavender from Haute-Provence. While cashmeran lends the aromatic freshness a warm, woody, spicy depth, white musk provides a soft, powdery finish.

The fragrance was created by French perfumer Aurélien Guichard, founder of the house Matière Première. As a scion of a long-established dynasty from Grasse, he is carrying on his family’s legacy into its seventh generation. While he contributes his expertise at Takasago, he realizes his personal vision through his own label. The name—which translates to “raw material”—embodies the philosophy: rather than relying on complex compositions, Guichard focuses on a single key ingredient.
Many of the ingredients used, such as rose and tuberose, are organically grown on the brand’s own fields in Grasse. This commitment to quality is also reflected in the formulas: the fragrances are highly concentrated, vegan, and free of phthalates and synthetic dyes.
The new fragrance is available in 6, 50, and 100 ml sizes.
