Two masterpieces.

Two masterpieces.

1. DIOR Fahrenheit. 1988. This fragrance is a Goth fragrance for men just like the first Poison edt DIOR for women was also a goth DIOR. I would gladly wear both because in Italy the perfumery that started in the 15th century did not differenciate perfumes according to sex of the wearer! Back to Fahrenheit: this has been loved and adored as much as loathed.  You see its creators Jean Louis Sieuzac & Maurice Roger & Michel Almarac decided the fragrance to contain synthetics in the base of the aromatic pyramid you would find Iso E super and a floral synthetic called Lyral . That brought a controversial effect to the perfume lovers of the time and split them in two groups the lovers and the loathers of the fragrance. Of course experienced marketing people know very well that if a product is word of mouth, even bad word of mouth is the best advertising for it! I never had this fragrance for me but at a friend's home who owned a recording studio I had to use the bathroom and found a bottle of it on the self at the base of the mirror over the basin. I took the lid off and sprayed once on my left wrist . The odeur stayed there for two days and I must say it was woodsy deep, floral but dark with a lot of violet and orris root butter. How can I put it in words? I was too young, too inexperienced for this Goth. He stayed bossy and cold blooded but at the same time because of the lack of sweetness he was very attractive! Remained a stranger all the way through never got intimate ,but his appeal was very strong. Top notes: Bergamot, mandarin, lemon, chamomile, hawthorn. Middle notes: honeysuckle, lavender, nutmeg, cedar, jasmin, carnation, lilly of the valley, violet leaves, lentish, sandalwood.Base notes: amber, leather, patchouli, vetiver, musk, tonka beans, benzoin, Iso E super, lyral.

2. Kenzo pour homme edt 1991 the initial formula combined a classic floral woodsy gourmand fougere with ozonic sea air and sea algae notes (seaweed). It was a very modern child of artisan perfumery very beautifully operated by Christian Mathieu. The bottle was also exquisite as an artifact,it looked like a sculpted trunk of a bamboo cane on dark green glass. I adored this secretly when it came out. The reason was the popularity.  Certain entertainment venues were soaked of the refreshing odor of this woodsy wonder. So it was a no no for me. I preferred wearing something Goth like Jacomo by Jacomo instead of the brand new fresh juice of Kenzo pour homme. Let's look at the notes of the fragrance in a different perspective. the fresh notes: bergamot, lemon, sage, sea notes, juniper berries (for the effect of ice). the fruit notes: white flesh peach. the flowers: carnation, lilly of the valley (loats), rose, musk and jasmin. the spices: nutmeg and cumin. the woods and resins: mahogany, pine, ,orris root (root butter from iris),fir balm, sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, oak moss, labdanum and amber. This fragrance was a trip from the northern Atlantic to the Mediterranean forests and from there to middle East and India.

I'm a big fan of Fahrenheit but have only experienced the current version which is supposed to be a shadow of what it was. (I have never smelled vintage Fahrenheit.) And yes, that is quite an artistic bottle for the Kenzo, another one I've never tried.

@Smirky you are right, the first of the eleven Fahrenheit flankers was unbeatable. kenzo pour homme 1991 was everywhere when it was launched.

@Tzapan the bottle in the bottom photo is very beautiful, the dark green-blue shading almost makes it look like some type of dark "seaglass" you'd find along the coast!

@Gourmandgrl you are right, the brand changed it though later on, it was too expensive. I guess. Thank you for your good aesthetics. I always say you cannot teach aesthetics, one is born with it or not

I have never smelled Kenzo pour homme, I will have to try it out. Your memory of secretly loving it is amazing – I think a lot of people, myself included, can relate to this!!

@Longevity thank you for the comment! When a fragrance gets too popular too fast we react like this.
