Hi,
I recently received a set of fragrances from Mission Fragrances as a gift, and I was trying to add them to the database. I got an error stating that fragrances from this brand were not being allowed into the database. I'm curious what the reason for this is. Does anyone know?
Mission Fragrances
If I had to guess, it's because they're a scam company that sells clones of popular frags with a "performance enhancing" snake oil pitch.

I guess it's a similar case with Maison Alhambra's perfumes

Here is the list of the "forbidden brands" :
Thanks. I know it's on the list. I'm just curious as to WHY it's on the list. If it's the marketing, I get it, but they seem pretty legit as far as the fragrance is concerned. I don't see them advertising as a clone, and the price point doesn't put it in clone territory. And there's plenty of other brands on here that advertise similar properties. I'm just a bit of an OCD completionist, so it bugs me to not be able to put something into a database like this.
As perfume houses and perfumers have faithfully copied eachother's work since forever - only Cthulhu knows for how long -, one does wonder: what sense does it make, MMXXV Anno Satani, to ban a specific house? Just my two Miskatonic cents.

The conversation regarding dupes overall is probably best had in another topic, but in this particular case I feel like whether these perfumes are direct copies or just "intentionally inspired by the DNA of some of the top fragrances in the world", like the company claims in their response to a negative review on TrustPilot – is secondary to the fact that they're a scam.
At the moment conversation regarding this brand on the internet is very limited and heavily curated. Savvy owner even made a preemptive "are these perfumes a scam" article on his main website (Real Men Real Style), where he reassures that "nooooo, of course not, trust me bro, they've done their research". I was curious, so I went ahead and found the buried research page on the Mission Fragrances website.
Expectedly, it had a long list of article links owner Antonio Centeno expects his ideal consumer not to bother checking further – with trusted scientific sources like lifehack and brainfacts; a workspace setups centered internet magazine Maker Stations; several different articles on his own main website (yeah, the "Real Men Real Style" one); and, of course, two different general overviews of "what's an olfactory system" from sciencedirect and britannica.
So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Antonio Centeno himself requested to not be included in open perfume databases so that his Performance Enhancing Colognes® could avoid negative publicity for as long as possible while he swindles gullible people out of their money with promises of "activating their olfactory system" and "hacking their brain's neurological pathways and thus helping them achieve their goals through smell".

Not sure if this is relevant for the particular brand you're trying to submit, but saw updated guidance given about dupe brand submissions (on this forum thread):
We recently updated our guidelines for accepting dupes, inspired by, and hybrid perfumes. ... Dupes are now allowed if they have a unique name (no number-only catalogues), don’t copy the original's name or design and avoid using protected brand names or logos. Brands may refer to the original with terms like "inspired by..." or "our version of...", but they cannot claim identical scent replication.
The key rule is that if a dupe could be mistaken for the original, it will not be accepted. If you believe your previously rejected submissions now meet these criteria, feel free to resubmit them. 😉
The new guideline regarding dupes can be found here:

That said, not all brands currently on the banned list will be unbanned at the same time.
For one, not every brand is on the list because of dupe-related concerns. For another, the expected flood of new submissions would simply overwhelm us.
Dupebrands are therefore only assessed one by one and re-evaluated if necessary but not all at once.
Regarding Mission Fragrance: the situation remains as previously stated. It is as Ursaw said: The provider is highly questionable, if not outright dubious, so the brand will remain on the banned list.
Thank you, Aspasia. That is very helpful. I'm glad that the dupe list has been updated, and I understand about the other issues. I appreciate everyone else's helpful comments as well. Thank you again!
