Goutal Heure Exquise versus Chanel 19? 0

Hi, hope anyone can tell me a bit more about the differences between N°19 Eau de Parfum and Heure Exquise They are being compared often.

I have Chanel 19 and love it but I would like it a bit more feminine/romantic maybe without it being too opulent or 80's style.

Would Heure exquise be something I might like then?

I own a full bottle of Heure Exquise and a tiny decant of N°19 Eau de Parfum and I just applied them simultaneously for you, so you don’t have to. 😀 Both are older batches (I bought my bottle in 2019, I guess).

They are definitely in the same vein and similar enough, so I think it would be redundant to own both.

Now to the differences. Knowing the House of Goutal, one would expect Heure Exquise to be a lighter version of No. 19, but surprisingly it’s not. Actually, the Goutal one is heavier on galbanum, which makes it quite bitter, in the best way possible. It beats me why on earth Parfumo doesn’t list the galbanum note for Heure Exquise.

I find the iris to be a bit more distinguishable in N°19 Eau de Parfum , while the hyacinth (a touch animalic) dominates in Heure Exquise . The pleasent bitterness of galbanum is still present in the drydown of Heure Exquise, while the leather note bothers me a bit in No 19.

Both are beautiful and timeless, equally opulent and vintige-y. I still prefer my Goutal, but I don’t think I’m very objective, considering that Goutal is still my favourite perfume house of them all.

I also prefer the Goutal over No.19. The bitterness of Heure Exquise does make it more approachable, whereas No.19 is too fancy britches for me.

Oh thanks @Jomas! that's so sweet of you to spray both perfumes to give me an impression 🥰! And thanks @Raluko111 for your comment🥰!

So Heure Exquise is even more bitter than No19? Oh I don't know then..I love Galbanum but it can become too bitter on my skin..For reference: I love Galbanum the way it is done in Miss Dior Eau de Toilette Originale (very different from the pink colored flankers!) where it is lifted by the carnation maybe and where I sense a slight sweet 'tingle' (don't know how to put it otherwise). I find No 19 quite dry and a bit 'strickt' is Heure Exquise also dry and 'strickt'?

@Ringtale, you're welcome! 😊

Yes, the bitterness is stronger to me in Heure Exquise than in N°19 Eau de Parfum, and the Goutal starts off stronger and darker, with a quite animalic touch.

I find Chanel to be a tad creamier, whereas Heure Exquise is more vegetal. I never thought of any of them as being a dry perfume, now that you mention it, maybe No19 is a bit drier because the iris appears to be kind of paper-y, which is not the case for me in Heure Exquise.

If you feel that No19 is strict, I guess you will feel the same way about the Goutal.

The drydown of Heure Exquise is absolutely beautiful, dispite the persisting bitterness. There is also some sweetness there, I guess there is some vanilla, because I notice the liquid becoming darker as time goes by.

Thanks again @Jomas I think it is risky for me then. For instance: I love the opening of Azurēe (2015) (completely different scent profile but just for reference), but the bitter drydown often spoils it for me, so I'm probably very sensitive to 'bitter'...On the other hand, I don't like very sweet scents either. I guess I should sample first...Smile
