Enigma
I ordered a back up bottle today, the equivalent of building a bunker at the edge of the millennium, I fear world war and pestilence. I'm told there is a movie where Adolf HItler wakes up, bemused, and finds that the bullet that blitzed his brain simply sent him to sleep for 70 years.
He's back, and I imagine the fields of Iris pallida and Rose de Mai as scorched earth. Coco, no angel where the Nazi's were concerned, inspired the perfume that is No 19 and I adore it. As many others vocalise this is my one and only, if I wasn't totally unfaithful to any one perfume.

For a more detailed breakdown of what No 19 is driven by (no aldehydes, no labdanum, little oak moss) see Elena from Perfume Shrine's article. It's a perfume that is driven as much by what it doesn't contain as what it does contain, It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key. It's beautiful, just beautiful, forever and a day, until the 12th of never.

Why folks say this thing cold?
So I'm a 22 year old dude with a fairly vintage preference when it comes to perfumery. I love Bel Ami and Platinum Egoiste a lot. So...in my love search for more chypres that excites me, No 19 came across my radar.
I was a bit concerned at first because I was afraid not being able to pull this off. but I blind bought it anyway.

As I opened the package and sprayed it on myself, my immediate reaction is that this reminds me of No 5 big time. If you smelled No5 EDP and loved it, you will love this one for sure.

However, I find this warmer and creamier than No 5 EDP. Yes, you heard me. I found No 19 warmer.
While in no 5 that sharp Ylangylang punches you and leaves a trail of metallic aldehydes, No 19 becomes so comforting as it settles down.

On my skin, its a haven of hyacinth and sandalwood. And it is EXTREMELY elegant. Something about No5 is a bit vulgar to me, as if the wearer is trying too hard to announce oneself. However, No 19's impression on me is confidence, in the sense that the wearer is a very pleasant person to be around.

CREAMY, yep, I found this not only warm but also creamy. If you ever smelled hyacinth in nature, you will know that it has a green and fresh sharpness to it. That facet of hyacinth is gone here.

Finally,
to men who are watching:
This is less sweet than Dior Homme OG edt and Dior Homme Intense and more floral and natural smelling, and if you appreciate chypres you would not regret buying and studying this.
To ladies who are watching:
You might be concerned that you find various dudes writing a review here for a perfume marketed to female, you might be wondering if this thing is too masculine. NO. As a straight guy, I would be incredibly delighted if my girl wears this. I have to admit that although it is wearable for a guy, it would accentuate femininity indefinitely better. It's just that as a perfume lover, I find it a crime for such a beautiful creation to be only enjoyed by women!!

Powder & Class...
Part 1: No. 19 Eau de Parfum

Chanel No. 19 Eau de Parfum is to me a very "posh" perfume. It's powdery and elegant, and I can imagine the kind of woman who would wear it. Very controlled, very posh, but still young and beautiful. I think some kind of successful woman or rich woman. Personally I really like the Eau de Toilette and I wear it myself (I find the EdT works better on a man's skin). But first let me describe what it smells like.

This perfume has a gorgeous iris/orris root note. It is well known that the type of iris used by Chanel, iris pallida, comes exclusively from a specific field in Grasse (exclusive to Chanel, it previously used to be from Florence, Italy)... and iris butter (made from roots which are dried for at least 3 years) itself is one of the most expensive perfume ingredients on earth, with the best quality (80% purity) costing around £70,000 (or $105,000) per kg. So what you get here is a wonderful iris note. This is an iris note surrounded by rose (also exclusively from Chanels field in Grasse), lilly-of-the-valley, and some green oakmoss and soft sandalwood. I would describe the Eau de Parfum as a "soft" fragrance. Soft but powerful. It smells expensive. The EdT is brighter, greener and more "alive" somehow. This one is very calm and controlled, but very beautiful. If you thought the EdT was too "green" or "sharp", this EdP is more controlled and powdery. In a word, it smells like expensive "perfume". So I would expect a woman who was rich or wealthy to smell like this. But it's a wonderful smell, and iris is definitely one of my favourite notes in perfumery.

Part 2: A tale of two sisters... Chanel No.19 & Jacomo Silences

Now, I want to compare between Chanel No. 19 and Jacomo Silences, as these perfumes are often compared together. Let's first start by saying that No. 19 was first, and so most other "similar" perfumes are descended or "inspired" by that one. But there is something about Silences that I like, which No. 19 doesn't have... and that is an entirely different character and personality. From the start these two are very different. Put it this way, if they were "sisters", then No. 19 (the older sister) would be the wealthy, successful rich woman of society. She has married someone rich, she lives in a nice, expensive house, she hosts dinner parties wearing her perfect black dress and pearl necklace and earrings. She hangs out with rich, wealthy people in society. She has perfect white skin, like a Greek statue, perfect hair, perfect nails. Perfect life. But, she is cold, she is quietly unhappy. She has everything but she feels like she has no control. Like her rich, successful life has been "planned" for her by others. She smiles for guests, and laughs politely, but when she takes off her makeup at night in her mirror, she sometimes wants to cry.

Her younger sister is Silences. This one you could call a "free spirit". She is an artist and was once a beautiful model. She is a painter. She lives in a small, cute house by the river. She goes for a run every morning with her dog. She does not take everything in life too seriously, but she enjoys every minute of her life. She spends most of her time outdoors, in nature. She loves being in nature, running, painting, enjoying the different seasons. She loves who she wants, and she lives each day to the full. Cooking, being artistic, with the dog, out in the woods. She has no regrets in life. She does not have the money that her older sister "acquired" by marrying a rich man. She does not smell so expensive like her older sister, but she has character, and a big heart. She does not want anything more in her life, and she is happy.

To me these are the differences. They are both green, both have an iris note, but this note is unbeatable in the Chanel, and is powdery, floral and smells clean, polished and expensive. The Jacomo smells "greener", like you are in the forest outside, with the smell of herbs and green leaves which the Chanel doesn't have. Basically, if you are an "active" person, or if you have memories of childhood in the countryside, then you will like and enjoy Silences. But if you want to smell the smell of "perfume", or want something "posh" or "expensive", then go for No. 19. Both are great choices. I think the Jacomo is a little more relaxed and carefree, but if you want to impress or are in a very formal situation, then go for the Chanel. Both are masterpieces!

I am only a beginner at this, but...
I got into perfume more seriously about a year ago or so, and I distinctly remember smelling Chanel fragrances and not enjoying them, feeling they were too old fashioned and unexceptional. From time to time, when at my local perfume stores, I would go to the Chanel stand and smell a couple of perfumes, just because I knew that some day they would reveal themselves to me.

It happened two weeks ago, when I smelled no. 5 and thought it was abnormally good and completely outstanding. I was lucky enough to know that 19 was also considered a gem. I did not know what to expect - I remembered hearing it was a bit weird (in an excellent way), but didn't know it was such a green one. I immediately fell in love, and made my first purchase in store. I usually go home and try to find the best deal, but I couldn't help myself this time. I am wearing it today, and just felt compelled to write about it. What a wonderful, mysterious, and unique fragrance.

Beautyful, grounding scent for high sensitive people
I had tested this on a few occasions at home before buying N°19 Eau de Parfum and am now the happy owner of my first Chanel. (Yes, very late for the party :-))
I don't like most Chanels except for N°5 L'Eau Eau de Toilette (but find that too faint unfortunately) and N°5 Eau Première (but I already have Liu Eau de Parfum and you don't need both).
Haven't tried any from their exclusive line though.

I'm a bit surprised that, for N°19 Eau de Parfum, fougère is not mentioned in the chart because that is how I would describe this scent and is probably why men like to wear it as well, without it being too masculine.
I find this scent absolutely genderless.
I'm always having trouble to detect the flowers in perfumes, I don't smell rose, maybe the Lily Of The Valley for it's mild soapyness and the Iris for it's slightly powdery profile (though I don't find this a very powdery scent over all)...whatever the case, they are very well blended. But I foremost get the green in that fougère way.

This perfume feels like walking through the forest, looking up and see the sun peeking through the leaves when the fog has lifted.

Wearing it, I feel grounded yet still able to dream. I think this is the perfect scent for high sensitive people.
I also feel as though my environment expands when I wear this, asif there's more room to breath. I know that must sound weird, but I wouldn't know how to put it otherwise.

The scent is not faint or weak, but quiet and mindful. The proces from first spray to final dry down goes on almost seamlessly.
Last time I tested it before buying (using the last few drops out of the sample) was yesterday after a shower and before going to bed and I woke up to this clean skin scent with the memory of first spray.

Edit: It is a classy scent, but it somehow sometimes bores me after a few hours of wearing it.

Despite its “ice queen” reputation, I find this a comforting nature scent: an overgrown spring garden on a cool misty day. True masterpiece.

Very clean and fresh chypre fragrance with a cool and mossy dry down. Certainly one of the easier wears of the chypre genre.
